Bound-systems of $Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{rm N}$ are studied via $Xi^-$ capture at rest followed by emission of a twin single-$Lambda$ hypernucleus in the emulsion detectors. Two events forming extremely deep $Xi^-$ bound states were obtained by analysis of a hybrid method in the E07 experiment at J-PARC and reanalysis of the E373 experiment at KEK-PS. The decay mode of one event was assigned as $Xi^-+^{14}_{}{rm N}to^{5}_{Lambda}{rm He}$+$^{5}_{Lambda}{rm He}$+$^{4}_{}{rm He}$+n. Since there are no excited states for daughter particles, the binding energy of the $Xi^-$ hyperon, $B_{Xi^-}$, in $^{14}_{}{rm N}$ nucleus was uniquely determined to be 6.27 $pm$ 0.27 MeV. Another $Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{rm N}$ system via the decay $^{9}_{Lambda}{rm Be}$ + $^{5}_{Lambda}{rm He}$ + n brings a $B_{Xi^-}$ value, 8.00 $pm$ 0.77 MeV or 4.96 $pm$ 0.77 MeV, where the two possible values of $B_{Xi^-}$ correspond to the ground and the excited states of the daughter $^{9}_{Lambda}{rm Be}$ nucleus, respectively. Because the $B_{Xi^-}$ values are larger than those of the previously reported events (KISO and IBUKI), which are both interpreted as the nuclear $1p$ state of the $Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{rm N}$ system, these new events give the first indication of the nuclear $1s$ state of the $Xi$ hypernucleus, $^{15}_{Xi}{rm C}$.
In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$ rightarrow ^{10}_Lambda$Be + $^5_Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${Xi}N$-$LambdaLambda$ coupling.
We report the first observation of the doubly-strange baryon $Xi(1620)^0$ in its decay to $Xi^-pi^+$ via $Xi_c^+ rightarrow Xi^- pi^+ pi^+$ decays based on a $980,{rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The mass and width are measured to be 1610.4 $pm$ 6.0 (stat) $^{+5.9}_{-3.5}$ (syst)~MeV$/c^2$ and 59.9 $pm$ 4.8 (stat) $^{+2.8}_{-3.0}$ (syst)~MeV, respectively. We obtain 4.0$sigma$ evidence of the $Xi(1690)^0$ with the same data sample. These results shed light on the structure of hyperon resonances with strangeness $S=-2$.
Using a data sample of $2.25times10^{8}$ $J/psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays of $eta_{c}$ mesons to $Sigma^{+}bar{Sigma}^{-}$ and $Xi^{-}bar{Xi}^{+}$. The branching fractions are measured to be $(2.11pm0.28_{rm stat.}pm0.18_{rm syst.}pm0.50_{rm PDG})times10^{-3}$ and $(0.89pm0.16_{rm stat.}pm0.08_{rm syst.}pm0.21_{rm PDG})times10^{-3}$ for $eta_{c} to Sigma^{+}bar{Sigma}^{-}$ and $Xi^{-}bar{Xi}^{+}$, respectively. These branching fractions provide important information on the helicity selection rule in charmonium-decay processes.
Despite decades of studies of the photoproduction of hyperons, both their production mechanisms and their spectra of excited states are still largely unknown. While the parity-violating weak decay of hyperons offers a means of measuring their polarization, which could help discern their production mechanisms and identify their excitation spectra, no such study has been possible for doubly strange baryons in photoproduction, due to low production cross sections. However, by making use of the reaction $gamma p to K^+ K^+ Xi^-$, we have measured, for the first time, the induced polarization, $P$, and the transferred polarization from circularly polarized real photons, characterized by $C_x$ and $C_z$, to recoiling $Xi^-$s. The data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for photon energies from just over threshold (2.4 GeV) to 5.45 GeV. These first-time measurements are compared, and are shown to broadly agree, with model predictions in which cascade photoproduction proceeds through the decay of intermediate hyperon resonances that are produced via relativistic meson exchange, offering a new step forward in the understanding of the production and polarization of doubly-strange baryons.
The E885 collaboration utilized the 1.8 GeV/c K^- beam line at the AGS to accumulate 3 x 10^5 (K^-,K^+) events. Xi hypernuclear states are expected to be produced through the reaction K^- + ^{12}C -> K^+ + ^{12}_{Xi}Be. The measured missing-mass spectrum indicates the existence of a signal below the threshold for free Xi production. Although the resolution was not sufficient to resolve discrete hypernuclear states, the excess of events in the region of missing mass, kinematically inaccessible in free Xi production, is compared to theoretical prediction for ^{12}_{Xi}Be production.
