Crystallization has long been the subject of research as one of the basic ways in which solid materials are constructed. In particular, the nucleation stage has not been isolated, thus has been predicted through many calculations and achieved theoretical completion through the nucleation rate(J). Si nce most of these results were obtained through isotropic building blocks in three-dimensional space, it was difficult to interpret nuclei formed by anisotropic building block in 2D or 1D structure. Recently, a lot of studies related to amyloid fibril have shown nucleation of anisotropic building block. However, due to the complexity of the amyloid fibrils, there is no unified explanation of the thermodynamic method of classical nucleation theory which is the energy loss from surface and energy gain from volume. We have experimentally demonstrated the isolation of nuclei of the orthorhombic phase of HYLION-12 which is a Dirac metamaterial and provide the effect of anisotropy of the molecules on nucleation The thermal behavior of nuclei of Dirac metamaterial through DSC has demonstrated that it can be crystallized to a Dirac metamaterial through the first order phase transition. The growth process is verified at low temperature where no phase transition occurs. The calculation of surface and bulk energy of the Dirac metamaterial was conducted. It could explain the isolation of nuclei of the Dirac metamaterial by enlarging the thermodynamic classical nucleation theory.

Aiming at the promising superlensing for the medical ultrasonic and detection, the double-negative metamaterials which possess the negative mass density and elastic modulus simultaneously can be acted as the ideal superlens for breaking the diffraction limit. In this paper, we use topology optimization to design the two-dimensional single-phase anisotropic elastic metamaterials with broadband double-negative indices and numerically demonstrate the superlensing at the deep-subwavelength scale. We also discuss the impact of several parameters adopted in the objective function and constraints on the optimized results. Unlike all previous reported mechanisms, our optimized structures exhibit the new quadrupolar or multipolar resonances for the negative mass density, negative longitudinal and shear moduli. In addition, we observe the negative refraction of transverse waves in a single-phase material. Most structures can serve as the anisotropic zero-index metamaterials for the longitudinal or transverse wave at a certain frequency. The cloaking effect is demonstrated for both the longitudinal and transverse waves. Moreover, with the particular constraints in optimization, we design a super-anisotropic metamaterial exhibiting the double-negative and hyperbolic dispersions along two principal directions, respectively. Our optimization work provides a robust computational approach to negative index engineering in elastic metamaterials and guides design of other kinds of metamaterials, including the electromagnetic and acoustic metamaterials. The unusual properties of our optimized structures are likely to inspire new ideas and novel applications including the low-frequency vibration attenuation, flat lens and ultrasonography for elastic waves in the future.

One-time memories (OTMs) are simple tamper-resistant cryptographic devices, which can be used to implement one-time programs, a very general form of software protection and program obfuscation. Here we investigate the possibility of building OTMs using quantum mechanical devices. It is known that OTMs cannot exist in a fully-quantum world or in a fully-classical world. Instead, we propose a new model based on isolated qubits -- qubits that can only be accessed using local operations and classical communication (LOCC). This model combines a quantum resource (single-qubit measurements) with a classical restriction (on communication between qubits), and can be implemented using current technologies, such as nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond. In this model, we construct OTMs that are information-theoretically secure against one-pass LOCC adversaries that use 2-outcome measurements. Our construction resembles Wiesners old idea of quantum conjugate coding, implemented using random error-correcting codes; our proof of security uses entropy chaining to bound the supremum of a suitable empirical process. In addition, we conjecture that our random codes can be replaced by some class of efficiently-decodable codes, to get computationally-efficient OTMs that are secure against computationally-bounded LOCC adversaries. In addition, we construct data-hiding states, which allow an LOCC sender to encode an (n-O(1))-bit messsage into n qubits, such that at most half of the message can be extracted by a one-pass LOCC receiver, but the whole message can be extracted by a general quantum receiver.
In this work, we demonstrate a self-standing bulk three-dimensional metamaterial based on the network of silver nanowires in an alumina membrane. This constitutes an anisotropic effective medium with hyperbolic dispersion, which can be used in sub-diffraction imaging or optical cloaks. Highly anisotropic dielectric constants of the material range from positive to negative, and the transmitted laser beam shifts both toward the normal to the surface, as in regular dielectrics, and off the normal, as in anisotropic dielectrics with the refraction index smaller than one. The designed photonic metamaterial is the thickest reported in the literature, both in terms of its physical size 1cm x 1cm x 51 mm, and the number of vacuum wavelengths, N=61 at l=0.84 mm.
The possibility of the $^{14}$C cluster being a basic building block of medium mass nuclei is discussed. Although $alpha$ cluster structures have been widely discussed in the light $Napprox Z$ mass region, the neutron to proton ratio deviates from unity in the nuclei near $beta$-stability line and in neutron-rich nuclei. Thus, more neutron-rich objects with $N>Z$ could become the building blocks of cluster structures in such nuclei. The $^{14}$C nucleus is strongly bound and can be regarded as such a candidate. In addition, the path to the lowest shell-model configuration at short relative distances is closed for the $^{14}$C+$^{14}$C structure contrary to the case of the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C structure; this allows to keep appreciable separation distance between the $^{14}$C clusters. The recent development of antisymmetrized quasi-cluster model (AQCM) allows us to utilize $jj$-coupling shell model wave function for each cluster in a simplified way. The AQCM results for the $^{14}$C+$^{14}$C structure in $^{28}$Mg are compared with the ones of cranked relativistic mean field (CRMF) calculations. Although theoretical frameworks of these two models are quite different, they give similar results for the nucleonic densities and rotational properties of the structure under investigation. The existence of linear chain three $^{14}$C cluster structure in $^{42}$Ar has also been predicted in AQCM. These results confirm the role of the $^{14}$C cluster as a possible building block of cluster structures in medium mass nuclei.

Skepticism of the building block hypothesis (BBH) has previously been expressed on account of the weak theoretical foundations of this hypothesis and the anomalies in the empirical record of the simple genetic algorithm. In this paper we hone in on a more fundamental cause for skepticism--the extraordinary strength of some of the assumptions that undergird the BBH. Specifically, we focus on assumptions made about the distribution of fitness over the genome set, and argue that these assumptions are unacceptably strong. As most of these assumptions have been embraced by the designers of so-called competent genetic algorithms, our critique is relevant to an appraisal of such algorithms as well.
