T Tauri remains an enigmatic triple star for which neither the evolutionary state of the stars themselves, nor the geometry of the complex outflow system is completely understood. Eight-meter class telescopes equipped with state-of-the-art adaptive optics provide the spatial resolution necessary to trace tangential motion of features over a timescale of a few years, and they help to associate them with the different outflows. We used J-, H-, and K-band high-contrast coronagraphic imaging with VLT-SPHERE recorded between 2016 and 2018 to map reflection nebulosities and obtain high precision near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the triple star. We also present molecular hydrogen emission maps of the 1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 micron obtained with LBT-LUCI during its commissioning period at the end of 2016. The data reveal a number of new features in the system, some of which are seen in reflected light and some are seen in H2 emission; furthermore, they can all be associated with the main outflows. The tangential motion of the features provides compelling evidence that T Tauri Sb drives the southeast-northwest outflow. T Tauri Sb has recently faded probably because of increased extinction as it passes through the southern circumbinary disk. While T Tauri Sb is approaching periastron, T Tauri Sa instead has brightened and is detected in all our J-band imagery for the first time.

We present new astrometric measurements of the components in the T Tauri system, and derive new orbits and masses. T Tauri was observed during the science verification time of the new extreme adaptive optics facility SPHERE at the VLT. We combine the new positions with recalibrated NACO-measurements and data from the literature. Model fits for the orbits of T Tau Sa and Sb around each other and around T Tau N yield orbital elements and individual masses of the stars Sa and Sb. Our new orbit for T Tau Sa/Sb is in good agreement with other recent results, which indicates that enough of the orbit has been observed for a reliable fit. The total mass of T Tau S is 2.65+/-0.11 Msun. The mass ratio M_Sb:M_Sa is 0.25+/-0.03, which yields individual masses of M_Sa = 2.12+/-0.10 Msun and M_Sb = 0.53+/-0.06 Msun. If our current knowledge of the orbital motions is used to compute the position of the southern radio source in the T Tauri system, then we find no evidence for the proposed dramatic change in its path.

Context. In multiple pre-main-sequence systems the lifetime of circumstellar disks appears to be shorter than around single stars, and the actual dissipation process may depend on the binary parameters of the systems. Aims. We report high spatial resolution observations of multiple T Tauri systems at optical and infrared wavelengths. We determine if the components are gravitationally bound and orbital motion is visible, derive orbital parameters and investigate possible correlations between the binary parameters and disk states. Methods. We selected 18 T Tau multiple systems (16 binary and two triple systems, yielding $16 + 2times2=20$ binary pairs) in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region from the survey by Leinert et al. (1993), with spectral types from K1 to M5 and separations from 0.22 (31 AU) to 5.8 (814 AU). We analysed data acquired in 2006-07 at Calar Alto using the AstraLux lucky imaging system, along with data from SPHERE and NACO at the VLT, and from the literature. Results. We found ten pairs to orbit each other, five pairs that may show orbital motion and five likely common proper motion pairs. We found no obvious correlation between the stellar parameters and binary configuration. The 10 $mu$m infra-red excess varies between 0.1 and 7.2 magnitudes (similar to the distribution in single stars, where it is between 1.7 and 9.1), implying that the presence of the binary star does not greatly influence the emission from the inner disk. Conclusions. We have detected orbital motion in young T Tauri systems over a timescale of $approx20$ years. Further observations with even longer temporal baseline will provide crucial information on the dynamics of these young stellar systems.

Context. The prototypical low-mass young stellar object, T Tauri, is a well-studied multiple system with at least three components. Aims. We aim to explore the T Tau system with the highest spatial resolution, study the time evolution of the known components, and re-determine the orbital parameters of the stars. Methods. Near-infrared classical imaging and integral field spectrograph observations were obtained during the Science Verification of SPHERE, the new high-contrast imaging facility at the VLT. The obtained FWHM of the primary star varies between 0.050 and 0.059, making these the highest spatial resolution near-infrared images of the T Tauri system obtained to date. Results. Our near-infrared images confirm the presence of extended emission south of T Tau Sa, reported in the literature. New narrow-band images show, for the first time, that this feature shows strong emission in both the Br-{gamma} and H2 1-0 S(1) lines. Broadband imaging at 2.27 {mu}m shows that T Tau Sa is 0.92 mag brighter than T Tau Sb, which is in contrast to observations from Jan. 2014 (when T Tau Sa was fainter than Sb), and demonstrates that T Tau Sa has entered a new period of high variability. The newly obtained astrometric positions of T Tau Sa and Sb agree with orbital fits from previous works. The orbit of T Tau S (the center of gravity of Sa and Sb) around T Tau N is poorly constrained by the available observations and can be fit with a range of orbits ranging from a nearly circular orbit with a period of 475 years to highly eccentric orbits with periods up to 2.7*10^4 years. We also detected a feature south of T Tau N, at a distance of $144 pm 3$ mas, which shows the properties of a new companion.
We report the results of optical spectroscopic monitoring observations of a T Tauri star, V409 Tau. A previous photometric study indicated that this star experienced dimming events due to the obscuration of light from the central star with a distorted circumstellar disk. We conducted medium-resolution (R ~10,000) spectroscopic observations with 2-m Nayuta telescope at Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory. Spectra were obtained in 18 nights between November 2015 and March 2016. Several absorption lines such as Ca I and Li, and the H alpha emission line were confirmed in the spectra. The Ic-band magnitudes of V409 Tau changed by approximately 1 magnitude during the observation epoch. The equivalent widths of the five absorption lines are roughly constant despite changes in the Ic-band magnitudes. We conclude that the light variation of the star is caused by the obscuration of light from the central star with a distorted circumstellar disk, based on the relationship between the equivalent widths of the absorption lines and the Ic-band magnitudes. The blue component of the H alpha emission line was dominant during the observation epoch, and an inverse P Cygni profile was observed in eight of the spectra. The time-variable inverse P Cygni profile of the H alpha emission line indicates unsteady mass accretion from the circumstellar disk to the central star.

We present a multi-wavelength analysis to reveal the nature of the enigmatic T Tauri triple star system. New optical and infrared measurements are coupled with archival X-ray, UV and mm datasets to show morphologies of disk material and outflow kinematics. A dark lane of obscuring material is seen in silhouette in several emission lines and in model-subtracted ALMA mm continuum dust residuals near the position of T Tau Sa+Sb, revealing the attenuating circumbinary ring around T Tau S. The flux variability of T Tau S is linked in part to the binary orbit; T Tau Sb brightens near orbital apastron as it emerges from behind circumbinary material. Outflow diagnostics confirm that T Tau N powers the blue-shifted western outflow, and the T Tau S binary drives the northwest-southeastern flow. Analysis of the southern outflow shows periodic arcs ejected from the T Tau system. Correlation of these arc locations and tangential kinematics with the orbit timing suggests that launch of the last four southern outflow ejections is contemporaneous with, and perhaps triggered by, the T Tau Sa+Sb binary periastron passage. We present a geometry of the T Tau triple that has the southern components foreground to T Tau N, obscured by a circumbinary ring, with mis-aligned disks and interacting outflows. Particularly, a wind from T Tauri Sa that is perpendicular to its circumstellar disk might interact with the circumbinary material, which may explain conflicting high contrast measurements of the system outflows in the literature. T Tauri is an important laboratory to understand early dynamical processes in young multiple systems. We discuss the historical and future characteristics of the system in this context.
