In the past decade, the advent of time-resolved spectroscopic tools has provided a new ground to explore fundamental interactions in solids and to disentangle degrees of freedom whose coupling leads to broad structures in the frequency domain. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) has been utilized to directly study the relaxation dynamics of a metal in the presence of electron-phonon coupling. The effect of photo-excitations on the real and imaginary part of the self-energy as well as the time scale associated with different recombination processes are discussed. In contrast to a theoretical model, the phonon energy does not set a clear scale governing quasiparticle dynamics, which is also different from the results observed in a superconducting material. These results point to the need for a more complete theoretical framework to understand electron-phonon interaction in a photo-excited state.

The zone-center $E_{2g}$ modes play a crucial role in MgB$_2$, controlling the scattering mechanisms in the normal state as well the superconducting pairing. Here, we demonstrate via first-principles quantum-field theory calculations that, due to the anisotropic electron-phonon interaction, a $hot$-$phonon$ regime where the $E_{2g}$ phonons can achieve significantly larger effective populations than other modes, is triggered in MgB$_2$ by the interaction with an ultra-short laser pulse. Spectral signatures of this scenario in ultrafast pump-probe Raman spectroscopy are discussed in detail, revealing also a fundamental role of nonadiabatic processes in the optical features of the $E_{2g}$ mode.

Distinctive superconducting behaviors between bulk and monolayer FeSe make it challenging to obtain a unified picture of all FeSe-based superconductors. We investigate the ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics of an intercalated superconductor (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe, which is a bulk crystal but shares a similar electronic structure with single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. We obtain the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant {lambda}A1g (0.22 +/- 0.04), which well bridges that of bulk FeSe crystal and single-layer FeSe on SrTiO3. Moreover, we find that such a positive correlation between {lambda}A1g and superconducting Tc holds among all known FeSe-based superconductors, even in line with reported FeAs-based superconductors. Our observation indicates possible universal role of EPC in the superconductivity of all known categories of iron-based superconductors, which is a critical step towards achieving a unified superconducting mechanism for all iron-based superconductors.
Quantitative knowledge of electron-phonon coupling is important for many applications as well as for the fundamental understanding of nonequilibrium relaxation processes. Time-resolved diffraction provides direct access to this knowledge through its sensitivity to laser-induced lattice dynamics. Here, we present an approach for analyzing time-resolved polycrystalline diffraction data. A two-step routine is used to minimize the number of time-dependent fit parameters. The lattice dynamics are extracted reliably by finding the best fit to the full transient diffraction pattern rather than by analyzing transient changes of individual Debye-Scherrer rings. We apply this approach to platinum, an important component of novel photocatalytic and spintronic applications, for which a large variation of literature values exists for the electron-phonon coupling parameter $G_mathrm{ep}$. Based on the extracted evolution of the atomic mean squared displacement (MSD) and using a two-temperature model (TTM), we obtain $G_mathrm{ep}=(3.9pm0.2)cdot10^{17}frac{mathrm{W}}{mathrm{m}^3hspace{1pt}mathrm{K}}$. We find that at least up to an absorbed energy density of $124hspace{2pt}frac{mathrm{J}}{mathrm{cm}^3}$, $G_mathrm{ep}$ is not fluence-dependent. Our results for the lattice dynamics of platinum provide insights into electron-phonon coupling and phonon thermalization and constitute a basis for quantitative descriptions of platinum-based heterostructures in nonequilibrium conditions.
The temperature evolution of GdFeCo electrons following optical heating plays a key role in all optical switching of GdFeCo and is primarily governed by the strength of coupling between electrons and phonons. Typically, the strength of electron-phonon coupling in a metal is deduced by monitoring changes in reflectance following optical heating and then analyzing the transient reflectance with a simple two-temperature thermal model. In a magnetic metal, the change in reflectance cannot be assumed to depend only the electron and phonon temperatures because a metals reflectance also depends on the magnetization. To deduce the electron-phonon coupling constant in GdFeCo, we analyze thermal transport in Au and GdFeCo bilayers following optical heating of the GdFeCo electrons. We use the reflectance of the Au layer to monitor the temperature evolution of the Au phonons. By interpreting the response of the bilayer to heating with a thermal model, we determine the electron-phonon coupling constant in GdFeCo to be 6 x 10^17 W/(m^3-K) corresponding to an electron-phonon relaxation time in GdFeCo of ~150 fs.
The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and phonons upon laser excitation are often described by the two-temperature model, which assumes that both subsystems are separately in thermal equilibrium. However, recent experiments show that this description is not sufficient to describe the out-of-equilibrium dynamics on ultrashort timescales. Here, we extend and apply a parameter-free microscopic out-of-equilibrium model to describe the ultrafast laser-induced system dynamics of archetypical metallic systems such as gold, aluminum, iron, nickel, and cobalt. We report strong deviations from the two-temperature model on the picosecond timescale for all the materials studied, even for those where the assumption of separate thermal equilibriums seemed less restrictive, like in gold. Furthermore, we demonstrate the importance of the phonon-mode dependent electron-phonon coupling for the relaxation process and reveal the significance of this channel in the lattice equilibration through an indirect coupling between phonons via the electronic system.
