Within a robot autonomy stack, the planner and controller are typically designed separately, and serve different purposes. As such, there is often a diffusion of responsibilities when it comes to ensuring safety for the robot. We propose that a planner and controller should share the same interpretation of safety but apply this knowledge in a different yet complementary way. To achieve this, we use Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability theory at the planning level to provide the robot planner with the foresight to avoid entering regions with possible inevitable collision. However, this alone does not guarantee safety. In conjunction with this HJ reachability-infused planner, we propose a minimally-interventional multi-agent safety-preserving controller also derived via HJ-reachability theory. The safety controller maintains safety for the robot without unduly impacting planner performance. We demonstrate the benefits of our proposed approach in a multi-agent highway scenario where a robot car is rewarded to navigate through traffic as fast as possible, and we show that our approach provides strong safety assurances yet achieves the highest performance compared to other safety controllers.
Action anticipation, intent prediction, and proactive behavior are all desirable characteristics for autonomous driving policies in interactive scenarios. Paramount, however, is ensuring safety on the road -- a key challenge in doing so is accounting for uncertainty in human driver actions without unduly impacting planner performance. This paper introduces a minimally-interventional safety controller operating within an autonomous vehicle control stack with the role of ensuring collision-free interaction with an externally controlled (e.g., human-driven) counterpart while respecting static obstacles such as a road boundary wall. We leverage reachability analysis to construct a real-time (100Hz) controller that serves the dual role of (i) tracking an input trajectory from a higher-level planning algorithm using model predictive control, and (ii) assuring safety by maintaining the availability of a collision-free escape maneuver as a persistent constraint regardless of whatever future actions the other car takes. A full-scale steer-by-wire platform is used to conduct traffic weaving experiments wherein two cars, initially side-by-side, must swap lanes in a limited amount of time and distance, emulating cars merging onto/off of a highway. We demonstrate that, with our control stack, the autonomous vehicle is able to avoid collision even when the other car defies the planners expectations and takes dangerous actions, either carelessly or with the intent to collide, and otherwise deviates minimally from the planned trajectory to the extent required to maintain safety.
Leak detection and water quality monitoring are requirements and challenging tasks in Water Distribution Systems (WDS). In-line robots are designed for this aim. In our previous work, we designed an in-pipe robot [1]. In this research, we present the design of the central processor, characterize and control the robot based on the condition of operation in a highly pressurized environment of pipelines with the presence of high-speed flow. To this aim, an extreme operation condition is simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the spring mechanism is characterized to ensure sufficient stabilizing force during operation based on the extreme operating condition. Also, an end-to-end method is suggested for power considerations for our robot that calculates minimum battery capacity and operation duration in the extreme operating condition. Finally, we design a novel LQR-PID based controller based on the system auxiliary matrices that retain the robot stability inside the pipeline against disturbances and uncertainties during operation. The ADAMS-MATLAB co-simulation of the robot-controller shows the rotational velocity with -4 degree/sec and +3 degree/sec margin around x, y, and z axes while the system tracks different desired velocities in pipelines (i.e. 0.12m/s, 0.17m/s, and 0.35m/s). Also, experimental results for four iterations in a 14-inch diameter PVC pipe show that the controller brings initial values of stabilizing states to zero and oscillate around it with a margin of 2 degrees and the system tracks desired velocities of 0.1m/s, 0.2m/s, 0.3m/s, and 0.35m/s in which makes the robot dexterous in uncertain and highly disturbed the environment of pipelines during operation.
This paper presents algorithms for performing data-driven reachability analysis under temporal logic side information. In certain scenarios, the data-driven reachable sets of a robot can be prohibitively conservative due to the inherent noise in the robots historical measurement data. In the same scenarios, we often have side information about the robots expected motion (e.g., limits on how much a robot can move in a one-time step) that could be useful for further specifying the reachability analysis. In this work, we show that if we can model this side information using a signal temporal logic (STL) fragment, we can constrain the data-driven reachability analysis and safely limit the conservatism of the computed reachable sets. Moreover, we provide formal guarantees that, even after incorporating side information, the computed reachable sets still properly over-approximate the robots future states. Lastly, we empirically validate the practicality of the over-approximation by computing constrained, data-driven reachable sets for the Small-Vehicles-for-Autonomy (SVEA) hardware platform in two driving scenarios.
The hierarchical quadratic programming (HQP) is commonly applied to consider strict hierarchies of multi-tasks and robots physical inequality constraints during whole-body compliance. However, for the one-step HQP, the solution can oscillate when it is close to the boundary of constraints. It is because the abrupt hit of the bounds gives rise to unrealisable jerks and even infeasible solutions. This paper proposes the mixed control, which blends the single-axis model predictive control (MPC) and proportional derivate (PD) control for the whole-body compliance to overcome these deficiencies. The MPC predicts the distances between the bounds and the control target of the critical tasks, and it provides smooth and feasible solutions by prediction and optimisation in advance. However, applying MPC will inevitably increase the computation time. Therefore, to achieve a 500 Hz servo rate, the PD controllers still regulate other tasks to save computation resources. Also, we use a more efficient null space projection (NSP) whole-body controller instead of the HQP and distribute the single-axis MPCs into four CPU cores for parallel computation. Finally, we validate the desired capabilities of the proposed strategy via Simulations and the experiment on the humanoid robot Walker X.
