Flux ladders constitute the minimal setup enabling a systematic understanding of the rich physics of interacting particles subjected simultaneously to strong magnetic fields and a lattice potential. In this paper, the ground-state phase diagram of a flux-ladder model is mapped out using extensive density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. The emphasis is put on parameters which can be experimentally realized exploiting the internal states of potassium atoms as a synthetic dimension. The focus is on accessible observables such as the chiral current and the leg-population imbalance. Considering a particle filling of one boson per rung, we report the existence of a Mott-insulating Meissner phase as well as biased-ladder phases on top of superfluids and Mott insulators. Furthermore, we demonstrate that quantum quenches from suitably chosen initial states can be used to probe the equilibrium properties in the transient dynamics. Concretely, we consider the instantaneous turning on of hopping matrix elements along the rungs or legs in the synthetic flux-ladder model, with different initial particle distributions. We show that clear signatures of the biased-ladder phase can be observed in the transient dynamics. Moreover, the behavior of the chiral current in the transient dynamics is discussed. The results presented in this paper provide guidelines for future implementations of flux ladders in experimental setups exploiting a synthetic dimension.

The combination of interactions and static gauge fields plays a pivotal role in our understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter. Cold atomic gases endowed with a synthetic dimension are emerging as an ideal platform to experimentally address this interplay in quasi-one-dimensional systems. A fundamental question is whether these setups can give access to pristine two-dimensional phenomena, such as the fractional quantum Hall effect, and how. We show that unambiguous signatures of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin-like states can be observed and characterized in synthetic ladders. We theoretically diagnose these Laughlin-like states focusing on the chiral current flowing in the ladder, on the central charge of the low-energy theory, and on the properties of the entanglement entropy. Remarkably, Laughlin-like states are separated from conventional liquids by Lifschitz-type transitions, characterized by sharp discontinuities in the current profiles, which we address using extensive simulations based on matrix-product states. Our work provides a qualitative and quantitative guideline towards the observability and understanding of strongly-correlated states of matter in synthetic ladders. In particular, we unveil how state-of-the-art experimental settings constitute an ideal starting point to progressively tackle two-dimensional strongly interacting systems from a ladder viewpoint, opening a new perspective for the observation of non-Abelian states of matter.
The notion of topological phases extended to dynamical systems stimulates extensive studies, of which the characterization of non-equilibrium topological invariants is a central issue and usually necessitates the information of quantum dynamics in both the time and spatial dimensions. Here we combine the recently developed concepts of the dynamical classification of topological phases and synthetic dimension, and propose to efficiently characterize photonic topological phases via holographic quench dynamics. A pseudo spin model is constructed with ring resonators in a synthetic lattice formed by frequencies of light, and the quench dynamics is induced by initializing a trivial state which evolves under a topological Hamiltonian. Our key prediction is that the complete topological information of the Hamiltonian is extracted from quench dynamics solely in the time domain, manifesting holographic features of the dynamics. In particular, two fundamental time scales emerge in the quench dynamics, with one mimicking the Bloch momenta of the topological band and the other characterizing the residue time evolution of the state after quench. For this a dynamical bulk-surface correspondence is obtained in time dimension and characterizes the topology of the spin model. This work also shows that the photonic synthetic frequency dimension provides an efficient and powerful way to explore the topological non-equilibrium dynamics.

A boson two--leg ladder in the presence of a synthetic magnetic flux is investigated by means of bosonization techniques and Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). We follow the quantum phase transition from the commensurate Meissner to the incommensurate vortex phase with increasing flux at different fillings. When the applied flux is $rho pi$ and close to it, where $rho$ is the filling per rung, we find a second incommensuration in the vortex state that affects physical observables such as the momentum distribution, the rung-rung correlation function and the spin-spin and charge-charge static structure factors.
We unravel the ground state properties and the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two bosonic impurities immersed in an one-dimensional fermionic environment by applying a quench of the impurity-medium interaction strength. In the ground state, the impurities and the Fermi sea are phase-separated for strong impurity-medium repulsions while they experience a localization tendency around the trap center for large attractions. We demonstrate the presence of attractive induced interactions mediated by the host for impurity-medium couplings of either sign and analyze the competition between induced and direct interactions. Following a quench to repulsive interactions triggers a breathing motion in both components, with an interaction dependent frequency and amplitude for the impurities, and a dynamical phase-separation between the impurities and their surrounding for strong repulsions. For attractive post-quench couplings a beating pattern owing its existence to the dominant role of induced interactions takes place with both components showing a localization trend around the trap center. In both quench scenarios, attractive induced correlations are manifested between non-interacting impurities and are found to dominate the direct ones only for quenches to attractive couplings.
Recently it has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated that a spin-orbit coupled multi-component gas in 1d lattice can be viewed as spinless gas in a synthetic 2d lattice with a magnetic flux. In this letter we consider interaction effect of such a Fermi gas, and propose signatures in charge pumping experiment, which can be easily realized in this setting. Using 1/3 filling of the lowest 2d band as an example, in strongly interacting regime, we show that the charge pumping value gradually approaches a universal fractional value for large spin component and low filling of 1d lattice, indicating a fractional quantum Hall type behavior; while the charge pumping value is zero if the 1d lattice filling is commensurate, indicating a Mott insulator behavior. The charge-density-wave order is also discussed.
