We consider two parallel-in-time approaches applied to a (reaction) diffusion problem, possibly non-linear. In particular, we consider PFASST (Parallel Full Approximation Scheme in Space and Time) and space-time multilevel strategies. For both approaches, we start from an integral formulation of the continuous time-dependent problem. Then, a collocation form for PFASST and a discontinuous Galerkin discretization in time for the space-time multigrid are employed, resulting in the same discrete solution at the time nodes. Strong and weak scaling of both multilevel strategies is compared for varying order of the temporal discretization. Moreover, we investigate the respective convergence behavior for non-linear problems and highlight quantitative differences.

The parallel full approximation scheme in space and time (PFASST) introduced by Emmett and Minion in 2012 is an iterative strategy for the temporal parallelization of ODEs and discretized PDEs. As the name suggests, PFASST is similar in spirit to a space-time FAS multigrid method performed over multiple time-steps in parallel. However, since the original focus of PFASST has been on the performance of the method in terms of time parallelism, the solution of any spatial system arising from the use of implicit or semi-implicit temporal methods within PFASST have simply been assumed to be solved to some desired accuracy completely at each sub-step and each iteration by some unspecified procedure. It hence is natural to investigate how iterative solvers in the spatial dimensions can be interwoven with the PFASST iterations and whether this strategy leads to a more efficient overall approach. This paper presents an initial investigation on the relative performance of different strategies for coupling PFASST iterations with multigrid methods for the implicit treatment of diffusion terms in PDEs. In particular, we compare full accuracy multigrid solves at each sub-step with a small fixed number of multigrid V-cycles. This reduces the cost of each PFASST iteration at the possible expense of a corresponding increase in the number of PFASST iterations needed for convergence. Parallel efficiency of the resulting methods is explored through numerical examples.
This paper introduces an ultra-weak space-time DPG method for the heat equation. We prove well-posedness of the variational formulation with broken test functions and verify quasi-optimality of a practical DPG scheme. Numerical experiments visualize beneficial properties of an adaptive and parabolically scaled mesh-refinement driven by the built-in error control of the DPG method.
We present a parallel computing strategy for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) nested geometric multigrid (GMG) solver. Parallel GMG solvers require a combination of coarse-grain and fine-grain parallelism to improve time to solution performance. In this work we focus on fine-grain parallelism. We use Intels second generation Xeon Phi (Knights Landing) many-core processor. The GMG method achieves ideal convergence rates of $0.2$ or less, for high polynomial orders. A matrix free (assembly free) technique is exploited to save considerable memory usage and increase arithmetic intensity. HDG enables static condensation, and due to the discontinuous nature of the discretization, we developed a matrix vector multiply routine that does not require any costly synchronizations or barriers. Our algorithm is able to attain 80% of peak bandwidth performance for higher order polynomials. This is possible due to the data locality inherent in the HDG method. Very high performance is realized for high order schemes, due to good arithmetic intensity, which declines as the order is reduced.

In this article, using the weighted discrete least-squares, we propose a patch reconstruction finite element space with only one degree of freedom per element. As the approximation space, it is applied to the discontinuous Galerkin methods with the upwind scheme for the steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems over polytopic meshes. The optimal error estimates are provided in both diffusion-dominated and convection-dominated regimes. Furthermore, several numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical error estimates, and to well approximate boundary layers and/or internal layers.

In this paper, a second-order backward difference formula (abbr. BDF2) is used to approximate first-order time partial derivative, the Riesz fractional derivatives are approximated by fourth-order compact operators, a class of new alternating-direction implicit difference scheme (abbr. ADI) is constructed for two-dimensional Riesz space fractional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. Stability and convergence of the numerical method are analyzed. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.
