We explore the existence of the collective orbital excitations, orbitons, in the canonical orbital system KCuF$_3$. Using the Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering we show that the non-dispersive high-energy peaks result from the Cu$^{2+}$ $dd$ orbital excitations. These high-energy modes show good agreement with the {it ab-initio} quantum chemistry calculation based on a single cluster, indicating that the $dd$ excitations are highly localized. At the same time, the low-energy excitations present clear dispersion. They match extremely well with the two-spinon continuum following the comparison with Mueller Ansatz calculations. The localized $dd$ excitations and the observation of the strongly dispersive magnetic excitations suggest that orbiton dispersion is below the resolution detection limit. Our results can reconcile with the strong {it local} Jahn-Teller effect in KCuF$_3$, which predominantly drives orbital ordering.

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RE$_{1-delta}$Sr$_delta$NiO$_2$ (RE$=$Nd, Pr), we study the role of Hunds coupling $J$ in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model which has been on the periphery of the attention. A region of negative effective Coulomb interaction of this model is revealed to be differentiated from three- and five-orbital models in their typical Hunds metal active fillings. We identify distinctive regimes including four different correlated metals, one of which stems from the proximity to a Mott insulator while the other three, which we call intermediate metal, weak Hunds metal, and valence-skipping metal, from the effect of $J$ being away from Mottness. Defining criteria characterizing these metals are suggested, establishing the existence of Hunds metallicity in two-orbital systems.

Pressure-dependent, low temperature inelastic light (Raman) scattering measurements of KCuF$_3$ show that applied pressure above $P^{*} sim$ 7 kbar suppresses a previously observed structural phase transition temperature to zero temperature in KCuF$_3$, resulting in the development of a $omegasim$ 0 fluctuational (quasielastic) response near $T sim$ 0 K. This pressure-induced fluctuational response --- which we associate with slow fluctuations of the CuF$_6$ octahedral orientation --- is temperature independent and exhibits a characteristic fluctuation rate that is much larger than the temperature, consistent with quantum fluctuations of the CuF$_6$ octahedra. A model of pseudospin-phonon coupling provides a qualitative description of both the temperature- and pressure-dependent evolution of the Raman spectra of KCuF$_3$.
The local structure of NaTiSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is examined across its Ti-dimerization orbital-assisted Peierls transition at 210 K. An atomic pair distribution function approach evidences local symmetry breaking preexisting far above the transition. The analysis unravels that on warming the dimers evolve into a short range orbital degeneracy lifted (ODL) state of dual orbital character, persisting up to at least 490 K. The ODL state is correlated over the length scale spanning $sim$6 sites of the Ti zigzag chains. Results imply that the ODL phenomenology extends to strongly correlated electron systems.
We investigate the electronic structure of cobalt atoms on a copper surface and in a copper host by combining density functional calculations with a numerically exact continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo treatment of the five-orbital impurity problem. In both cases we find low energy resonances in the density of states of all five Co $d$-orbitals. The corresponding self-energies indicate the formation of a Fermi liquid state at low temperatures. Our calculations yield the characteristic energy scale -- the Kondo temperature -- for both systems in good agreement with experiments. We quantify the charge fluctuations in both geometries and suggest that Co in Cu must be described by an Anderson impurity model rather than by a model assuming frozen impurity valency at low energies. We show that fluctuations of the orbital degrees of freedom are crucial for explaining the Kondo temperatures obtained in our calculations and measured in experiments.
The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations can induce unusual phenomena in the metallic interface between SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$. We consider effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling at this interface in the context of the recent observation of anisotropic magnetism. Firstly, we show how Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a system near a band-edge can account for the observed magnetic anisotropy. Secondly, we investigate the coupling between in-plane magnetic-moment anisotropy and nematicity in the form of an orbital imbalance between d$_{xz}$ / d$_{yz}$ orbitals. We estimate this coupling to be substantial in the low electron density regime. Such an orbital ordering can affect magneto transport.
