We develop general heterogeneous nonlocal diffusion models and investigate their connection to local diffusion models by taking a singular limit of focusing kernels. We reveal the link between the two groups of diffusion equations which include both spatial heterogeneity and anisotropy. In particular, we introduce the notion of deciding factors which single out a nonlocal diffusion model and typically consist of the total jump rate and the average jump length. In this framework, we also discuss the dependence of the profile of the steady state solutions on these deciding factors, thus shedding light on the preferential position of individuals.

We study a class of nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations with a harvesting term where the nonlocal operator is given by a Bernstein function of the Laplacian. In particular, it includes the fractional Laplacian, fractional relativistic operators, sum of fractional Laplacians of different order etc. We study existence, uniqueness and multiplicity results of the solutions to the steady state equation. We also consider the parabolic counterpart and establish the long time asymptotic of the solutions. Our proof techniques rely on both analytic and probabilistic arguments.
In this paper we study a nonlocal diffusion problem on a manifold. These kind of equations can model diffusions when there are long range effects and have been widely studied in Euclidean space. We first prove existence and uniqueness of solutions and a comparison principle. Then, for a convenient rescaling we prove that the operator under consideration converges to a multiple of the usual Heat-Beltrami operator on the manifold. Next, we look at the long time behavior on compact manifolds by studying the spectral properties of the operator. Finally, for the model case of hyperbolic space we study the long time asymptotics and find a different and interesting behavior.
We consider an epidemic model with nonlocal diffusion and free boundaries, which describes the evolution of an infectious agents with nonlocal diffusion and the infected humans without diffusion, where humans get infected by the agents, and infected humans in return contribute to the growth of the agents. The model can be viewed as a nonlocal version of the free boundary model studied by Ahn, Beak and Lin cite{ABL2016}, with its origin tracing back to Capasso et al. cite{CP1979, CM1981}. We prove that the problem has a unique solution defined for all $t>0$, and its long-time dynamical behaviour is governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained, which reveal significant differences from the local diffusion model in cite{ABL2016}. Depending on the choice of the kernel function in the nonlocal diffusion operator, it is expected that the nonlocal model here may have accelerated spreading, which would contrast sharply to the model of cite{ABL2016}, where the spreading has finite speed whenever spreading happens cite{ZLN2019}.
In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion system describing the corrosion of an iron based alloy in a nuclear waste repository. In comparison with the classical drift-diffusion system arising in the modeling of semiconductor devices, the originality of the corrosion model lies in the boundary conditions which are of Robin type and induce an additional coupling between the equations. We prove the existence of a weak solution by passing to the limit on a sequence of approximate solutions given by a semi-discretization in time.

Dynamical systems theory provides powerful methods to extract effective macroscopic dynamics from complex systems with slow modes and fast modes. Here we derive and theoretically support a macroscopic, spatially discrete, model for a class of stochastic reaction-diffusion partial differential equations with cubic nonlinearity. Dividing space into overlapping finite elements, a special coupling condition between neighbouring elements preserves the self-adjoint dynamics and controls interelement interactions. When the interelement coupling parameter is small, an averaging method and an asymptotic expansion of the slow modes show that the macroscopic discrete model will be a family of coupled stochastic ordinary differential equations which describe the evolution of the grid values. This modelling shows the importance of subgrid scale interaction between noise and spatial diffusion and provides a new rigourous approach to constructing semi-discrete approximations to stochastic reaction-diffusion partial differential equations.
