Despite Temporal Sentence Grounding in Videos (TSGV) has realized impressive progress over the last few years, current TSGV models tend to capture the moment annotation biases and fail to take full advantage of multi-modal inputs. Miraculously, some extremely simple TSGV baselines even without training can also achieve state-of-the-art performance. In this paper, we first take a closer look at the existing evaluation protocol, and argue that both the prevailing datasets and metrics are the devils to cause the unreliable benchmarking. To this end, we propose to re-organize two widely-used TSGV datasets (Charades-STA and ActivityNet Captions), and deliberately textbf{C}hange the moment annotation textbf{D}istribution of the test split to make it different from the training split, dubbed as Charades-CD and ActivityNet-CD, respectively. Meanwhile, we further introduce a new evaluation metric dR@$n$,IoU@$m$ to calibrate the basic IoU scores by penalizing more on the over-long moment predictions and reduce the inflating performance caused by the moment annotation biases. Under this new evaluation protocol, we conduct extensive experiments and ablation studies on eight state-of-the-art TSGV models. All the results demonstrate that the re-organized datasets and new metric can better monitor the progress in TSGV, which is still far from satisfactory. In this paper, we study the problem of weakly-supervised temporal grounding of sentence in video. Specifically, given an untrimmed video and a query sentence, our goal is to localize a temporal segment in the video that semantically corresponds to the query sentence, with no reliance on any temporal annotation during training. We propose a two-stage model to tackle this problem in a coarse-to-fine manner. In the coarse stage, we first generate a set of fixed-length temporal proposals using multi-scale sliding windows, and match their visual features against the sentence features to identify the best-matched proposal as a coarse grounding result. In the fine stage, we perform a fine-grained matching between the visual features of the frames in the best-matched proposal and the sentence features to locate the precise frame boundary of the fine grounding result. Comprehensive experiments on the ActivityNet Captions dataset and the Charades-STA dataset demonstrate that our two-stage model achieves compelling performance.
Temporal sentence grounding in videos~(TSGV), which aims to localize one target segment from an untrimmed video with respect to a given sentence query, has drawn increasing attentions in the research community over the past few years. Different from the task of temporal action localization, TSGV is more flexible since it can locate complicated activities via natural languages, without restrictions from predefined action categories. Meanwhile, TSGV is more challenging since it requires both textual and visual understanding for semantic alignment between two modalities~(i.e., text and video). In this survey, we give a comprehensive overview for TSGV, which i) summarizes the taxonomy of existing methods, ii) provides a detailed description of the evaluation protocols~(i.e., datasets and metrics) to be used in TSGV, and iii) in-depth discusses potential problems of current benchmarking designs and research directions for further investigations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic survey on temporal sentence grounding. More specifically, we first discuss existing TSGV approaches by grouping them into four categories, i.e., two-stage methods, end-to-end methods, reinforcement learning-based methods, and weakly supervised methods. Then we present the benchmark datasets and evaluation metrics to assess current research progress. Finally, we discuss some limitations in TSGV through pointing out potential problems improperly resolved in the current evaluation protocols, which may push forwards more cutting edge research in TSGV. Besides, we also share our insights on several promising directions, including three typical tasks with new and practical settings based on TSGV.
Temporal sentence grounding in videos aims to detect and localize one target video segment, which semantically corresponds to a given sentence. Existing methods mainly tackle this task via matching and aligning semantics between a sentence and candidate video segments, while neglect the fact that the sentence information plays an important role in temporally correlating and composing the described contents in videos. In this paper, we propose a novel semantic conditioned dynamic modulation (SCDM) mechanism, which relies on the sentence semantics to modulate the temporal convolution operations for better correlating and composing the sentence related video contents over time. More importantly, the proposed SCDM performs dynamically with respect to the diverse video contents so as to establish a more precise matching relationship between sentence and video, thereby improving the temporal grounding accuracy. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-arts with clear margins, illustrating the ability of SCDM to better associate and localize relevant video contents for temporal sentence grounding. In this paper, we explore a novel task named visual Relation Grounding in Videos (vRGV). The task aims at spatio-temporally localizing the given relations in the form of subject-predicate-object in the videos, so as to provide supportive visual facts for other high-level video-language tasks (e.g., video-language grounding and video question answering). The challenges in this task include but not limited to: (1) both the subject and object are required to be spatio-temporally localized to ground a query relation; (2) the temporal dynamic nature of visual relations in videos is difficult to capture; and (3) the grounding should be achieved without any direct supervision in space and time. To ground the relations, we tackle the challenges by collaboratively optimizing two sequences of regions over a constructed hierarchical spatio-temporal region graph through relation attending and reconstruction, in which we further propose a message passing mechanism by spatial attention shifting between visual entities. Experimental results demonstrate that our model can not only outperform baseline approaches significantly, but also produces visually meaningful facts to support visual grounding. Temporal grounding of natural language in untrimmed videos is a fundamental yet challenging multimedia task facilitating cross-media visual content retrieval. We focus on the weakly supervised setting of this task that merely accesses to coarse video-level language description annotation without temporal boundary, which is more consistent with reality as such weak labels are more readily available in practice. In this paper, we propose a emph{Boundary Adaptive Refinement} (BAR) framework that resorts to reinforcement learning (RL) to guide the process of progressively refining the temporal boundary. To the best of our knowledge, we offer the first attempt to extend RL to temporal localization task with weak supervision. As it is non-trivial to obtain a straightforward reward function in the absence of pairwise granular boundary-query annotations, a cross-modal alignment evaluator is crafted to measure the alignment degree of segment-query pair to provide tailor-designed rewards. This refinement scheme completely abandons traditional sliding window based solution pattern and contributes to acquiring more efficient, boundary-flexible and content-aware grounding results. Extensive experiments on two public benchmarks Charades-STA and ActivityNet demonstrate that BAR outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly-supervised method and even beats some competitive fully-supervised ones.
