Development of the self-sustained quantum-electrodynamical (QED) cascade in a single strong laser pulse is studied analytically and numerically. The hydrodynamical approach is used to construct the analytical model of the cascade evolution, which includes the key features of the cascade observed in 3D QED particle-in-cell (QED-PIC) simulations such as the magnetic field predominance in the cascade plasma and laser energy absorption. The equations of the model are derived in the closed form and are solved numerically. Direct comparison between the solutions of the model equations and 3D QED-PIC simulations shows that our model is able to describe the complex nonlinear process of the cascade development qualitatively well. The various regimes of the interaction based on the intensity of the laser pulse are revealed in both the solutions of the model equations and the results of the QED-PIC simulations.

The QED cascade induced by the two counter-propagating lasers is studied. It is demonstrated that the probability of a seed-photon to create a pair is much larger than that of a seed-electron. By analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the electron and positron created by the seed-photon, it is found that the created particles are more probable to emit photons than the seed-electron. With these result, further more, we also demonstrate that the QED cascade can be easier to be triggered by the seed-photon than by the seed-electron with the same incident energy and the same laser.
A formula for the ionization rate in extremely intense electromagnetic field is proposed and used for numerical study of QED (quantum-electrodynamical) cascades in noble gases in the field of two counter-propagating laser pulses. It is shown that the number of the electron-positron pairs produced in the cascade increases with the atomic number of the gas where the gas density is taken to be reversely proportional to the atomic number. While the most electrons produced in the laser pulse front are expelled by the ponderomotive force from region occupied by the strong laser field there is a small portion of the electrons staying in the laser field for a long time until the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. This mechanism is relevant for all gases. For high-$Z$ gases there is an additional mechanism associated with the ionization of inner shells at the the instance when the laser field is strong enough for cascading. The role of both mechanisms for cascade initiation is revealed.
Electronic parametric instabilities of an ultrarelativistic circularly polarized laser pulse propagating in underdense plasmas are studied by numerically solving the dispersion relation which includes the effect of the radiation reaction force in laser-driven plasma dynamics. Emphasis is placed on studying the different modes in the laser-plasma system and identifying the absolute and convective nature of the unstable modes in a parameter map spanned by the normalized laser vector potential and the plasma density. Implications for the ultraintense laser-plasma experiments are pointed out.
While plasma often behaves diamagnetically, we demonstrate that the laser irradiation of a thin opaque target with an embedded target-transverse seed magnetic field $B_mathrm{seed}$ can trigger the generation of an order-of-magnitude stronger magnetic field with opposite sign at the target surface. Strong surface field generation occurs when the laser pulse is relativistically intense and results from the currents associated with the cyclotron rotation of laser-heated electrons transiting through the target and the compensating current of cold electrons. We derive a predictive scaling for this surface field generation, $B_mathrm{gen} sim - 2 pi B_mathrm{seed} Delta x/lambda_0$, where $Delta x$ is the target thickness and $lambda_0$ is the laser wavelength, and conduct 1D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations to confirm its applicability over a wide range of conditions. We additionally demonstrate that both the seed and surface-generated magnetic fields can have a strong impact on application-relevant plasma dynamics, for example substantially altering the overall expansion and ion acceleration from a $mu$m-thick laser-irradiated target with a kilotesla-level seed magnetic field.
Stochasticity effects in the spin (de)polarization of an ultrarelativistic electron beam during photon emissions in a counterpropoagating ultrastrong focused laser pulse in the quantum radiation reaction regime are investigated. We employ a Monte Carlo method to describe the electron dynamics semiclassically, and photon emissions as well as the electron radiative polarization quantum mechanically. While in the latter the photon emission is inherently stochastic, we were able to identify its imprints in comparison with the new developed semiclassical stochasticity-free method of radiative polarization applicable in the quantum regime. With an initially spin-polarized electron beam, the stochastic spin effects are seen in the dependence of the depolarization degree on the electron scattering angle and the electron final energy (spin stochastic diffusion). With an initially unpolarized electron beam, the spin stochasticity is exhibited in enhancing the known effect of splitting of the electron beam along the propagation direction into two oppositely polarized parts by an elliptically polarized laser pulse. The considered stochasticity effects for the spin are observable with currently achievable laser and electron beam parameters.
