We propose a framework for tightly-coupled lidar inertial odometry via smoothing and mapping, LIO-SAM, that achieves highly accurate, real-time mobile robot trajectory estimation and map-building. LIO-SAM formulates lidar-inertial odometry atop a factor graph, allowing a multitude of relative and absolute measurements, including loop closures, to be incorporated from different sources as factors into the system. The estimated motion from inertial measurement unit (IMU) pre-integration de-skews point clouds and produces an initial guess for lidar odometry optimization. The obtained lidar odometry solution is used to estimate the bias of the IMU. To ensure high performance in real-time, we marginalize old lidar scans for pose optimization, rather than matching lidar scans to a global map. Scan-matching at a local scale instead of a global scale significantly improves the real-time performance of the system, as does the selective introduction of keyframes, and an efficient sliding window approach that registers a new keyframe to a fixed-size set of prior ``sub-keyframes. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on datasets gathered from three platforms over various scales and environments.
We propose a framework for tightly-coupled lidar-visual-inertial odometry via smoothing and mapping, LVI-SAM, that achieves real-time state estimation and map-building with high accuracy and robustness. LVI-SAM is built atop a factor graph and is composed of two sub-systems: a visual-inertial system (VIS) and a lidar-inertial system (LIS). The two sub-systems are designed in a tightly-coupled manner, in which the VIS leverages LIS estimation to facilitate initialization. The accuracy of the VIS is improved by extracting depth information for visual features using lidar measurements. In turn, the LIS utilizes VIS estimation for initial guesses to support scan-matching. Loop closures are first identified by the VIS and further refined by the LIS. LVI-SAM can also function when one of the two sub-systems fails, which increases its robustness in both texture-less and feature-less environments. LVI-SAM is extensively evaluated on datasets gathered from several platforms over a variety of scales and environments. Our implementation is available at https://git.io/lvi-sam
Ego-motion estimation is a fundamental requirement for most mobile robotic applications. By sensor fusion, we can compensate the deficiencies of stand-alone sensors and provide more reliable estimations. We introduce a tightly coupled lidar-IMU fusion method in this paper. By jointly minimizing the cost derived from lidar and IMU measurements, the lidar-IMU odometry (LIO) can perform well with acceptable drift after long-term experiment, even in challenging cases where the lidar measurements can be degraded. Besides, to obtain more reliable estimations of the lidar poses, a rotation-constrained refinement algorithm (LIO-mapping) is proposed to further align the lidar poses with the global map. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method can estimate the poses of the sensor pair at the IMU update rate with high precision, even under fast motion conditions or with insufficient features.
In this letter we investigate a tightly coupled Lidar-Inertia Odometry and Mapping (LIOM) scheme, with the capability to incorporate multiple lidars with complementary field of view (FOV). In essence, we devise a time-synchronized scheme to combine extracted features from separate lidars into a single pointcloud, which is then used to construct a local map and compute the feature-map matching (FMM) coefficients. These coefficients, along with the IMU preinteration observations, are then used to construct a factor graph that will be optimized to produce an estimate of the sliding window trajectory. We also propose a key frame-based map management strategy to marginalize certain poses and pointclouds in the sliding window to grow a global map, which is used to assemble the local map in the later stage. The use of multiple lidars with complementary FOV and the global map ensures that our estimate has low drift and can sustain good localization in situations where single lidar use gives poor result, or even fails to work. Multi-thread computation implementations are also adopted to fractionally cut down the computation time and ensure real-time performance. We demonstrate the efficacy of our system via a series of experiments on public datasets collected from an aerial vehicle.
We present an efficient multi-sensor odometry system for mobile platforms that jointly optimizes visual, lidar, and inertial information within a single integrated factor graph. This runs in real-time at full framerate using fixed lag smoothing. To perform such tight integration, a new method to extract 3D line and planar primitives from lidar point clouds is presented. This approach overcomes the suboptimality of typical frame-to-frame tracking methods by treating the primitives as landmarks and tracking them over multiple scans. True integration of lidar features with standard visual features and IMU is made possible using a subtle passive synchronization of lidar and camera frames. The lightweight formulation of the 3D features allows for real-time execution on a single CPU. Our proposed system has been tested on a variety of platforms and scenarios, including underground exploration with a legged robot and outdoor scanning with a dynamically moving handheld device, for a total duration of 96 min and 2.4 km traveled distance. In these test sequences, using only one exteroceptive sensor leads to failure due to either underconstrained geometry (affecting lidar) or textureless areas caused by aggressive lighting changes (affecting vision). In these conditions, our factor graph naturally uses the best information available from each sensor modality without any hard switches.
In this paper, we present INertial Lidar Localisation Autocalibration And MApping (IN2LAAMA): an offline probabilistic framework for localisation, mapping, and extrinsic calibration based on a 3D-lidar and a 6-DoF-IMU. Most of todays lidars collect geometric information about the surrounding environment by sweeping lasers across their field of view. Consequently, 3D-points in one lidar scan are acquired at different timestamps. If the sensor trajectory is not accurately known, the scans are affected by the phenomenon known as motion distortion. The proposed method leverages preintegration with a continuous representation of the inertial measurements to characterise the systems motion at any point in time. It enables precise correction of the motion distortion without relying on any explicit motion model. The systems pose, velocity, biases, and time-shift are estimated via a full batch optimisation that includes automatically generated loop-closure constraints. The autocalibration and the registration of lidar data rely on planar and edge features matched across pairs of scans. The performance of the framework is validated through simulated and real-data experiments.
