In the framework of the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black hole. Our result shows that no violations of WCCC can occur with the increase of the background solution parameters for this near-extremal EMDA black hole when the second order correction of the perturbations is taken into account. Namely, the near-extremal EMDA black hole cannot be over-charged or over-spun.

We consider gedanken experiments to destroy an extremal or near-extremal BTZ black hole by throwing matter into the horizon. These black holes are vacuum solutions to (2+1)-dimensional gravity theories, and are asymptotically $mathrm{AdS}_3$. Provided the null energy condition for the falling matter, we prove the following---(i) in a Mielke-Baekler model without ghost fields, when torsion is present, an extremal BTZ black hole can be overspun and becomes a naked conical singularity; (ii) in 3-dimensional Einstein gravity and chiral gravity, which both live in torsionless limits of Mielke-Baekler model, an extremal BTZ black hole cannot be overspun; and (iii) in both Einstein gravity and chiral gravity, a near-extremal BTZ black hole cannot be overspun, leaving the weak cosmic censorship preserved. To obtain these results, we follow the analysis of Sorce and Wald on their gedanken experiments to destroy a Kerr-Newman black hole, and calculate the second order corrections to the black hole mass. Furthermore, Walds type of gedanken experiment provides an operational procedure of proving the third law of black hole mechanics. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, our results on BTZ black holes also indicate that a third law of thermodynamics holds for the holographic conformal field theories dual to 3-dimensional Einstein gravity and chiral gravity.

Based on the new version of the gedanken experiment proposed by Sorce and Wald, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for a Reissner-Nordstr{o}m-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole under the perturbation of extra matter fields. Firstly, we propose that the cosmological constant can be effectively derived from the matter fields and its value varies with the matter fields perturbing the black hole. Meanwhile, we assume that the perturbation satisfies the stability condition. This condition means that after a long time of the perturbation, the black hole solution also belongs to the family of the RN-AdS solution. After that, based on both the stability condition and the null energy condition, while using the off-shell variation method, the first-order and the second-order perturbation inequalities are derived respectively when the cosmological constant is considered as a dynamic variable. It is the first time to extend the two perturbation inequalities to contain the term of the press and volume of thermodynamics. Finally, we perform the two perturbation inequalities into testing the WCCC for the RN-AdS black hole under the second-order approximation of the perturbation. It is shown that if the variation of the cosmological constant is caused by the matter fields, while the stability condition and the null energy condition are all satisfied, the black hole cannot be destroyed after the perturbation. In other words, the WCCC for the RN-AdS black hole is valid under the second-order approximation of the perturbation.

The weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the near-extremal BTZ black hole has been tested by the test particles and fields. It was claimed that this black hole could be overspun. In this paper, we review the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in BTZ black holes by the scattering of the scalar field. The first law of thermodynamics in the non-extremal BTZ black hole is recovered. For the extremal and near-extremal black holes, due to the divergence of the variation of the entropy, we test the weak cosmic censorship conjecture by evaluating the minimum values of the function $f$. Both of the extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overspun.

Sorce and Wald proposed a new version of gedanken experiments to examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in Kerr-Newmann black holes. However, their discussion only includes the second-order approximation of perturbation and there exists an optimal condition such that the validity of the WCCC is determined by the higher-order approximations. Therefore, in this paper, we extended their discussions into the high-order approximations to study the WCCC in a nearly extremal Kerr black hole. After assuming that the spacetime satisfies the stability condition and the perturbation matter fields satisfy the null energy condition, based on the Noether charge method by Iyer and Wald, we completely calculate the first four order perturbation inequalities and discuss the corresponding gedanken experiment to overspin the Kerr black hole. As a result, we find that the nearly extremal Kerr black holes cannot be destroyed under the fourth-order approximation of perturbation. Then, by using the mathematical induction, we strictly prove the $n$th order perturbation inequality when the first $(n-1)$ order perturbation inequalities are saturated. Using these results, we discuss the first $100$ order approximation of the gedanken experiments and find that the WCCC in Kerr black hole is valid under the higher-order approximation of perturbation. Our investigation implies that the WCCC might be strictly satisfied in Kerr black holes under the perturbation level.
Treating the cosmological constant as a dynamical variable, we investigate the thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of a charged AdS black hole (BH) in the Rastall gravity. We determine the energy momentum relation of charged fermion at the horizon of the BH by using the Dirac equation. Based on this relation, we show that the first law of thermodynamics (FLT) still holds as a fermion is absorbed by the BH. However, the entropy of both the extremal and near-extremal BH decreases in the irreversible process, which means that the second law of thermodynamics (SLT) is violated. Furthermore, we verify the validity of the WCCC by the minimum values of the metric function h(r) at its final state. For the extremal charged AdS BH in the Rastall gravity, we find that the WCCC is valid always since the BH is extreme. While for the case of near-extremal BH, we find the WCCC could be violable in the extended phase space (EPS), depending on the value of the parameters of the BH and their variations.
