In this paper a new observer is introduced to estimate the Crystal Size Distribution (CSD) only from the measurements of the solute concentration, temperature and a model of the growth rate. No model of the nucleation rate is needed. This approach is based on the use of a Kazantzis-Kravaris/Luenberger observer which exponentially estimates functionals of the CSD. Then, the full state is estimated by means of a Tikhonov regularization procedure. Numerical simulations are provided. Our approach relies on an infinite-dimensional observer, contrarily to the usual moment based observers.

This paper studies the internal stability and string stability of a vehicle platooning of constant time headway spacing policy with a varying-speed leader using a multiple-predecessor-following strategy via vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Unlike the common case in which the leaders speed is constant and different kinds of Proportional-Integral-Derivative controllers are implemented, in this case, the fact that the leader has a time-varying speed necessitates the design of an observer. First, in order to estimate its position, speed and acceleration error with respect to the leader, each follower designs an observer. The observer is designed by means of constructing an observer matrix whose parameters should be determined. We simplifies the design of the matrix of the observer in such a way that the design boils down to choosing a scalar value. The resulting observer turns out to have a third order integrator dynamics, which provides an advantage of simplifying the controller structure and, hence, derive conditions for string stability using a frequency response method. A new heuristic searching algorithm is developed to deduce the controller parameter conditions, given a fixed time headway, for string stability. Additionally, a bisection-like algorithm is incorporated into the above algorithm to obtain the minimum (with some deviation tolerance) available value of the time headway by fixing one controller parameter. The effectiveness of the internal and string stabilities of the proposed observer-based controller is demonstrated via comparison examples.

In this paper, we are interested in the estimation of Particle Size Distributions (PSDs) during a batch crystallization process in which particles of two different shapes coexist and evolve simultaneously. The PSDs are estimated thanks to a measurement of an apparent Chord Length Distribution (CLD), a measure that we model for crystals of spheroidal shape. Our main result is to prove the approximate observability of the infinite-dimensional system in any positive time. Under this observability condition, we are able to apply a Back and Forth Nudging (BFN) algorithm to reconstruct the PSD.
In this paper we give a geometrical framework for the design of observers on finite-dimensional Lie groups for systems which possess some specific symmetries. The design and the error (between true and estimated state) equation are explicit and intrinsic. We consider also a particular case: left-invariant systems on Lie groups with right equivariant output. The theory yields a class of observers such that error equation is autonomous. The observers converge locally around any trajectory, and the global behavior is independent from the trajectory, which reminds of the linear stationary case.
This paper presents a scheme for dual robust control of batch processes under parametric uncertainty. The dual-control paradigm arises in the context of adaptive control. A trade-off should be decided between the control actions that (robustly) optimize the plant performance and between those that excite the plant such that unknown plant model parameters can be learned precisely enough to increase the robust performance of the plant. Some recently proposed approaches can be used to tackle this problem, however, this will be done at the price of conservativeness or significant computational burden. In order to increase computational efficiency, we propose a scheme that uses parameterized conditions of optimality in the adaptive predictive-control fashion. The dual features of the controller are incorporated through scenario-based (multi-stage) approach, which allows for modeling of the adaptive robust decision problem and for projecting this decision into predictions of the controller. The proposed approach is illustrated on a case study from batch membrane filtration.
Observer design typically requires the observability of the underlying system, which may be hard to verify for nonlinear systems, while guaranteeing asymptotic convergence of errors, which may be insufficient in order to satisfy performance conditions in finite time. This paper develops a method to design Luenberger-type observers for nonlinear systems which guarantee the largest possible domain of attraction for the state estimation error regardless of the initialization of the system. The observer design procedure is posed as a two step problem. In the the first step, the error dynamics are abstractly represented as a linear equation on the space of Radon measures. Thereafter, the problem of identifying the largest set of initial errors that can be driven to within the user-specified error target set in finite-time for all possible initial states, and the corresponding observer gains, is formulated as an infinite-dimensional linear program on measures. This optimization problem is solved, using Lasserres relaxations via a sequence of semidefinite programs with vanishing conservatism. By post-processing the solution of step one, the set of gains that maximize the size of tolerable initial errors is identified in step two. To demonstrate the feasibility of the presented approach two examples are presented.
