We introduce a dynamic stabilization scheme universally applicable to unidirectional nonlinear coherent waves. By abruptly changing the waveguiding properties, the breathing of wave packets subject to modulation instability can be stabilized as a result of the abrupt expansion a homoclinic orbit and its fall into an elliptic fixed point (center). We apply this concept to the nonlinear Schrodinger equation framework and show that an Akhmediev breather envelope, which is at the core of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence and extreme wave events, can be frozen into a steady periodic (dnoidal) wave by a suitable variation of a single external physical parameter. We experimentally demonstrate this general approach in the particular case of surface gravity water waves propagating in a wave flume with an abrupt bathymetry change. Our results highlight the influence of topography and waveguide properties on the lifetime of nonlinear waves and confirm the possibility to control them.

In this Letter we regard nonlinear gravity-capillary waves with parameter of nonlinearity being $varepsilon sim 0.1 div 0.25$. For this nonlinearity time scale separation does not occur and kinetic wave equation does not hold. An energy cascade in this case is built at the dynamic time scale (D-cascade) and is computed by the increment chain equation method first introduced in emph{Kartashova, emph{EPL} textbf{97} (2012), 30004.} We compute for the first time an analytical expression for the energy spectrum of nonlinear gravity-capillary waves as an explicit function depending on the ratio of surface tension to the gravity acceleration. It is shown that its two limits - pure capillary and pure gravity waves on a fluid surface - coincide with the previously obtained results. We also discuss relations of the model of D-cascade with a few known models used in the theory of nonlinear waves such as Zakharovs equation, resonance of the modes with nonlinear Stokes corrected frequencies and Benjamin-Feir index. These connections are crucial in the understanding and forecasting specifics of the energy transport in a variety of multi-component wave dynamics, from oceanography to optics, from plasma physics to acoustics.
We investigate flow of incompressible fluid in a cylindrical tube with elastic walls. The radius of the tube may change along its length. The discussed problem is connected to the blood flow in large human arteries and especially to nonlinear wave propagation due to the pulsations of the heart. The long-wave approximation for modeling of waves in blood is applied. The obtained model Korteweg-deVries equation possessing a variable coefficient is reduced to a nonlinear dynamical system of 3 first order differential equations. The low probability of arising of a solitary wave is shown. Periodic wave solutions of the model system of equations are studied and it is shown that the waves that are consequence of the irregular heart pulsations may be modeled by a sequence of parts of such periodic wave solutions.
In this paper, we show that a revised convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) can decrease, by orders of magnitude, the time needed for the phase-resolved prediction of waves in a spatiotemporal domain of a nonlinear dispersive wave field. The problem of predicting such waves suffers from two major challenges that have so far hindered analytical or direct computational solutions in real time or faster: (i) the reconstruction problem, that is, how one can calculate from measurable wave amplitude data the state of the wave field (wave components, nonlinear couplings, etc.), and (ii) if such a reconstruction is in hand, how to integrate equations fast enough to be able to predict an upcoming rouge wave in a timely manner. Here, we demonstrate that these two challenges can be overcome at once through advanced machine learning techniques based on spatiotemporal patches of the time history of wave height data in the domain. Specifically, as a benchmark here we consider equations that govern the evolution of weakly nonlinear surface gravity waves such as those propagating on the surface of the oceans. For the case of oceanic surface waves considered here, we demonstrate that the proposed methodology, while maintaining a high accuracy, can make phase-resolved predictions more than two orders of magnitude faster than numerically integrating governing equations.
We show experimentally that a stable wave propagating into a region characterized by an opposite current may become modulationaly unstable. Experiments have been performed in two independent wave tank facilities; both of them are equipped with a wavemaker and a pump for generating a current propagating in the opposite direction with respect to the waves. The experimental results support a recent conjecture based on a current-modified Nonlinear Schrodinger equation which establishes that rogue waves can be triggered by non-homogeneous current characterized by a negative horizontal velocity gradient.
We study propagation of traveling waves in a blood filled elastic artery with an axially symmetric dilatation (an idealized aneurysm) in long-wave approximation. The processes in the injured artery are modelled by equations for the motion of the wall of the artery and by equation for the motion of the fluid (the blood). For the case when balance of nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation in such a medium holds the model equations are reduced to a version of the Korteweg-deVries-Burgers equation with variable coefficients. Exact travelling-wave solution of this equation is obtained by the modified method of simplest equation where the differential equation of Riccati is used as a simplest equation. Effects of the dilatation geometry on the travelling-wave profile are considered.
