Incorporating prior structure information into the visual state estimation could generally improve the localization performance. In this letter, we aim to address the paradox between accuracy and efficiency in coupling visual factors with structure constraints. To this end, we present a cross-modality method that tracks a camera in a prior map modelled by the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). With the pose estimated by the front-end initially, the local visual observations and map components are associated efficiently, and the visual structure from the triangulation is refined simultaneously. By introducing the hybrid structure factors into the joint optimization, the camera poses are bundle-adjusted with the local visual structure. By evaluating our complete system, namely GMMLoc, on the public dataset, we show how our system can provide a centimeter-level localization accuracy with only trivial computational overhead. In addition, the comparative studies with the state-of-the-art vision-dominant state estimators demonstrate the competitive performance of our method.
Visual Localization is an essential component in autonomous navigation. Existing approaches are either based on the visual structure from SLAM/SfM or the geometric structure from dense mapping. To take the advantages of both, in this work, we present a complete visual inertial localization system based on a hybrid map representation to reduce the computational cost and increase the positioning accuracy. Specially, we propose two modules for data association and batch optimization, respectively. To this end, we develop an efficient data association module to associate map components with local features, which takes only $2$ms to generate temporal landmarks. For batch optimization, instead of using visual factors, we develop a module to estimate a pose prior from the instant localization results to constrain poses. The experimental results on the EuRoC MAV dataset demonstrate a competitive performance compared to the state of the arts. Specially, our system achieves an average position error in 1.7 cm with 100% recall. The timings show that the proposed modules reduce the computational cost by 20-30%. The growing popularity of autonomous systems creates a need for reliable and efficient metric pose retrieval algorithms. Currently used approaches tend to rely on nearest neighbor search of binary descriptors to perform the 2D-3D matching and guarantee realtime capabilities on mobile platforms. These methods struggle, however, with the growing size of the map, changes in viewpoint or appearance, and visual aliasing present in the environment. The rigidly defined descriptor patterns only capture a limited neighborhood of the keypoint and completely ignore the overall visual context. We propose LandmarkBoost - an approach that, in contrast to the conventional 2D-3D matching methods, casts the search problem as a landmark classification task. We use a boosted classifier to classify landmark observations and directly obtain correspondences as classifier scores. We also introduce a formulation of visual context that is flexible, efficient to compute, and can capture relationships in the entire image plane. The original binary descriptors are augmented with contextual information and informative features are selected by the boosting framework. Through detailed experiments, we evaluate the retrieval quality and performance of LandmarkBoost, demonstrating that it outperforms common state-of-the-art descriptor matching methods.
Dynamic objects in the environment, such as people and other agents, lead to challenges for existing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches. To deal with dynamic environments, computer vision researchers usually apply some learning-based object detectors to remove these dynamic objects. However, these object detectors are computationally too expensive for mobile robot on-board processing. In practical applications, these objects output noisy sounds that can be effectively detected by on-board sound source localization. The directional information of the sound source object can be efficiently obtained by direction of sound arrival (DoA) estimation, but depth estimation is difficult. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel audio-visual fusion approach that fuses sound source direction into the RGB-D image and thus removes the effect of dynamic obstacles on the multi-robot SLAM system. Experimental results of multi-robot SLAM in different dynamic environments show that the proposed method uses very small computational resources to obtain very stable self-localization results.
Particle filtering is a powerful approach to sequential state estimation and finds application in many domains, including robot localization, object tracking, etc. To apply particle filtering in practice, a critical challenge is to construct probabilistic system models, especially for systems with complex dynamics or rich sensory inputs such as camera images. This paper introduces the Particle Filter Network (PFnet), which encodes both a system model and a particle filter algorithm in a single neural network. The PF-net is fully differentiable and trained end-to-end from data. Instead of learning a generic system model, it learns a model optimized for the particle filter algorithm. We apply the PF-net to a visual localization task, in which a robot must localize in a rich 3-D world, using only a schematic 2-D floor map. In simulation experiments, PF-net consistently outperforms alternative learning architectures, as well as a traditional model-based method, under a variety of sensor inputs. Further, PF-net generalizes well to new, unseen environments.
Cooperative localization is fundamental to autonomous multirobot systems, but most algorithms couple inter-robot communication with observation, making these algorithms susceptible to failures in both communication and observation steps. To enhance the resilience of multirobot cooperative localization algorithms in a distributed system, we use covariance intersection to formalize a localization algorithm with an explicit communication update and ensure estimation consistency at the same time. We investigate the covariance boundedness criterion of our algorithm with respect to communication and observation graphs, demonstrating provable localization performance under even sparse communications topologies. We substantiate the resilience of our algorithm as well as the boundedness analysis through experiments on simulated and benchmark physical data against varying communications connectivity and failure metrics. Especially when inter-robot communication is entirely blocked or partially unavailable, we demonstrate that our method is less affected and maintains desired performance compared to existing cooperative localization algorithms.
