In this paper, we address the problem of direction finding using coprime array, which is one of the most preferred sparse array configurations. Motivated by the fact that non-uniform element spacing hinders full utilization of the underlying information in the receive signals, we propose a direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm based on low-rank reconstruction of the Toeplitz covariance matrix. The atomic-norm representation of the measurements from the interpolated virtual array is considered, and the equivalent dual-variable rank minimization problem is formulated and solved using a cyclic optimization approach. The recovered covariance matrix enables the application of conventional subspace-based spectral estimation algorithms, such as MUSIC, to achieve enhanced DoA estimation performance. The estimation performance of the proposed approach, in terms of the degrees-of-freedom and spatial resolution, is examined. We also show the superiority of the proposed method over the competitive approaches in the root-mean-square error sense.

Reducing cost and power consumption while maintaining high network access capability is a key physical-layer requirement of massive Internet of Things (mIoT) networks. Deploying a hybrid array is a cost- and energy-efficient way to meet the requirement, but would penalize system degree of freedom (DoF) and channel estimation accuracy. This is because signals from multiple antennas are combined by a radio frequency (RF) network of the hybrid array. This paper presents a novel hybrid uniform circular cylindrical array (UCyA) for mIoT networks. We design a nested hybrid beamforming structure based on sparse array techniques and propose the corresponding channel estimation method based on the second-order channel statistics. As a result, only a small number of RF chains are required to preserve the DoF of the UCyA. We also propose a new tensor-based two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm tailored for the proposed hybrid array. The algorithm suppresses the noise components in all tensor modes and operates on the signal data model directly, hence improving estimation accuracy with an affordable computational complexity. Corroborated by a Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analysis, simulation results show that the proposed hybrid UCyA array and the DoA estimation algorithm can accurately estimate the 2-D DoAs of a large number of IoT devices.
In this paper we present FRIDA---an algorithm for estimating directions of arrival of multiple wideband sound sources. FRIDA combines multi-band information coherently and achieves state-of-the-art resolution at extremely low signal-to-noise ratios. It works for arbitrary array layouts, but unlike the various steered response power and subspace methods, it does not require a grid search. FRIDA leverages recent advances in sampling signals with a finite rate of innovation. It is based on the insight that for any array layout, the entries of the spatial covariance matrix can be linearly transformed into a uniformly sampled sum of sinusoids.
In this work, we propose an alternating low-rank decomposition (ALRD) approach and novel subspace algorithms for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. In the ALRD scheme, the decomposition matrix for rank reduction is composed of a set of basis vectors. A low-rank auxiliary parameter vector is then employed to compute the output power spectrum. Alternating optimization strategies based on recursive least squares (RLS), denoted as ALRD-RLS and modified ALRD-RLS (MARLD-RLS), are devised to compute the basis vectors and the auxiliary parameter vector. Simulations for large sensor arrays with both uncorrelated and correlated sources are presented, showing that the proposed algorithms are superior to existing techniques.
Recently, several array radar structures combined with sub-Nyquist techniques and corresponding algorithms have been extensively studied. Carrier frequency and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimations of multiple narrow-band signals received by array radars at the sub-Nyquist rates are considered in this paper. We propose a new sub-Nyquist array radar architecture (a binary array radar separately connected to a multi-coset structure with M branches) and an efficient joint estimation algorithm which can match frequencies up with corresponding DOAs. We further come up with a delay pattern augmenting method, by which the capability of the number of identifiable signals can increase from M-1 to Q-1 (Q is extended degrees of freedom). We further conclude that the minimum total sampling rate 2MB is sufficient to identify $ {K leq Q-1}$ narrow-band signals of maximum bandwidth $B$ inside. The effectiveness and performance of the estimation algorithm together with the augmenting method have been verified by simulations.
The near-field effect of short-range multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems imposes many challenges on direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation. Most conventional scenarios assume that the far-field planar wavefronts hold. In this paper, we investigate the DoA estimation problem in short-range MIMO communications, where the effect of near-field spherical wave is non-negligible. By converting it into a regression task, a novel DoA estimation framework based on complex-valued deep learning (CVDL) is proposed for the near-field region in short-range MIMO communication systems. Under the assumption of a spherical wave model, the array steering vector is determined by both the distance and the direction. However, solving this regression task containing a massive number of variables is challenging, since datasets need to capture numerous complicated feature representations. To overcome this, a virtual covariance matrix (VCM) based on received signals is constructed, and thus such features extracted from the VCM can deal with the complicated coupling relationship between the direction and the distance. Although the emergence of wireless big data driven by future communication networks promotes deep learning-based wireless signal processing, the learning algorithms of complex-valued signals are still ongoing. This paper proposes a one-dimensional (1-D) residual network that can directly tackle complex-valued features due to the inherent 1-D structure of signal subspace vectors. In addition, we put forth a cropped VCM based policy which can be applied to different antenna sizes. The proposed method is able to fully exploit the complex-valued information. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed CVDL approach over the baseline schemes in terms of the accuracy of DoA estimation.
