Non-parallel text style transfer has attracted increasing research interests in recent years. Despite successes in transferring the style based on the encoder-decoder framework, current approaches still lack the ability to preserve the content and even logic of original sentences, mainly due to the large unconstrained model space or too simplified assumptions on latent embedding space. Since language itself is an intelligent product of humans with certain grammars and has a limited rule-based model space by its nature, relieving this problem requires reconciling the model capacity of deep neural networks with the intrinsic model constraints from human linguistic rules. To this end, we propose a method called Graph Transformer based Auto Encoder (GTAE), which models a sentence as a linguistic graph and performs feature extraction and style transfer at the graph level, to maximally retain the content and the linguistic structure of original sentences. Quantitative experiment results on three non-parallel text style transfer tasks show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in content preservation, while achieving comparable performance on transfer accuracy and sentence naturalness.

Chinese short text matching is a fundamental task in natural language processing. Existing approaches usually take Chinese characters or words as input tokens. They have two limitations: 1) Some Chinese words are polysemous, and semantic information is not fully utilized. 2) Some models suffer potential issues caused by word segmentation. Here we introduce HowNet as an external knowledge base and propose a Linguistic knowledge Enhanced graph Transformer (LET) to deal with word ambiguity. Additionally, we adopt the word lattice graph as input to maintain multi-granularity information. Our model is also complementary to pre-trained language models. Experimental results on two Chinese datasets show that our models outperform various typical text matching approaches. Ablation study also indicates that both semantic information and multi-granularity information are important for text matching modeling.
One of the most challenging topics in Natural Language Processing (NLP) is visually-grounded language understanding and reasoning. Outdoor vision-and-language navigation (VLN) is such a task where an agent follows natural language instructions and navigates a real-life urban environment. Due to the lack of human-annotated instructions that illustrate intricate urban scenes, outdoor VLN remains a challenging task to solve. This paper introduces a Multimodal Text Style Transfer (MTST) learning approach and leverages external multimodal resources to mitigate data scarcity in outdoor navigation tasks. We first enrich the navigation data by transferring the style of the instructions generated by Google Maps API, then pre-train the navigator with the augmented external outdoor navigation dataset. Experimental results show that our MTST learning approach is model-agnostic, and our MTST approach significantly outperforms the baseline models on the outdoor VLN task, improving task completion rate by 8.7% relatively on the test set.

Text style transfer aims to change the style of sentences while preserving the semantic meanings. Due to the lack of parallel data, the Denoising Auto-Encoder (DAE) is widely used in this task to model distributions of different sentence styles. However, because of the conflict between the target of the conventional denoising procedure and the target of style transfer task, the vanilla DAE can not produce satisfying enough results. To improve the transferability of the model, most of the existing works combine DAE with various complicated unsupervised networks, which makes the whole system become over-complex. In this work, we design a novel DAE model named Style-Enhanced DAE (SE-DAE), which is specifically designed for the text style transfer task. Compared with previous complicated style-transfer models, our model do not consist of any complicated unsupervised networks, but only relies on the high-quality pseudo-parallel data generated by a novel data refinement mechanism. Moreover, to alleviate the conflict between the targets of the conventional denoising procedure and the style transfer task, we propose another novel style denoising mechanism, which is more compatible with the target of the style transfer task. We validate the effectiveness of our model on two style benchmark datasets. Both automatic evaluation and human evaluation show that our proposed model is highly competitive compared with previous strong the state of the art (SOTA) approaches and greatly outperforms the vanilla DAE.
Style transfer deals with the algorithms to transfer the stylistic properties of a piece of text into that of another while ensuring that the core content is preserved. There has been a lot of interest in the field of text style transfer due to its wide application to tailored text generation. Existing works evaluate the style transfer models based on content preservation and transfer strength. In this work, we propose a reinforcement learning based framework that directly rewards the framework on these target metrics yielding a better transfer of the target style. We show the improved performance of our proposed framework based on automatic and human evaluation on three independent tasks: wherein we transfer the style of text from formal to informal, high excitement to low excitement, modern English to Shakespearean English, and vice-versa in all the three cases. Improved performance of the proposed framework over existing state-of-the-art frameworks indicates the viability of the approach.

Text style transfer (TST) is an important task in natural language generation (NLG), which aims to control certain attributes in the generated text, such as politeness, emotion, humor, and many others. It has a long history in the field of natural language processing (NLP), and recently has re-gained significant attention thanks to the promising performance brought by deep neural models. In this paper, we present a systematic survey of the research on neural text style transfer, spanning over 100 representative articles since the first neural text style transfer work in 2017. We discuss the task formulation, existing datasets and subtasks, evaluation, as well as the rich methodologies in the presence of parallel and non-parallel data. We also provide discussions on a variety of important topics regarding the future development of TST. Our curated paper list is at https://github.com/zhijing-jin/Text_Style_Transfer_Survey
