We perform a systematic study of S-duality for ${cal N}=2$ supersymmetric non-linear abelian theories on a curved manifold. Localization can be used to compute certain supersymmetric observables in these theories. We point out that localization and S-duality acting as a Legendre transform are not compatible. For these theories S-duality should be interpreted as Fourier transform and we provide some evidence for this. We also suggest the notion of a coholomological prepotential for an abelian theory that gives the same partition function as a given non-abelian supersymmetric theory.

We study 7D maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on curved manifolds that admit Killing spinors. If the manifold admits at least two Killing spinors (Sasaki-Einstein manifolds) we are able to rewrite the supersymmetric theory in terms of a cohomological complex. In principle this cohomological complex makes sense for any K-contact manifold. For the case of toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds we derive explicitly the perturbative part of the partition function and speculate about the non-perturbative part. We also briefly discuss the case of 3-Sasaki manifolds and suggest a plausible form for the full non-perturbative answer.
Whenever available, refined BPS indices provide considerably more information on the spectrum of BPS states than their unrefined version. Extending earlier work on the modularity of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting D4-D2-D0 brane bound states in type IIA strings on a Calabi-Yau threefold $mathfrak{Y}$, we construct the modular completion of generating functions of refined BPS indices supported on a divisor class. Although for compact $mathfrak{Y}$ the refined indices are not protected, switching on the refinement considerably simplifies the construction of the modular completion. Furthermore, it leads to a non-commutative analogue of the TBA equations, which suggests a quantization of the moduli space consistent with S-duality. In contrast, for a local CY threefold given by the total space of the canonical bundle over a complex surface $S$, refined BPS indices are well-defined, and equal to Vafa-Witten invariants of $S$. Our construction provides a modular completion of the generating function of these refined invariants for arbitrary rank. In cases where all reducible components of the divisor class are collinear (which occurs e.g. when $b_2(mathfrak{Y})=1$, or in the local case), we show that the holomorphic anomaly equation satisfied by the completed generating function truncates at quadratic order. In the local case, it agrees with an earlier proposal by Minahan et al for unrefined invariants, and extends it to the refined level using the afore-mentioned non-commutative structure. Finally, we show that these general predictions reproduce known results for $U(2)$ and $U(3)$ Vafa-Witten theory on $mathbb{P}^2$, and make them explicit for $U(4)$.
Positivity bounds coming from consistency of UV scattering amplitudes are in general insufficient to prove the weak gravity conjecture for theories beyond Einstein-Maxwell. Additional ingredients about the UV may be necessary to exclude those regions of parameter space which are naively in conflict with the predictions of the weak gravity conjecture. In this paper we explore the consequences of imposing additional symmetries inherited from the UV theory on higher-derivative operators for Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theory. Using black hole thermodynamics, for a preserved SL($2,mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find that the weak gravity conjecture then does follow from positivity bounds. For a preserved O($d,d;mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find a simple condition on the two Wilson coefficients which ensures the positivity of corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio and that follows from the null energy condition alone. We find that imposing supersymmetry on top of either of these symmetries gives corrections which vanish identically, as expected for BPS states.
Holographic RG flows dual to QFTs on maximally symmetric curved manifolds (dS$_d$, AdS$_d$, and $S^d$) are considered in the framework of Einstein-dilaton gravity in $d+1$ dimensions. A general dilaton potential is used and the flows are driven by a scalar relevant operator. The general properties of such flows are analyzed and the UV and IR asymptotics computed. New RG flows can appear at finite curvature which do not have a zero curvature counterpart. The so-called bouncing flows, where the $beta$-function has a branch cut at which it changes sign, are found to persist at finite curvature. Novel quantum first-order phase transitions are found, triggered by a variation in the $d$-dimensional curvature in theories allowing multiple ground states.
We study $F$-functions in the context of field theories on $S^3$ using gauge-gravity duality, with the radius of $S^3$ playing the role of RG scale. We show that the on-shell action, evaluated over a set of holographic RG flow solutions, can be used to define good $F$-functions, which decrease monotonically along the RG flow from the UV to the IR for a wide range of examples. If the operator perturbing the UV CFT has dimension $Delta > 3/2$ these $F$-functions correspond to an appropriately renormalized free energy. If instead the perturbing operator has dimension $Delta < 3/2$ it is the quantum effective potential, i.e. the Legendre transform of the free energy, which gives rise to good $F$-functions. We check that these observations hold beyond holography for the case of a free fermion on $S^3$ ($Delta=2$) and the free boson on $S^3$ ($Delta=1$), resolving a long-standing problem regarding the non-monotonicity of the free energy for the free massive scalar. We also show that for a particular choice of entangling surface, we can define good $F$-functions from an entanglement entropy, which coincide with certain $F$-functions obtained from the on-shell action.
