A variety of observations impose upper limits at the nano Gauss level on magnetic fields that are coherent on inter-galactic scales while blazar observations indicate a lower bound $sim 10^{-16}$ Gauss. Such magnetic fields can play an important astrophysical role, for example at cosmic recombination and during structure formation, and also provide crucial information for particle physics in the early universe. Magnetic fields with significant energy density could have been produced at the electroweak phase transition. The evolution and survival of magnetic fields produced on sub-horizon scales in the early universe, however, depends on the magnetic helicity which is related to violation of symmetries in fundamental particle interactions. The generation of magnetic helicity requires new CP violating interactions that can be tested by accelerator experiments via decay channels of the Higgs particle.

We investigate the cosmological and astrophysical constraints on superconducting cosmic strings (SCSs). SCS loops emit strong bursts of electromagnetic waves, which might affect various cosmological and astrophysical observations. We take into account the effect on the CMB anisotropy, CMB blackbody spectrum, BBN, observational implications on radio wave burst and X-ray or gamma-ray events, and stochastic gravitational wave background measured by pulsar timing experiments. We then derive constraints on the parameters of SCS from current observations and estimate prospects for detecting SCS signatures in on-going observations. As a result, we find that these constraints exclude broad parameter regions, and also that on-going radio wave observations can probe large parameter space.
We explore the possibility that matter bulk flows could generate the required vorticity in the electron-proton-photon plasma to source cosmic magnetic fields through the Harrison mechanism. We analyze the coupled set of perturbed Maxwell and Boltzmann equations for a plasma in which the matter and radiation components exhibit relative bulk motions at the background level. We find that, to first order in cosmological perturbations, bulk flows with velocities compatible with current Planck limits ($beta<8.5times 10^{-4}$ at $95%$ CL) could generate magnetic fields with an amplitude $10^{-21}$ G on 10 kpc comoving scales at the time of completed galaxy formation which could be sufficient to seed a galactic dynamo mechanism.
In this paper I review some recent, interlinked, work undertaken using cosmological perturbation theory -- a powerful technique for modelling inhomogeneities in the Universe. The common theme which underpins these pieces of work is the presence of non-adiabatic pressure, or entropy, perturbations. After a brief introduction covering the standard techniques of describing inhomogeneities in both Newtonian and relativistic cosmology, I discuss the generation of vorticity. As in classical fluid mechanics, vorticity is not present in linearized perturbation theory (unless included as an initial condition). Allowing for entropy perturbations, and working to second order in perturbation theory, I show that vorticity is generated, even in the absence of vector perturbations, by purely scalar perturbations, the source term being quadratic in the gradients of first order energy density and isocurvature, or non-adiabatic pressure perturbations. This generalizes Croccos theorem to a cosmological setting. I then introduce isocurvature perturbations in different models, focusing on the entropy perturbation in standard, concordance cosmology, and in inflationary models involving two scalar fields. As the final topic, I investigate magnetic fields, which are a potential observational consequence of vorticity in the early universe. I briefly review some recent work on including magnetic fields in perturbation theory in a consistent way. I show, using solely analytical techniques, that magnetic fields can be generated by higher order perturbations, albeit too small to provide the entire primordial seed field, in agreement with some numerical studies. I close with a summary and some potential extensions of this work.

It is well known that gravitons can convert into photons, and vice versa, in the presence of cosmological magnetic fields. We study this conversion process in the context of atomic dark matter scenario. In this scenario, we can expect cosmological dark magnetic fields, which are free from the stringent constraint from the cosmic microwave observations. We find that gravitons can effectively convert into dark photons in the presence of cosmological dark magnetic fields. The graviton-dark photon conversion effect may open up a new window for ultra high frequency gravitational waves.
Cosmological observations are used to test for imprints of an ultra-light axion-like field (ULA), with a range of potentials $V(phi)propto[1-cos(phi/f)]^n$ set by the axion-field value $phi$ and decay constant $f$. Scalar field dynamics dictate that the field is initially frozen and then begins to oscillate around its minimum when the Hubble parameter drops below some critical value. For $n!=!1$, once dynamical, the axion energy density dilutes as matter; for $n!=!2$ it dilutes as radiation and for $n!=!3$ it dilutes faster than radiation. Both the homogeneous evolution of the ULA and the dynamics of its linear perturbations are included, using an effective fluid approximation generalized from the usual $n=1$ case. ULA models are parameterized by the redshift $z_c$ when the field becomes dynamical, the fractional energy density $f_{z_c} equiv Omega_a(z_c)/Omega_{rm tot}(z_c)$ in the axion field at $z_c$, and the effective sound speed $c_s^2$. Using Planck, BAO and JLA data, constraints on $f_{z_c}$ are obtained. ULAs are degenerate with dark energy for all three potentials if $1+z_c lesssim 10$. When $3times10^4 gtrsim 1+z_c gtrsim 10 $, $f_{z_c}$ is constrained to be $ lesssim 0.004 $ for $n=1$ and $f_{z_c} lesssim 0.02 $ for the other two potentials. The constraints then relax with increasing $z_c$. These results strongly constrain ULAs as a resolution to cosmological tensions, such as discrepant measurements of the Hubble constant, or the EDGES measurement of the global 21 cm signal.
