We investigate the viability of extending the Standard Model with $S_1$ and $S_3$ scalar leptoquarks when the flavour structure is parametrized in terms of Froggatt-Nielsen charges. In contrast to a similar analysis with a vector leptoquark, we find essentially two solutions for the charges that fit the experimental constraints, which are dominated by the current tensions in $B$ decays. These two scenarios differ in their estimate of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $(g-2)$, but they both predict sizeable contributions to $tautomugamma$, $bar B_stotau^pmmu^mp$ and $B^+to K^+tau^+mu^-$ decays, whose branching ratios are close to the current experimental limits.

Effective field theory (EFT) approaches are widely used at the LHC, such that it is important to study their validity, and ease of matching to specific new physics models. In this paper, we consider an extension of the SM in which a top quark couples to a new heavy scalar. We find the dimension six operators generated by this theory at low energy, and match the EFT to the full theory up to NLO precision in the simplified model coupling. We then examine the range of validity of the EFT description in top pair production, finding excellent validity even if the scalar mass is only slightly above LHC energies, provided NLO corrections are included. In the absence of the latter, the LO EFT overestimates kinematic distributions, such that over-optimistic constraints on BSM contributions are obtained. We next examine the constraints on the EFT and full models that are expected to be obtained from both top pair and four top production at the LHC, finding for low scalar masses that both processes show similar exclusion power. However, for larger masses, estimated LHC uncertainties push constraints into the non-perturbative regime, where the full model is difficult to analyse, and thus not perturbatively matchable to the EFT. This highlights the necessity to improve uncertainties of SM hypotheses in top final states.
We consider, in more details than it was done previously, the effective low-energy behavior in the quantum theory of a light scalar field coupled to another scalar with much larger mass. The main target of our work is an IR decoupling of heavy degrees of freedom, including in the diagrams with mixed light-heavy contents in the loops. It is shown that the one-loop diagrams with mixed internal lines produce an IR non-local contributions which are exactly the same as the ones in the theory of the light scalar alone, with the effective self-interaction which can be obtained by the functional integration of the heavy scalar, almost neglecting its kinetic term. The same effect takes place in curved space, regardless of a larger amount of non-localities which show up in the effective model.
We examine new aspects of leptoquark (LQ) phenomenology using effective field theory (EFT). We construct a complete set of leading effective operators involving SU(2) singlets scalar LQ and the SM fields up to dimension six. We show that, while the renormalizable LQ-lepton-quark interaction Lagrangian can address the persistent hints for physics beyond the Standard Model in the B-decays $bar B to D^{(*)} tau bar u$, $bar B to bar K ell^+ ell^-$ and in the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the LQ higher dimensional effective operators may lead to new interesting effects associated with lepton number violation. These include the generation of one-loop sub-eV Majorana neutrino masses, mediation of neutrinoless double-$beta$ decay and novel LQ collider signals. For the latter, we focus on 3rd generation LQ ($phi_3$) in a framework with an approximate $Z_3$ generation symmetry, and show that one class of the dimension five LQ operators may give rise to a striking asymmetric same-charge $phi_3 phi_3$ pair-production signal, which leads to low background same-sign leptons signals at the LHC. For example, with $M_{phi_3} sim 1$ TeV and a new physics scale of $Lambda sim 5$ TeV, we expect about $5000$ positively charged $tau^+ tau^+$ events via $pp to phi_3 phi_3 to tau^+ tau^+ + 2 cdot j_b$ ($j_b$=b-jet) at the 13 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$. It is interesting to note that, in the LQ EFT framework, the expected same-sign lepton signals have a rate which is several times larger than the QCD LQ-mediated opposite-sign leptons signals, $gg,q bar q to phi_3 phi_3^* to ell^+ ell^- +X$. We also consider the same-sign charged lepton signals in the LQ EFT framework at higher energy hadron colliders such as a 27 TeV HE-LHC and a 100 TeV FCC-hh.
Beyond standard model (BSM) particles should be included in effective field theory in order to compute the scattering amplitudes involving these extra particles. We formulate an extension of Higgs effective field theory which contains arbitrary number of scalar and fermion fields with arbitrary electric and chromoelectric charges. The BSM Higgs sector is described by using the non-linear sigma model in a manner consistent with the spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking. The chiral order counting rule is arranged consistently with the loop expansion. The leading order Lagrangian is organized in accord with the chiral order counting rule. We use a geometrical language to describe the particle interactions. The parametrization redundancy in the effective Lagrangian is resolved by describing the on-shell scattering amplitudes only with the covariant quantities in the scalar/fermion field space. We introduce a useful coordinate (normal coordinate), which simplifies the computations of the on-shell amplitudes significantly. We show the high energy behaviors of the scattering amplitudes determine the curvature tensors in the scalar/fermion field space. The massive spinor-wavefunction formalism is shown to be useful in the computations of on-shell helicity amplitudes.
We use the boundary effective theory (BET) approach to thermal field theory in order to calculate the pressure of a system of massless scalar fields with quartic interaction. The method naturally separates the infrared physics, and is essentially non-perturbative. To lowest order, the main ingredient is the solution of the free Euler-Lagrange equation with non-trivial (time) boundary conditions. We derive a resummed pressure, which is in good agreement with recent calculations found in the literature, following a very direct and compact procedure.
