We present an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model defined on a pentacoordinated three-dimensional graphite lattice, which realizes a novel quantum spin liquid with second-order topology. The exact solutions are described by Majorana fermions coupled to a background $mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field, whose ground-state flux configuration gives rise to an emergent off-centered spacetime inversion symmetry. The symmetry protects topologically nontrivial band structures for the Majorana fermions, particularly including nodal-line semimetal phases with twofold topological charges: the second Stiefel-Whitney number and the quantized Berry phase. The former leads to rich topological phenomena on the system boundaries. There are two nodal-line semimetal phases hosting hinge Fermi arcs located on different hinges, and they are separated by a critical Dirac semimetal state with surface helical Fermi arcs. In addition, we show that rich symmetry/topology can be explored in our model by simply varying the lattice or interaction arrangement. As an example, we discuss how to achieve a topological gapped phase with surface Dirac points.

We present detailed results from a recent microscopic theory of extremely correlated Fermi liquids, applied to the t-J model in two dimensions. We use typical sets of band parameters relevant to the cuprate superconductors. The second order theory in the parameter lambda is argued to be quantitatively valid in the overdoped regime for 0 < n < 0.75 (n is the particle density). The calculation involves the self consistent solution of equations for an auxiliary Fermi liquid type Greens function and an adaptive spectral weight, or caparison factor, described in recent papers by Shastry (Refs. (1) and (5)). We present the numerical results at low as well as high T at various low to intermediate densities in the normal phase with emphasis placed on features that are experimentally accessible. We display the momentum space occupation function m(k), various energy dispersions locating the peaks of spectral functions, the optical conductivity, relaxation rates for quasiparticles, and the electronic spectral functions along various directions in the Brillouin zone, and with typical additional elastic scattering. The line-shapes have an asymmetric shape and a broad background that is seen in experiments near and beyond optimal hole doping, and validate approximate recent rece
We consider fermionic states bound on domain walls in a Weyl superfluid $^3$He-A and on interfaces between $^3$He-A and a fully gapped topological superfluid $^3$He-B. We demonstrate that in both cases fermionic spectrum contains Fermi arcs which are continuous nodal lines of energy spectrum terminating at the projections of two Weyl points to the plane of surface states in momentum space. The number of Fermi arcs is determined by the index theorem which relates bulk values of topological invariant to the number of zero energy surface states. The index theorem is consistent with an exact spectrum of Bogolubov- de Gennes equation obtained numerically meanwhile the quasiclassical approximation fails to reproduce the correct number of zero modes. Thus we demonstrate that topology describes the properties of exact spectrum beyond quasiclassical approximation.
The S=3/2 Kitaev honeycomb model (KHM) has defied an analytical as well as numerical understanding because it is not exactly soluble like its S=1/2 brethren and in contrast to other spin-S Kitaev models numerical methods are plagued by a massive pile up of low energy states. Here, we uncover the phase diagram of the S=3/2 KHM and find gapped and gapless quantum spin liquids (QSLs) generally coexisting with spin quadrupolar orders. Employing an SO(6) Majorana fermion representation of spin-3/2s, we find an exact representation of the conserved plaquette fluxes in terms of static Z$_2$ gauge fields akin to the S=1/2 KHM which enables us to treat the remaining interacting matter fermion sector in a parton mean-field theory. The latter provides an explanation for the extensive near degeneracy of low energy states in the gapless phase via the appearance of almost flat Majorana bands close to zero energy. Our parton description is in remarkable quantitative agreement with numerical simulations using the density matrix renormalization group method, and is furthermore corroborated by the addition of a single ion anisotropy which continuously connects the gapless Dirac QSL of our model with that of the S=1/2 KHM. We discuss the implications of our findings for materials realization of higher S=3/2 KHMs and the stability of the QSL phase with respect to additional interactions.
We construct a topological spin liquid (TSL) model on the kagome lattice, with SU(3) symmetry with the fundamental representation at each lattice site, based on Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Using the PEPS framework, we can adiabatically connect the model to a fixed point model (analogous to the dimer model for Resonating Valence Bond states) which we prove to be locally equivalent to a $Z_3$ quantum double model. Numerical study of the interpolation reveals no sign of a phase transition or long-range order, characterizing the model conclusively as a gapped TSL. We further study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that while it is gapped, it exhibits branches with vastly different velocities, with the slow branch matching the counting of a chiral $SU(3)_1$ CFT, suggesting that it can be deformed to a model with chiral $SU(3)_1$ entanglement spectrum.
In this work we study the possible occurrence of topological insulators for 2D fermions of high spin. They can be realized in cold fermion systems with ground-state atomic spin $F>tfrac{1}{2}$, if the optical potential is properly designed, and spin-orbit coupling is relevant. The latter is shown to be induced by letting the fermions interact with a specially tuned arrangement of polarized laser beams. When the system is subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, time reversal symmetry is broken but the ensuing Hamiltonian is still endowed with a mirror symmetry. Topological insulators for fermions of higher spins are fundamentally distinct from those pertaining to spin $frac{1}{2}$. The underlying physics reveals a plethora of positive and negative mirror Chern numbers, respectively corresponding to chiral and anti-chiral edge states. Here, for simplicity, we concentrate on the case $F=tfrac{3}{2}$ (which is suitable for $^{6}$Li or $^2$H atoms) but extension to higher spins (such as $^{40}$K whose ground-state spin is $F=tfrac{9}{2}$), is straightforward.
