We design a Hybrid High-Order (HHO) scheme for the Poisson problem that is fully robust on polytopal meshes in the presence of small edges/faces. We state general assumptions on the stabilisation terms involved in the scheme, under which optimal error estimates (in discrete and continuous energy norms, as well as $L^2$-norm) are established with multiplicative constants that do not depend on the maximum number of faces in each element, or the relative size between an element and its faces. We illustrate the error estimates through numerical simulations in 2D and 3D on meshes designed by agglomeration techniques (such meshes naturally have elements with a very large numbers of faces, and very small faces).
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are extensions of the usual Galerkin finite element methods. Although there are vast amount of studies on DG methods, most of them have assumed shape-regularity conditions on meshes for both theoretical error analysis and practical computations. In this paper, we present a new symmetric interior penalty DG scheme with a modified penalty term. We show that, without imposing the shape-regularity condition on the meshes, the new DG scheme inherits all of the good properties of standard DG methods, and is thus robust on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical error estimates obtained.
In this work, we develop a discretisation method for the mixed formulation of the magnetostatic problem supporting arbitrary orders and polyhedral meshes. The method is based on a global discrete de Rham (DDR) sequence, obtained by patching the local spaces constructed in [Di Pietro, Droniou, Rapetti, Fully discrete polynomial de Rham sequences of arbitrary degree on polygons and polyhedra, arXiv:1911.03616] by enforcing the single-valuedness of the components attached to the boundary of each element. The first main contribution of this paper is a proof of exactness relations for this global DDR sequence, obtained leveraging the exactness of the corresponding local sequence and a topological assembly of the mesh valid for domains that do not enclose any void. The second main contribution is the formulation and well-posedness analysis of the method, which includes the proof of uniform Poincare inequalities for the discrete divergence and curl operators. The convergence rate in the natural energy norm is numerically evaluated on standard and polyhedral meshes. When the DDR sequence of degree $kge 0$ is used, the error converges as $h^{k+1}$, with $h$ denoting the meshsize.
Pavarino proved that the additive Schwarz method with vertex patches and a low-order coarse space gives a $p$-robust solver for symmetric and coercive problems. However, for very high polynomial degree it is not feasible to assemble or factorize the matrices for each patch. In this work we introduce a direct solver for separable patch problems that scales to very high polynomial degree on tensor product cells. The solver constructs a tensor product basis that diagonalizes the blocks in the stiffness matrix for the internal degrees of freedom of each individual cell. As a result, the non-zero structure of the cell matrices is that of the graph connecting internal degrees of freedom to their projection onto the facets. In the new basis, the patch problem is as sparse as a low-order finite difference discretization, while having a sparser Cholesky factorization. We can thus afford to assemble and factorize the matrices for the vertex-patch problems, even for very high polynomial degree. In the non-separable case, the method can be applied as a preconditioner by approximating the problem with a separable surrogate.
In this paper, we design and analyze a Hybrid High-Order discretization method for the steady motion of non-Newtonian, incompressible fluids in the Stokes approximation of small velocities. The proposed method has several appealing features including the support of general meshes and high-order, unconditional inf-sup stability, and orders of convergence that match those obtained for Leray-Lions scalar problems. A complete well-posedness and convergence analysis of the method is carried out under new, general assumptions on the strain rate-shear stress law, which encompass several common examples such as the power-law and Carreau-Yasuda models. Numerical examples complete the exposition.
In this work, we introduce a novel algorithm for the Biot problem based on a Hybrid High-Order discretization of the mechanics and a Symmetric Weighted Interior Penalty discretization of the flow. The method has several assets, including, in particular, the support of general polyhedral meshes and arbitrary space approximation order. Our analysis delivers stability and error estimates that hold also when the specific storage coefficient vanishes, and shows that the constants have only a mild dependence on the heterogeneity of the permeability coefficient. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the method are provided.
