Entanglement swapping has played an important role in quantum information processing, and become one of the necessary core technologies in the future quantum network. In this paper, we study entanglement swapping for multi-particle pure states and maximally entangled states in qudit systems. We generalize the entanglement swapping of two pure states from the case where each quantum system contains two particles to the case of containing any number of particles, and consider the entanglement swapping between any number of systems. We also generalize the entanglement swapping chain of bipartite pure states to the one of multi-particle pure states. In addition, we consider the entanglement swapping chains for maximally entangled states.

We introduce a class of multi-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, and study entanglement swapping between two qubit systems for Bell states and for the class of GHZ states, respectively. We generalize the bi-system entanglement swapping of Bell states and multi-particle GHZ states to any number of qubit systems. We further study the entanglement swapping schemes between any number of Bell states and between any number of the introduced GHZ states in a detailed way, and propose the schemes that can generate two identical GHZ states. We illustrate the applications of such schemes in quantum information processing by proposing quantum protocols for quantum key distribution, quantum secret sharing and quantum private comparison.
We investigate sharing of bipartite entanglement in a scenario where half of an entangled pair is possessed and projectively measured by one observer, called Alice, while the other half is subjected to measurements performed sequentially, independently, and unsharply, by multiple observers, called Bobs. We find that there is a limit on the number of observers in this entanglement distribution scenario. In particular, for a two-qubit maximally entangled initial shared state, no more than twelve Bobs can detect entanglement with a single Alice for arbitrary -- possibly unequal -- sharpness parameters of the measurements by the Bobs. Moreover, the number of Bobs remains unaltered for a finite range of near-maximal pure initial entanglement, a feature that also occurs in the case of equal sharpness parameters at the Bobs. Furthermore, we show that for non-maximally entangled shared pure states, the number of Bobs reduces with the amount of initial entanglement, providing a coarse-grained but operational measure of entanglement.
A comparison is made of various searching procedures, based upon different entanglement measures or entanglement indicators, for highly entangled multi-qubits states. In particular, our present results are compared with those recently reported by Brown et al. [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 38 (2005) 1119]. The statistical distribution of entanglement values for the aforementioned multi-qubit systems is also explored.
As discussed in Wiseman and Vaccaro [quant-ph/9906125], the stationary state of an optical or atom laser far above threshold is a mixture of coherent field states with random phase, or, equivalently, a Poissonian mixture of number states. We are interested in which, if either, of these descriptions of $rho_{ss}$, is more natural. In the preceding paper we concentrated upon whether descriptions such as these are physically realizable (PR). In this paper we investigate another relevant aspect of these ensembles, their robustness. A robust ensemble is one for which the pure states that comprise it survive relatively unchanged for a long time under the system evolution. We determine numerically the most robust ensembles as a function of the parameters in the laser model: the self-energy $chi$ of the bosons in the laser mode, and the excess phase noise $ u$. We find that these most robust ensembles are PR ensembles, or similar to PR ensembles, for all values of these parameters. In the ideal laser limit ($ u=chi=0$), the most robust states are coherent states. As the phase noise $ u$ or phase dispersion $chi$ is increased, the most robust states become increasingly amplitude-squeezed. We find scaling laws for these states. As the phase diffusion or dispersion becomes so large that the laser output is no longer quantum coherent, the most robust states become so squeezed that they cease to have a well-defined coherent amplitude. That is, the quantum coherence of the laser output is manifest in the most robust PR states having a well-defined coherent amplitude. This lends support to the idea that robust PR ensembles are the most natural description of the state of the laser mode. It also has interesting implications for atom lasers in particular, for which phase dispersion due to self-interactions is expected to be large.
Quantum entanglement of pure states is usually quantified via the entanglement entropy, the von Neumann entropy of the reduced state. Entanglement entropy is closely related to entanglement distillation, a process for converting quantum states into singlets, which can then be used for various quantum technological tasks. The relation between entanglement entropy and entanglement distillation has been known only for the asymptotic setting, and the meaning of entanglement entropy in the single-copy regime has so far remained open. Here we close this gap by considering entanglement catalysis. We prove that entanglement entropy completely characterizes state transformations in the presence of entangled catalysts. Our results imply that entanglement entropy quantifies the amount of entanglement available in a bipartite pure state to be used for quantum information processing, giving asymptotic results an operational meaning also in the single-copy setup.
