The 3D volumetric shape of the hearts left ventricle (LV) myocardium (MYO) wall provides important information for diagnosis of cardiac disease and invasive procedure navigation. Many cardiac image segmentation methods have relied on detection of region-of-interest as a pre-requisite for shape segmentation and modeling. With segmentation results, a 3D surface mesh and a corresponding point cloud of the segmented cardiac volume can be reconstructed for further analyses. Although state-of-the-art methods (e.g., U-Net) have achieved decent performance on cardiac image segmentation in terms of accuracy, these segmentation results can still suffer from imaging artifacts and noise, which will lead to inaccurate shape modeling results. In this paper, we propose a PC-U net that jointly reconstructs the point cloud of the LV MYO wall directly from volumes of 2D CT slices and generates its segmentation masks from the predicted 3D point cloud. Extensive experimental results show that by incorporating a shape prior from the point cloud, the segmentation masks are more accurate than the state-of-the-art U-Net results in terms of Dices coefficient and Hausdorff distance. The proposed joint learning framework of our PC-U net is beneficial for automatic cardiac image analysis tasks because it can obtain simultaneously the 3D shape and segmentation of the LV MYO walls.

Vessel stenosis is a major risk factor in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). To analyze the degree of vessel stenosis for supporting the treatment management, extraction of coronary artery area from Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA) is regarded as a key procedure. However, manual segmentation by cardiologists may be a time-consuming task, and present a significant inter-observer variation. Although various computer-aided approaches have been developed to support segmentation of coronary arteries in CTA, the results remain unreliable due to complex attenuation appearance of plaques, which are the cause of the stenosis. To overcome the difficulties caused by attenuation ambiguity, in this paper, a 3D multi-channel U-Net architecture is proposed for fully automatic 3D coronary artery reconstruction from CTA. Other than using the original CTA image, the main idea of the proposed approach is to incorporate the vesselness map into the input of the U-Net, which serves as the reinforcing information to highlight the tubular structure of coronary arteries. The experimental results show that the proposed approach could achieve a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.8 in comparison to around 0.6 attained by previous CNN approaches.
In this paper, we propose a method to obtain a compact and accurate 3D wireframe representation from a single image by effectively exploiting global structural regularities. Our method trains a convolutional neural network to simultaneously detect salient junctions and straight lines, as well as predict their 3D depth and vanishing points. Compared with the state-of-the-art learning-based wireframe detection methods, our network is simpler and more unified, leading to better 2D wireframe detection. With global structural priors from parallelism, our method further reconstructs a full 3D wireframe model, a compact vector representation suitable for a variety of high-level vision tasks such as AR and CAD. We conduct extensive evaluations on a large synthetic dataset of urban scenes as well as real images. Our code and datasets have been made public at https://github.com/zhou13/shapeunity.
Automatic segmentation of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facilitates efficient and accurate volume measurement in clinical applications. However, due to anisotropic resolution and ambiguous border (e.g., right ventricular endocardium), existing methods suffer from the degradation of accuracy and robustness in 3D cardiac MRI video segmentation. In this paper, we propose a novel Deformable U-Net (DeU-Net) to fully exploit spatio-temporal information from 3D cardiac MRI video, including a Temporal Deformable Aggregation Module (TDAM) and a Deformable Global Position Attention (DGPA) network. First, the TDAM takes a cardiac MRI video clip as input with temporal information extracted by an offset prediction network. Then we fuse extracted temporal information via a temporal aggregation deformable convolution to produce fused feature maps. Furthermore, to aggregate meaningful features, we devise the DGPA network by employing deformable attention U-Net, which can encode a wider range of multi-dimensional contextual information into global and local features. Experimental results show that our DeU-Net achieves the state-of-the-art performance on commonly used evaluation metrics, especially for cardiac marginal information (ASSD and HD).
Segmentation of pancreas is important for medical image analysis, yet it faces great challenges of class imbalance, background distractions and non-rigid geometrical features. To address these difficulties, we introduce a Deep Q Network(DQN) driven approach with deformable U-Net to accurately segment the pancreas by explicitly interacting with contextual information and extract anisotropic features from pancreas. The DQN based model learns a context-adaptive localization policy to produce a visually tightened and precise localization bounding box of the pancreas. Furthermore, deformable U-Net captures geometry-aware information of pancreas by learning geometrically deformable filters for feature extraction. Experiments on NIH dataset validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in pancreas segmentation.

Single-image room layout reconstruction aims to reconstruct the enclosed 3D structure of a room from a single image. Most previous work relies on the cuboid-shape prior. This paper considers a more general indoor assumption, i.e., the room layout consists of a single ceiling, a single floor, and several vertical walls. To this end, we first employ Convolutional Neural Networks to detect planes and vertical lines between adjacent walls. Meanwhile, estimating the 3D parameters for each plane. Then, a simple yet effective geometric reasoning method is adopted to achieve room layout reconstruction. Furthermore, we optimize the 3D plane parameters to reconstruct a geometrically consistent room layout between planes and lines. The experimental results on public datasets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.
