Recent technological advances allowed the coherent optical manipulation of high-energy electron wavepackets with attosecond precision. Here we theoretically investigate the collision of optically-modulated pulsed electron beams with atomic targets and reveal a quantum interference associated with different momentum components of the incident broadband electron pulse, which coherently modulates both the elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections. We show that the quantum interference has a high spatial sensitivity at the level of Angstroms, offering potential applications in high-resolution ultrafast electron microscopy. Our findings are rationalized by a simple model.

Light propagating in an optically thick sample experiences multiple scattering. It is now known that interferences alter this propagation, leading to an enhanced backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization of light in such diffuse samples. This phenomenon has been extensively studied with classical scatterers. In this letter we report the first experimental evidence for coherent backscattering of light in a laser-cooled gas of Rubidium atoms.

We have used the convergent close-coupling method and a unitarized first-order many-body theory to calculate integral cross sections for elastic scattering and momentum transfer, for excitation of the 5d^2 ^1S, 6s6p^1P_1, 6s7p^1P_1, 6s8p^1P_1, 6s5d^1D_2, 5d^2^1D_2, 6s6d^1D_2, 6p5d^1F_3, 6s4f^1F_3, 6p5d^1D_2, 6s6p^3P_{0,1,2}, 6s5d^3D_{1,2,3}, and 6p5d^3D_2 states, for ionization and for total scattering by electron impact on the ground state of barium at incident electron energies from 1 to 1000 eV. These results and all available experimental data have been combined to produce a recommended set of integral cross sections.

We have studied the interplay between disorder and cooperative scattering for single scattering limit in the presence of a driving laser. Analytical results have been derived and we have observed cooperative scattering effects in a variety of experiments, ranging from thermal atoms in an optical dipole trap, atoms released from a dark MOT and atoms in a BEC, consistent with our theoretical predictions.

Isolating neutral and charged particles from the environment is essential in precision experiments. For decades, this has been achieved by trapping ions with radio-frequency (rf) fields and neutral particles with optical fields. Recently, trapping of ions by interaction with light has been demonstrated. This might permit combining the advantages of optical trapping and ions. For example, by superimposing optical traps to investigate ensembles of ions and atoms in absence of any radiofrequency fields, as well as to benefit from the versatile and scalable trapping geometries featured by optical lattices. In particular, ions provide individual addressability, electronic and motional degrees of freedom that can be coherently controlled and detected via high fidelity, state-dependent operations. Their long-range Coulomb interaction is significantly larger compared to those of neutral atoms and molecules. This qualifies to study ultra-cold interaction and chemistry of trapped ions and atoms, as well as to provide a novel platform for higher-dimensional experimental quantum simulations. The aim of this topical review is to present the current state of the art and to discuss current challenges and the prospects of the emerging field.
We explore various models for the pattern forming instability in a laser-driven cloud of cold two-level atoms with a plane feedback mirror. Focus is on the combined treatment of nonlinear propagation in a diffractively thick medium and the boundary condition given by feedback. The combined presence of purely transverse transmission gratings and reflection gratings on wavelength scale is addressed. Different truncation levels of the Fourier expansion of the dielectric susceptibility in terms of these gratings are discussed and compared to literature. A formalism to calculate the exact solution for the homogenous state in presence of absorption is presented. The relationship between the counterpropagating beam instability and the feedback instability is discussed. Feedback reduces the threshold by a factor of two under optimal conditions. Envelope curves which bound all possible threshold curves for varying mirror distances are calculated. The results are comparing well to experimental results regarding the observed length scales and threshold conditions. It is clarified where the assumption of a diffractively thin medium is justified.
