Using a low-energy effective field theory approach, we study some properties of models with large extra dimensions, in which quarks and leptons have localized wave functions in the extra dimensions. We consider models with two types of gauge groups: (i) the Standard-Model gauge group, and (ii) the left-right symmetric (LRS) gauge group. Our main focus is on the lepton sector of models with $n=2$ extra dimensions, in particular, neutrino masses and mixing. We analyze the requisite conditions that the models must satisfy to be in accord with data and present a solution for lepton wave functions in the extra dimensions that fulfills these conditions. As part of our work, we also present a new solution for quark wave function centers. Issues with flavor-changing neutral current effects are assessed. Finally, we remark on baryogenesis and dark matter in these models.

We consider a model where right-handed neutrinos propagate in a large compactified extra dimension, engendering Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes, while the standard model particles are restricted to the usual 4-dimensional brane. A mass term mixes the KK modes with the standard left-handed neutrinos, opening the possibility of change the 3 generation mixing pattern. We derive bounds on the maximum size of the extra dimension from neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that this model provides a possible explanation for the deficit of nu_e in Ga solar neutrino calibration experiments and of the anti-nu_e in short baseline reactor experiments.
We present a general model with universal extra dimensions in the presence of the bulk fermion masses and boundary localized kinetic terms, which are generically allowed by symmetries of five dimensional gauge theory. We provide a comprehensive analysis for a general UED model, including Kaluza-Klein mass spectra, their interactions with the SM particles, and constraints from LHC, electroweak tests, and dark matter experiments. Finally we show current bounds on the size of allowed universal bulk mass and universal brane-localized terms.
We analyze fermion masses and mixing in a general warped extra dimensional model, where all the Standard Model (SM) fields, including the Higgs, are allowed to propagate in the bulk. In this context, a slightly broken flavor symmetry imposed universally on all fermion fields, without distinction, can generate the full flavor structure of the SM, including quarks, charged leptons and neutrinos. For quarks and charged leptons, the exponential sensitivity of their wave-functions to small flavor breaking effects yield naturally hierarchical masses and mixing as it is usual in warped models with fermions in the bulk. In the neutrino sector, the exponential wave-function factors can be flavor-blind and thus insensitive to the small flavor symmetry breaking effects, directly linking their masses and mixing angles to the flavor symmetric structure of the 5D neutrino Yukawa couplings. The Higgs must be localized in the bulk and the model is naturally more successful in generalized warped scenarios where the metric background solution is different than $AdS_5$. We study these features in two simple frameworks, flavor complimentarily, and flavor democracy, which provide specific predictions and correlations between quarks and leptons, testable as more precise data in the neutrino sector becomes available.
In the framework of a left-right model containing mirror fermions with gauge group SU(3)$_{C} otimes SU(2)_{L} otimes SU(2)_{R} otimes U(1)_{Y^prime}$, we estimate the neutrino masses, which are found to be consistent with their experimental bounds and hierarchy. We evaluate the decay rates of the Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) processes $mu rightarrow e gamma$, $tau rightarrow mu gamma$ and $tau rightarrow egamma$. We obtain upper limits for the flavor-changing branching ratios in agreement with their present experimental bounds. We also estimate the decay rates of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the channels $N rightarrow W^{pm} l^{mp}$, $N rightarrow Z u_{l}$ and $N rightarrow H u_{l}$, which are roughly equal for large values of the heavy neutrino mass. Starting from the most general Majorana neutrino mass matrix, the smallness of active neutrino masses turns out from the interplay of the hierarchy of the involved scales and the double application of seesaw mechanism. An appropriate parameterization on the structure of the neutrino mass matrix imposing a symmetric mixing of electron neutrino with muon and tau neutrinos leads to Tri-bimaximal mixing matrix for light neutrinos.
Extra dimensions have proven to be a very useful tool in constructing new physics models. In earlier work, we began investigating toy models for the 5-D analog of the kinetic mixing/vector portal scenario where the interactions of dark matter, taken to be, e.g., a complex scalar, with the brane-localized fields of the Standard Model (SM) are mediated by a massive $U(1)_D$ dark photon living in the bulk. These models were shown to have many novel features differentiating them from their 4-D analogs and which, in several cases, avoided some well-known 4-D model building constraints. However, these gains were obtained at the cost of the introduction of a fair amount of model complexity, e.g., dark matter Kaluza-Klein excitations. In the present paper, we consider an alternative setup wherein the dark matter and the dark Higgs, responsible for $U(1)_D$ breaking, are both localized to the dark brane at the opposite end of the 5-D interval from where the SM fields are located with only the dark photon now being a 5-D field. The phenomenology of such a setup is explored for both flat and warped extra dimensions and compared to the previous more complex models.
