A multi-agent system designed to achieve distance-based shape control with flocking behavior can be seen as a mechanical system described by a Lagrangian function and subject to additional external forces. Forced variational integrators are given by the discretization of Lagrange-dAlembert principle for systems subject to external forces, and have proved useful for numerical simulation studies of complex dynamical systems. We derive forced variational integrators that can be employed in the context of control algorithms for distance-based shape with velocity consensus. In particular, we provide an accurate numerical integrator with a lower computational cost than traditional solutions, while preserving the configuration space and symmetries. We also provide an explicit expression for the integration scheme in the case of an arbitrary number of agents with double integrator dynamics. For a numerical comparison of the performances, we use a planar formation consisting of three autonomous agents.

This paper presents a novel control protocol for robust distance-based formation control with prescribed performance in which agents are subjected to unknown external disturbances. Connectivity maintenance and collision avoidance among neighboring agents are also handled by the appropriate design of certain performance bounds that constrain the inter-agent distance errors. As an extension to the proposed scheme, distance-based formation centroid maneuvering is also studied for disturbance-free agents, in which the formation centroid tracks a desired time-varying velocity. The proposed control laws are decentralized, in the sense that each agent employs local relative information regarding its neighbors to calculate its control signal. Therefore, the control scheme is implementable on the agents local coordinate frames. Using rigid graph theory, input-to-state stability, and Lyapunov based analysis, the results are established for minimally and infinitesimally rigid formations in 2-D or 3-D space. Furthermore, it is argued that the proposed approach increases formation robustness against shape distortions and can prevent formation convergence to incorrect shapes, which is likely to happen in conventional distance-based formation control methods. Finally, extensive simulation studies clarify and verify the proposed approach.

In this paper we investigate multi-agent discrete-event systems with partial observation. The agents can be divided into several groups in each of which the agents have similar (isomorphic) state transition structures, and thus can be relabeled into the same template. Based on the template a scalable supervisor whose state size and computational cost are independent of the number of agents is designed for the case of partial observation. The scalable supervisor under partial observation does not need to be recomputed regardless of how many agents are added to or removed from the system. We generalize our earlier results to partial observation by proposing sufficient conditions for safety and maximal permissiveness of the scalable least restrictive supervisor on the template level. An example is provided to illustrate the proposed scalable supervisory synthesis.
In this paper, a distributed learning leader-follower consensus protocol based on Gaussian process regression for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems with unknown dynamics is designed. We propose a distributed learning approach to predict the residual dynamics for each agent. The stability of the consensus protocol using the data-driven model of the dynamics is shown via Lyapunov analysis. The followers ultimately synchronize to the leader with guaranteed error bounds by applying the proposed control law with a high probability. The effectiveness and the applicability of the developed protocol are demonstrated by simulation examples.

Due to the wide application of average consensus algorithm, its security and privacy problems have attracted great attention. In this paper, we consider the system threatened by a set of unknown agents that are both malicious and curious, who add additional input signals to the system in order to perturb the final consensus value or prevent consensus, and try to infer the initial state of other agents. At the same time, we design a privacy-preserving average consensus algorithm equipped with an attack detector with a time-varying exponentially decreasing threshold for every benign agent, which can guarantee the initial state privacy of every benign agent, under mild conditions. The attack detector will trigger an alarm if it detects the presence of malicious attackers. An upper bound of false alarm rate in the absence of malicious attackers and the necessary and sufficient condition for there is no undetectable input by the attack detector in the system are given. Specifically, we show that under this condition, the system can achieve asymptotic consensus almost surely when no alarm is triggered from beginning to end, and an upper bound of convergence rate and some quantitative estimates about the error of final consensus value are given. Finally, numerical case is used to illustrate the effectiveness of some theoretical results.

UAV collective motion has become a hot research topic in recent years. The realization of UAV collective motion, however, relied heavily on centralized control method and suffered from instability. Inspired by bird flocking theory, a control strategy for UAV collective motion with distributed measure and control methods was proposed in this study. In order to appropriately adjust the inter-agent distance suitable for realization, the control law based on bird flocking theory was optimized, and the convergence of velocities and collision avoidance properties were presented through simulation results. Furthermore, the stable collective motion of two UAVs using visual relative information only with proposed strategy in both indoor and outdoor GPS-denied environments were realized.
