Image guided depth completion is the task of generating a dense depth map from a sparse depth map and a high quality image. In this task, how to fuse the color and depth modalities plays an important role in achieving good performance. This paper proposes a two-branch backbone that consists of a color-dominant branch and a depth-dominant branch to exploit and fuse two modalities thoroughly. More specifically, one branch inputs a color image and a sparse depth map to predict a dense depth map. The other branch takes as inputs the sparse depth map and the previously predicted depth map, and outputs a dense depth map as well. The depth maps predicted from two branches are complimentary to each other and therefore they are adaptively fused. In addition, we also propose a simple geometric convolutional layer to encode 3D geometric cues. The geometric encoded backbone conducts the fusion of different modalities at multiple stages, leading to good depth completion results. We further implement a dilated and accelerated CSPN++ to refine the fused depth map efficiently. The proposed full model ranks 1st in the KITTI depth completion online leaderboard at the time of submission. It also infers much faster than most of the top ranked methods. Depth completion deals with the problem of recovering dense depth maps from sparse ones, where color images are often used to facilitate this completion. Recent approaches mainly focus on image guided learning to predict dense results. However, blurry image guidance and object structures in depth still impede the performance of image guided frameworks. To tackle these problems, we explore a repetitive design in our image guided network to sufficiently and gradually recover depth values. Specifically, the repetition is embodied in a color image guidance branch and a depth generation branch. In the former branch, we design a repetitive hourglass network to extract higher-level image features of complex environments, which can provide powerful context guidance for depth prediction. In the latter branch, we design a repetitive guidance module based on dynamic convolution where the convolution factorization is applied to simultaneously reduce its complexity and progressively model high-frequency structures, e.g., boundaries. Further, in this module, we propose an adaptive fusion mechanism to effectively aggregate multi-step depth features. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art result on the NYUv2 dataset and ranks 1st on the KITTI benchmark at the time of submission.
In this paper, we propose a new global geometry constraint for depth completion. By assuming depth maps often lay on low dimensional subspaces, a dense depth map can be approximated by a weighted sum of full-resolution principal depth bases. The principal components of depth fields can be learned from natural depth maps. The given sparse depth points are served as a data term to constrain the weighting process. When the input depth points are too sparse, the recovered dense depth maps are often over smoothed. To address this issue, we add a colour-guided auto-regression model as another regularization term. It assumes the reconstructed depth maps should share the same nonlocal similarity in the accompanying colour image. Our colour-guided PCA depth completion method has closed-form solutions, thus can be efficiently solved and is significantly more accurate than PCA only method. Extensive experiments on KITTI and Middlebury datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method.
Depth completion aims at inferring a dense depth image from sparse depth measurement since glossy, transparent or distant surface cannot be scanned properly by the sensor. Most of existing methods directly interpolate the missing depth measurements based on pixel-wise image content and the corresponding neighboring depth values. Consequently, this leads to blurred boundaries or inaccurate structure of object. To address these problems, we propose a novel self-guided instance-aware network (SG-IANet) that: (1) utilize self-guided mechanism to extract instance-level features that is needed for depth restoration, (2) exploit the geometric and context information into network learning to conform to the underlying constraints for edge clarity and structure consistency, (3) regularize the depth estimation and mitigate the impact of noise by instance-aware learning, and (4) train with synthetic data only by domain randomization to bridge the reality gap. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real world dataset demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms previous works. Further ablation studies give more insights into the proposed method and demonstrate the generalization capability of our model.
This paper focuses on semantic scene completion, a task for producing a complete 3D voxel representation of volumetric occupancy and semantic labels for a scene from a single-view depth map observation. Previous work has considered scene completion and semantic labeling of depth maps separately. However, we observe that these two problems are tightly intertwined. To leverage the coupled nature of these two tasks, we introduce the semantic scene completion network (SSCNet), an end-to-end 3D convolutional network that takes a single depth image as input and simultaneously outputs occupancy and semantic labels for all voxels in the camera view frustum. Our network uses a dilation-based 3D context module to efficiently expand the receptive field and enable 3D context learning. To train our network, we construct SUNCG - a manually created large-scale dataset of synthetic 3D scenes with dense volumetric annotations. Our experiments demonstrate that the joint model outperforms methods addressing each task in isolation and outperforms alternative approaches on the semantic scene completion task.
We propose a method to reconstruct, complete and semantically label a 3D scene from a single input depth image. We improve the accuracy of the regressed semantic 3D maps by a novel architecture based on adversarial learning. In particular, we suggest using multiple adversarial loss terms that not only enforce realistic outputs with respect to the ground truth, but also an effective embedding of the internal features. This is done by correlating the latent features of the encoder working on partial 2.5D data with the latent features extracted from a variational 3D auto-encoder trained to reconstruct the complete semantic scene. In addition, differently from other approaches that operate entirely through 3D convolutions, at test time we retain the original 2.5D structure of the input during downsampling to improve the effectiveness of the internal representation of our model. We test our approach on the main benchmark datasets for semantic scene completion to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the effectiveness of our proposal.
