Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in square-planar nickelates as well as by longstanding puzzling experiments in heavy-fermion superconductors, we study Cooper pairing between correlated $d$-electrons coupled to a band of weakly-correlated electrons. We perform self-consistent large N calculations on an effective $t-J$ model for the $d$-electrons with additional hybridization. Unlike previous studies of mixed-valent systems, we focus on parameter regimes where both hybridized bands are relevant to determining the pairing symmetry. For sufficiently strong hybridization, we find a robust $s+id$ pairing which breaks time-reversal and point-group symmetries in the mixed-valent regime. Our results illustrate how intrinsically multi-band systems such as heavy-fermions can support a number of highly non-trivial pairing states. They also provide a putative microscopic realization of previous phenomenological proposals of $s+id$ pairing and suggest a potential resolution to puzzling experiments in heavy-fermion superconductors such as U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$ which exhibit two superconducting phase transitions and a full gap at lower temperatures.

We study the interlayer pairing states in layered systems of two different 2d electronic subsystems, one with relativistic linear and the other with non-relativistic parabolic spectrum. The complex order parameter of the paired state has a two component structure. We investigate the pairing state formation on the mean-field level, determine the critical interaction strength and evaluate the effective potential. The anisotropic three-band spectrum of quasiparticles depends explicitly on the phase difference of the order parameter components, rotates in momentum space as it changes. It is subject to the strong band deformation due to the pairing. It leads to the fusion and hybridization of initially decoupled bands. The quasiparticle spectrum has the shape of deformed Dirac cones in the vicinity of the two touching points between neighboring bands. The density of states exhibits a number of specific features due to band deformation, such as a van Hove singularity.
Observation of robust superconductivity in some of the iron based superconductors in the vicinity of a Lifshitz point where a spin density wave instability is suppressed as the {hole} band drops below the Fermi energy raise questions for spin-fluctuation theories. Here we discuss spin-fluctuation pairing for a bilayer Hubbard model, which goes through such a Lifshitz transition. We find s$_pm$ pairing with a transition temperature that peaks beyond the Lifshitz point and a gap function that has essentially the same magnitude but opposite sign on the incipient hole band as it does on the electron band that has a Fermi surface.
We report specific heat capacity measurements on a LiFeAs single crystal at temperatures down to 400 mK and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. A small specific heat jump at Tc and finite residual density of states at T=0 K in the superconducting (SC) state indicate that there are strong unitary scatterers that lead to states within the SC gap. A sub-linear magnetic field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma(H) at T=0 K is equally well fitted by both a nodal d-wave gap as well as a sign changing multiband pm s-wave gap. When impurity effects are taken into account, however, the linear temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C_{el}/T at low temperatures argues against a nodal d-wave superconducting gap. We conclude that the SC state of LiFeAs is most compatible with the multiband pm s-wave SC state with the gap values Delta_{small}=0.46 Delta_{large}.
We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br with the tunneling direction parallel to the layered structure.
Motivated by recent proposals of correlation induced insensitivity of d-wave superconductors to impurities, we develop a simple pairing theory for these systems for up to a moderate strength of disorder. Our description implements the key ideas of Anderson, originally proposed for disordered s-wave superconductors, but in addition takes care of the inherent strong electronic repulsion in these compounds, as well as disorder induced inhomogeneities. We first obtain the self-consistent one-particle states, that capture the effects of disorder exactly, and strong correlations using Gutzwiller approximation. These `normal states, representing the interplay of strong correlations and disorder, when coupled through pairing attractions following the path of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS), produce results nearly identical to those from a more sophisticated Gutzwiller augmented Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis.
