Three-dimensional imaging plays an important role in imaging applications where it is necessary to record depth. The number of applications that use depth imaging is increasing rapidly, and examples include self-driving autonomous vehicles and auto-focus assist on smartphone cameras. Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) via single-photon sensitive detector (SPAD) arrays is an emerging technology that enables the acquisition of depth images at high frame rates. However, the spatial resolution of this technology is typically low in comparison to the intensity images recorded by conventional cameras. To increase the native resolution of depth images from a SPAD camera, we develop a deep network built specifically to take advantage of the multiple features that can be extracted from a cameras histogram data. The network is designed for a SPAD camera operating in a dual-mode such that it captures alternate low resolution depth and high resolution intensity images at high frame rates, thus the system does not require any additional sensor to provide intensity images. The network then uses the intensity images and multiple features extracted from downsampled histograms to guide the upsampling of the depth. Our network provides significant image resolution enhancement and image denoising across a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios and photon levels. We apply the network to a range of 3D data, demonstrating denoising and a four-fold resolution enhancement of depth.

Recently, the single image super-resolution (SISR) approaches with deep and complex convolutional neural network structures have achieved promising performance. However, those methods improve the performance at the cost of higher memory consumption, which is difficult to be applied for some mobile devices with limited storage and computing resources. To solve this problem, we present a lightweight multi-scale feature interaction network (MSFIN). For lightweight SISR, MSFIN expands the receptive field and adequately exploits the informative features of the low-resolution observed images from various scales and interactive connections. In addition, we design a lightweight recurrent residual channel attention block (RRCAB) so that the network can benefit from the channel attention mechanism while being sufficiently lightweight. Extensive experiments on some benchmarks have confirmed that our proposed MSFIN can achieve comparable performance against the state-of-the-arts with a more lightweight model.
We propose a deep reparametrization of the maximum a posteriori formulation commonly employed in multi-frame image restoration tasks. Our approach is derived by introducing a learned error metric and a latent representation of the target image, which transforms the MAP objective to a deep feature space. The deep reparametrization allows us to directly model the image formation process in the latent space, and to integrate learned image priors into the prediction. Our approach thereby leverages the advantages of deep learning, while also benefiting from the principled multi-frame fusion provided by the classical MAP formulation. We validate our approach through comprehensive experiments on burst denoising and burst super-resolution datasets. Our approach sets a new state-of-the-art for both tasks, demonstrating the generality and effectiveness of the proposed formulation.
Environment perception for autonomous driving is doomed by the trade-off between range-accuracy and resolution: current sensors that deliver very precise depth information are usually restricted to low resolution because of technology or cost limitations. In this work, we exploit depth information from an active gated imaging system based on cost-sensitive diode and CMOS technology. Learning a mapping between pixel intensities of three gated slices and depth produces a super-resolved depth map image with respectable relative accuracy of 5% in between 25-80 m. By design, depth information is perfectly aligned with pixel intensity values.
Hyperspectral images are of crucial importance in order to better understand features of different materials. To reach this goal, they leverage on a high number of spectral bands. However, this interesting characteristic is often paid by a reduced spatial resolution compared with traditional multispectral image systems. In order to alleviate this issue, in this work, we propose a simple and efficient architecture for deep convolutional neural networks to fuse a low-resolution hyperspectral image (LR-HSI) and a high-resolution multispectral image (HR-MSI), yielding a high-resolution hyperspectral image (HR-HSI). The network is designed to preserve both spatial and spectral information thanks to an architecture from two folds: one is to utilize the HR-HSI at a different scale to get an output with a satisfied spectral preservation; another one is to apply concepts of multi-resolution analysis to extract high-frequency information, aiming to output high quality spatial details. Finally, a plain mean squared error loss function is used to measure the performance during the training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed network architecture achieves best performance (both qualitatively and quantitatively) compared with recent state-of-the-art hyperspectral image super-resolution approaches. Moreover, other significant advantages can be pointed out by the use of the proposed approach, such as, a better network generalization ability, a limited computational burden, and a robustness with respect to the number of training samples.
Among the major remaining challenges for single image super resolution (SISR) is the capacity to recover coherent images with global shapes and local details conforming to human vision system. Recent generative adversarial network (GAN) based SISR methods have yielded overall realistic SR images, however, there are always unpleasant textures accompanied with structural distortions in local regions. To target these issues, we introduce the gradient branch into the generator to preserve structural information by restoring high-resolution gradient maps in SR process. In addition, we utilize a U-net based discriminator to consider both the whole image and the detailed per-pixel authenticity, which could encourage the generator to maintain overall coherence of the reconstructed images. Moreover, we have studied objective functions and LPIPS perceptual loss is added to generate more realistic and natural details. Experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art perceptual-driven SR methods in perception index (PI), and obtains more geometrically consistent and visually pleasing textures in natural image restoration.
