Currently, many countries are facing the problems of aging population, serious imbalance of medical resources supply and demand, as well as uneven geographical distribution, resulting in a huge demand for remote e-health. Particularly, with invasions of COVID-19, the health of people and even social stability have been challenged unprecedentedly. To contribute to these urgent problems, this article proposes a general architecture of the remote e-health, where the city hospital provides the technical supports and services for remote hospitals. Meanwhile, 5G technologies supported telemedicine is introduced to satisfy the high-speed transmission of massive multimedia medical data, and further realize the sharing of medical resources. Moreover, to turn passivity into initiative to prevent COVID-19, a broad area epidemic prevention and control scheme is also investigated, especially for the remote areas. We discuss their principles and key features, and foresee the challenges, opportunities, and future research trends. Finally, a node value and content popularity based caching strategy is introduced to provide a preliminary solution of the massive data storage and low-latency transmission.
This paper proposes a novel QoE-aware SDN enabled NFV architecture for controlling and managing Future Multimedia Applications on 5G systems. The aim is to improve the QoE of the delivered multimedia services through the fulfilment of personalized QoE application requirements. This novel approach provides some new features, functionalities, concepts and opportunities for overcoming the key QoE provisioning limitations in current 4G systems such as increased network management complexity and inability to adapt dynamically to changing application, network transmission or traffic or end-users demand.
Cellular-Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) aims at resolving issues pertaining to the traditional usability of Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) networking. Specifically, C-V2X lowers the number of entities involved in vehicular communications and allows the inclusion of cellular-security solutions to be applied to V2X. For this, the evolvement of LTE-V2X is revolutionary, but it fails to handle the demands of high throughput, ultra-high reliability, and ultra-low latency alongside its security mechanisms. To counter this, 5G-V2X is considered as an integral solution, which not only resolves the issues related to LTE-V2X but also provides a function-based network setup. Several reports have been given for the security of 5G, but none of them primarily focuses on the security of 5G-V2X. This article provides a detailed overview of 5G-V2X with a security-based comparison to LTE-V2X. A novel Security Reflex Function (SRF)-based architecture is proposed and several research challenges are presented related to the security of 5G-V2X. Furthermore, the article lays out requirements of Ultra-Dense and Ultra-Secure (UD-US) transmissions necessary for 5G-V2X.
Fifth generation (5G) aims to connect massive devices with even higher reliability, lower latency and even faster transmission speed, which are vital for implementing the e-health systems. However, the current efforts on 5G e-health systems are still not enough to accomplish its full blueprint. In this article, we first discuss the related technologies from physical layer, upper layer and cross layer perspectives on designing the 5G e-health systems. We afterwards elaborate two use cases according to our implementations, i.e., 5G e-health systems for remote health and 5G e-health systems for Covid-19 pandemic containment. We finally envision the future research trends and challenges of 5G e-health systems.
The smart grid utilizes many Internet of Things (IoT) applications to support its intelligent grid monitoring and control. The requirements of the IoT applications vary due to different tasks in the smart grid. In this paper, we propose a new computing paradigm to offer location-aware, latencysensitive monitoring and intelligent control for IoT applications in the smart grid. In particular, a new fog-based architecture and programming model is designed. Fog computing extends computing to the edge of a network, which has a perfect match to IoT applications. However, existing schemes can hardly satisfy the distributed coordination within fog computing nodes in the smart grid. In the proposed model, we introduce a new distributed fog computing coordinator, which periodically gathers information of fog computing nodes, e.g., remaining resources, tasks, etc. Moreover, the fog computing coordinator also manages jobs so that all computing nodes can collaborate on complex tasks. In addition, we construct a working prototype of intelligent electric vehicle service to evaluate the proposed model. Experiment results are also presented to demonstrate that our proposed model exceed the traditional fog computing schemes for IoT applications in the smart grid.
Mobility is the backbone of urban life and a vital economic factor in the development of the world. Rapid urbanization and the growth of mega-cities is bringing dramatic changes in the capabilities of vehicles. Innovative solutions like autonomy, electrification, and connectivity are on the horizon. How, then, we can provide ubiquitous connectivity to the legacy and autonomous vehicles? This paper seeks to answer this question by combining recent leaps of innovation in network virtualization with remarkable feats of wireless communications. To do so, this paper proposes a novel paradigm called the Internet of autonomous vehicles (IoAV). We begin painting the picture of IoAV by discussing the salient features, and applications of IoAV which is followed by a detailed discussion on the key enabling technologies. Next, we describe the proposed layered architecture of IoAV and uncover some critical functions of each layer. This is followed by the performance evaluation of IoAV which shows the significant advantage of the proposed architecture in terms of transmission time and energy consumption. Finally, to best capture the benefits of IoAV, we enumerate some social and technological challenges and explain how some unresolved issues can disrupt the widespread use of autonomous vehicles in the future.
