The blind HI survey Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) detected several unresolved sources in the Virgo cluster, which do not have optical counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The origin of these dark clouds is unknown. They might be crucial objects since they could be the so-called dark galaxies, that is, the dark matter halos without stellar content that are expected from cosmological simulations. In order to reveal the nature of the dark clouds, we took a deep optical image of one them, AGESVC1 282, with the newly-commissioned 1.4m Milankovic Telescope. After observing it for 10.4h in the $L$-filter, the image reached a surface-brightness limit of about 29.1 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in $V$. No optical counterpart was detected. We placed an upper limit on the $V$-band luminosity of the object of $1.1times10^7,L_odot$, giving a stellar mass below $1.4times10^7,M_odot$ and a HI-to-stellar mass ratio above 3.1. By inspecting archival HI observations of the surrounding region, we found that none of the standard explanations for optically dark HI clouds fits the available constraints on this object.

Context. The elliptical galaxy NGC 3923 is known to be surrounded by a number of stellar shells, probable remnants of an accreted galaxy. Despite its uniqueness, the deepest images of its outskirts come from the 1980s. On the basis of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), it has recently been predicted that a new shell lies in this region. Aims. We obtain the deepest image ever of the galaxy, map the tidal features in it, and search for the predicted shell. Methods. The image of the galaxy was taken by the MegaCam camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in the g band. It reached the surface-brightness limit of 29 mag/arcsec2. In addition, we reanalyzed an archival HST image of the galaxy. Results. We detected up to 42 shells in NGC 3923. This is by far the highest number among all shell galaxies. We present the description of the shells and other tidal features in the galaxy. A probable progenitor of some of these features was discovered. The shell system likely originates from two or more progenitors. The predicted shell was not detected, but the new image revealed that the prediction was based on incorrect assumptions and poor data.
The BL Lacertae object OJ 287 (z = 0.306) has unique double-peaked optical outbursts every ~12 years, and it presents one of the best cases for a small-separation binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) system, with an extremely massive primary log (M_BH/M_Sun) ~ 10.3. However, the host galaxy is unresolved or only marginally detected in all optical studies so far, indicating a large deviation from the bulge mass - SMBH mass relation. We have obtained deep, high spatial resolution i-band and K-band images of OJ~287 when the target was in a low state, which enable us to detect the host galaxy. We find the broad-band photometry of the host to be consistent with an early type galaxy with M_R = -22.5 and M_K = -25.2, placing it in the middle of the host galaxy luminosity distribution of BL Lacertae objects. The central supermassive black hole is clearly overmassive for a host galaxy of that luminosity, but not unprecedented, given some recent findings of other ``overmassive black holes in nearby galaxies.

We report optical observations of TGSS J1054+5832, a candidate high-redshift ($z=4.8pm2$) steep-spectrum radio galaxy, in $r$ and $i$ bands using the faint object spectrograph and camera mounted on 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT). The source previously detected at 150 MHz from Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and at 1420 MHz from Very Large Array has a known counterpart in near-infrared bands with $K$-band magnitude of AB 22. The source is detected in $i$-band with AB$24.3pm0.2$ magnitude in the DOT images presented here. The source remains undetected in the $r$-band image at a 2.5$sigma$ depth of AB 24.4 mag over an $1.2times1.2$ aperture. An upper limit to $i-K$ color is estimated to be $sim$2.3, suggesting youthfulness of the galaxy with active star formation. These observations highlight the importance and potential of the 3.6-m DOT for detections of faint galaxies.

We present $ugR$ optical images taken with the MMT/Megacam and the Subaru/Suprime of the Extended Groth Strip survey. The total survey covers an area of about $sim 1$ degree$^2$, including four sub-fields and is optimized for the study of galaxies at $zsim3$. Our methods for photometric calibration in AB magnitudes, the limiting magnitude and the galaxy number count are described. A sample of 1642 photometrically selected candidate LBGs to an apparent $R_{AB}$ magnitude limit of 25.0 is present. The average sky surface density of our LBGs sample is $sim$ 1.0 arcmin$^{-2}$, slightly higher than the previous finding.
We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sight through the torus. The iron emission line may be produced by moderately ionised iron (FeXII-FeXIII), as suggested by the shifted centroid energy and the low K{beta}/K{alpha} flux ratio. The soft X-ray emission is dominated by emission features, whose main excitation mechanism appears to be photoionisation, as confirmed by line diagnostics and the use of self-consistent models (CLOUDY).
