Peking Opera has been the most dominant form of Chinese performing art since around 200 years ago. A Peking Opera singer usually exhibits a very strong personal style via introducing improvisation and expressiveness on stage which leads the actual rhythm and pitch contour to deviate significantly from the original music score. This inconsistency poses a great challenge in Peking Opera singing voice synthesis from a music score. In this work, we propose to deal with this issue and synthesize expressive Peking Opera singing from the music score based on the Duration Informed Attention Network (DurIAN) framework. To tackle the rhythm mismatch, Lagrange multiplier is used to find the optimal output phoneme duration sequence with the constraint of the given note duration from music score. As for the pitch contour mismatch, instead of directly inferring from music score, we adopt a pseudo music score generated from the real singing and feed it as input during training. The experiments demonstrate that with the proposed system we can synthesize Peking Opera singing voice with high-quality timbre, pitch and expressiveness.

This paper presents a method that generates expressive singing voice of Peking opera. The synthesis of expressive opera singing usually requires pitch contours to be extracted as the training data, which relies on techniques and is not able to be manually labeled. With the Duration Informed Attention Network (DurIAN), this paper makes use of musical note instead of pitch contours for expressive opera singing synthesis. The proposed method enables human annotation being combined with automatic extracted features to be used as training data thus the proposed method gives extra flexibility in data collection for Peking opera singing synthesis. Comparing with the expressive singing voice of Peking opera synthesised by pitch contour based system, the proposed musical note based system produces comparable singing voice in Peking opera with expressiveness in various aspects.
Singing voice conversion is converting the timbre in the source singing to the target speakers voice while keeping singing content the same. However, singing data for target speaker is much more difficult to collect compared with normal speech data.In this paper, we introduce a singing voice conversion algorithm that is capable of generating high quality target speakers singing using only his/her normal speech data. First, we manage to integrate the training and conversion process of speech and singing into one framework by unifying the features used in standard speech synthesis system and singing synthesis system. In this way, normal speech data can also contribute to singing voice conversion training, making the singing voice conversion system more robust especially when the singing database is small.Moreover, in order to achieve one-shot singing voice conversion, a speaker embedding module is developed using both speech and singing data, which provides target speaker identify information during conversion. Experiments indicate proposed sing conversion system can convert source singing to target speakers high-quality singing with only 20 seconds of target speakers enrollment speech data.
End-to-end speech synthesis is a promising approach that directly converts raw text to speech. Although it was shown that Tacotron2 outperforms classical pipeline systems with regards to naturalness in English, its applicability to other languages is still unknown. Japanese could be one of the most difficult languages for which to achieve end-to-end speech synthesis, largely due to its character diversity and pitch accents. Therefore, state-of-the-art systems are still based on a traditional pipeline framework that requires a separate text analyzer and duration model. Towards end-to-end Japanese speech synthesis, we extend Tacotron to systems with self-attention to capture long-term dependencies related to pitch accents and compare their audio quality with classical pipeline systems under various conditions to show their pros and cons. In a large-scale listening test, we investigated the impacts of the presence of accentual-type labels, the use of force or predicted alignments, and acoustic features used as local condition parameters of the Wavenet vocoder. Our results reveal that although the proposed systems still do not match the quality of a top-line pipeline system for Japanese, we show important stepping stones towards end-to-end Japanese speech synthesis.
Explicit duration modeling is a key to achieving robust and efficient alignment in text-to-speech synthesis (TTS). We propose a new TTS framework using explicit duration modeling that incorporates duration as a discrete latent variable to TTS and enables joint optimization of whole modules from scratch. We formulate our method based on conditional VQ-VAE to handle discrete duration in a variational autoencoder and provide a theoretical explanation to justify our method. In our framework, a connectionist temporal classification (CTC) -based force aligner acts as the approximate posterior, and text-to-duration works as the prior in the variational autoencoder. We evaluated our proposed method with a listening test and compared it with other TTS methods based on soft-attention or explicit duration modeling. The results showed that our systems rated between soft-attention-based methods (Transformer-TTS, Tacotron2) and explicit duration modeling-based methods (Fastspeech).
This work presents a novel back-end framework for speaker verification using graph attention networks. Segment-wise speaker embeddings extracted from multiple crops within an utterance are interpreted as node representations of a graph. The proposed framework inputs segment-wise speaker embeddings from an enrollment and a test utterance and directly outputs a similarity score. We first construct a graph using segment-wise speaker embeddings and then input these to graph attention networks. After a few graph attention layers with residual connections, each node is projected into a one-dimensional space using affine transform, followed by a readout operation resulting in a scalar similarity score. To enable successful adaptation for speaker verification, we propose techniques such as separating trainable weights for attention map calculations between segment-wise speaker embeddings from different utterances. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated using three different speaker embedding extractors trained with different architectures and objective functions. Experimental results demonstrate consistent improvement over various baseline back-end classifiers, with an average equal error rate improvement of 20% over the cosine similarity back-end without test time augmentation.
