The Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm and its variants are a fundamental technique for rigid registration between two point sets, with wide applications in different areas from robotics to 3D reconstruction. The main drawbacks for ICP are its slow convergence as well as its sensitivity to outliers, missing data, and partial overlaps. Recent work such as Sparse ICP achieves robustness via sparsity optimization at the cost of computational speed. In this paper, we propose a new method for robust registration with fast convergence. First, we show that the classical point-to-point ICP can be treated as a majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm, and propose an Anderson acceleration approach to speed up its convergence. In addition, we introduce a robust error metric based on the Welschs function, which is minimized efficiently using the MM algorithm with Anderson acceleration. On challenging datasets with noises and partial overlaps, we achieve similar or better accuracy than Sparse ICP while being at least an order of magnitude faster. Finally, we extend the robust formulation to point-to-plane ICP, and solve the resulting problem using a similar Anderson-accelerated MM strategy. Our robust ICP methods improve the registration accuracy on benchmark datasets while being competitive in computational time.
Tactile data and kinesthetic cues are two important sensing sources in robot object recognition and are complementary to each other. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm named Iterative Closest Labeled Point (iCLAP) to recognize objects using both tactile and kinesthetic information.The iCLAP first assigns different local tactile features with distinct label numbers. The label numbers of the tactile features together with their associated 3D positions form a 4D point cloud of the object. In this manner, the two sensing modalities are merged to form a synthesized perception of the touched object. To recognize an object, the partial 4D point cloud obtained from a number of touches iteratively matches with all the reference cloud models to identify the best fit. An extensive evaluation study with 20 real objects shows that our proposed iCLAP approach outperforms those using either of the separate sensing modalities, with a substantial recognition rate improvement of up to 18%.
In this work, we propose UPDesc, an unsupervised method to learn point descriptors for robust point cloud registration. Our work builds upon a recent supervised 3D CNN-based descriptor extraction framework, namely, 3DSmoothNet, which leverages a voxel-based representation to parameterize the surrounding geometry of interest points. Instead of using a predefined fixed-size local support in voxelization, which potentially limits the access of richer local geometry information, we propose to learn the support size in a data-driven manner. To this end, we design a differentiable voxelization module that can back-propagate gradients to the support size optimization. To optimize descriptor similarity, the prior 3D CNN work and other supervised methods require abundant correspondence labels or pose annotations of point clouds for crafting metric learning losses. Differently, we show that unsupervised learning of descriptor similarity can be achieved by performing geometric registration in networks. Our learning objectives consider descriptor similarity both across and within point clouds without supervision. Through extensive experiments on point cloud registration benchmarks, we show that our learned descriptors yield superior performance over existing unsupervised methods.
Point cloud segmentation is a fundamental task in 3D. Despite recent progress on point cloud segmentation with the power of deep networks, current deep learning methods based on the clean label assumptions may fail with noisy labels. Yet, object class labels are often mislabeled in real-world point cloud datasets. In this work, we take the lead in solving this issue by proposing a novel Point Noise-Adaptive Learning (PNAL) framework. Compared to existing noise-robust methods on image tasks, our PNAL is noise-rate blind, to cope with the spatially variant noise rate problem specific to point clouds. Specifically, we propose a novel point-wise confidence selection to obtain reliable labels based on the historical predictions of each point. A novel cluster-wise label correction is proposed with a voting strategy to generate the best possible label taking the neighbor point correlations into consideration. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of PNAL on both synthetic and real-world noisy datasets. In particular, even with $60%$ symmetric noisy labels, our proposed method produces much better results than its baseline counterpart without PNAL and is comparable to the ideal upper bound trained on a completely clean dataset. Moreover, we fully re-labeled the validation set of a popular but noisy real-world scene dataset ScanNetV2 to make it clean, for rigorous experiment and future research. We study the problem of novel view synthesis of a scene comprised of 3D objects. We propose a simple yet effective approach that is neither continuous nor implicit, challenging recent trends on view synthesis. We demonstrate that although continuous radiance field representations have gained a lot of attention due to their expressive power, our simple approach obtains comparable or even better novel view reconstruction quality comparing with state-of-the-art baselines while increasing rendering speed by over 400x. Our model is trained in a category-agnostic manner and does not require scene-specific optimization. Therefore, it is able to generalize novel view synthesis to object categories not seen during training. In addition, we show that with our simple formulation, we can use view synthesis as a self-supervision signal for efficient learning of 3D geometry without explicit 3D supervision.
We present a text-based tool for editing talking-head video that enables an iterative editing workflow. On each iteration users can edit the wording of the speech, further refine mouth motions if necessary to reduce artifacts and manipulate non-verbal aspects of the performance by inserting mouth gestures (e.g. a smile) or changing the overall performance style (e.g. energetic, mumble). Our tool requires only 2-3 minutes of the target actor video and it synthesizes the video for each iteration in about 40 seconds, allowing users to quickly explore many editing possibilities as they iterate. Our approach is based on two key ideas. (1) We develop a fast phoneme search algorithm that can quickly identify phoneme-level subsequences of the source repository video that best match a desired edit. This enables our fast iteration loop. (2) We leverage a large repository of video of a source actor and develop a new self-supervised neural retargeting technique for transferring the mouth motions of the source actor to the target actor. This allows us to work with relatively short target actor videos, making our approach applicable in many real-world editing scenarios. Finally, our refinement and performance controls give users the ability to further fine-tune the synthesized results.
