Water mediates electrostatic interactions via the orientation of its dipoles around ions, molecules, and interfaces. This induced water polarization consequently influences multiple phenomena. In particular, water polarization modulated by nanoconfinement affects ion adsorption and transport, biomolecular self-assembly, and surface chemical reactions. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to understand how water-mediated interactions change at the nanoscale. Here we show that near the graphene surface anion-cation interactions do not obey the translational and isotropic symmetries of Coulombs law. We identify a new property, referred to as non-reciprocity, which describes the non-equivalent and directional interaction between two oppositely charged ions near the confining surface when their positions with respect to the interface are exchanged. Specifically, upon exchange of the two ions positions along the surface normal direction the interaction energy changes by about 5$k_BT$. In both cases, confinement enhances the attraction between two oppositely charged ions near the graphene surface, while intercalation of one ion into the graphene layers shifts the interaction to repulsive. While the water permittivity in confinement is different from that in bulk, the effects observed here via molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray reflectivity experiments cannot be accounted for by current permittivity models. Our work shows that the water structure is not enough to infer electrostatic interactions near interfaces.

Density Functional Theory calculations are used to investigate the role of substrate-induced cooperative effects on the adsorption of water on a partially oxidized transition metal surface, O(2x2)/Ru(0001). Focussing particularly on the dimer configuration, we analyze the different contributions to its binding energy. A significant reinforcement of the intermolecular hydrogen-bond (H-bond), also supported by the observed frequency shifts of the vibration modes, is attributed to the polarization of the donor molecule when bonded to the Ru atoms in the substrate. This result is further confirmed by our calculations for a water dimer interacting with a small Ru cluster, which clearly show that the observed effect does not depend critically on fine structural details and/or the presence of co-adsorbates. Interestingly, the cooperative reinforcement of the H-bond is suppressed when the acceptor molecule, instead of the donor, is bonded to the surface. This simple observation can be used to rationalize the relative stability of different condensed structures of water on metallic substrates.

We present a theoretical analysis of the effect of dielectric confinement on the Coulomb interaction in dielectrically modulated quantum structures. We discuss the implications of the strong enhancement of the electron-hole and electron-electron coupling for two specific examples: (i) GaAs-based quantum wires with remote oxide barriers, where combined quantum and dielectric confinements are predicted to lead to room temperature exciton binding, and (ii) semiconductor quantum dots in colloidal environments, where the many-body ground states and the addition spectra are predicted to be drastically altered by the dielectric environment.
Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the structures and transport properties of dense liquid hydrogen at densities of 10-100 g/cm3 and temperatures of 0.1-1 eV are fully assessed using textit{ab initio} path-integral molecular dynamics simulations. With the inclusion of NQEs, ionic diffusions are strongly enhanced by the magnitude from 100% to 15% with increasing temperature, while electrical conductivities are significantly suppressed. The analyses of ionic structures and zero-point energy show also the importance of NQEs in these regime. The significant quantum delocalization of ions introduces expressively different scattering cross section between protons compared with classical particle treatments, which can explain the large alterability of transport behaviors. Furthermore, the energy, pressure, and isotope effects are also greatly influenced by NQEs. The complex behaviors show that NQEs can not be neglected for dense hydrogen even in the warm dense regime.
A simple and completely general representation of the exact exchange-correlation functional of density-functional theory is derived from the universal Lieb-Oxford bound, which holds for any Coulomb-interacting system. This representation leads to an alternative point of view on popular hybrid functionals, providing a rationale for why they work and how they can be constructed. A similar representation of the exact correlation functional allows to construct fully non-empirical hyper-generalized-gradient approximations (HGGAs), radically departing from established paradigms of functional construction. Numerical tests of these HGGAs for atomic and molecular correlation energies and molecular atomization energies show that even simple HGGAs match or outperform state-of-the-art correlation functionals currently used in solid-state physics and quantum chemistry.

The growth of wafer-scale and uniform monoclinic VO2 film was a challenge if considering the multivalent vanadium atom and the various phase structures of VO2 compound. Directly oxidizing metallic vanadium film in oxygen gas seemed to be an easy way, while the oxidation parameters were extremely sensitive due to the critical preparation window. Here we proposed a facile thermal oxidation by water-vapor to produce wafer-scale VO2 films with high quality. Results indicated that by using the water-vapor oxidant, the temperature window for VO2 growth was greatly broadened. In addition, the obtained wafer-size VO2 film showed very uniform surface and sharp resistance change. The chemical reaction routes with water-vapor were calculated, which favored the VO2 film growth. Our results not only demonstrated that the water-vapor could be used as a modest oxidizing agent, but also showed the unique advantage for large size VO2 film preparation.
