Despite the virtues of Jones and Mueller formalisms for the representation of the polarimetric properties, for some purposes in both Optics and SAR Polarimetry, the concept of coherency vector associated with a nondepolarizing medium has proven to be an useful mathematical structure that inherits certain symmetries underlying the nature of linear polarimetric transformations of the states of polarization of light caused by its interaction with material media. While the Jones and Mueller matrices of a serial combination of devices are given by the respective conventional matrix products, the composition of coherency vectors of such serial combinations requires a specific and unconventional mathematical rule. In this work, a vector product of coherency vectors is presented that satisfies, in a meaningful and consistent manner, the indicated requirements. As a result, a new algebraic formalism is built where the representation of polarization states of electromagnetic waves through Stokes vectors is preserved, while nondepolarizing media are represented by coherency vectors and general media are represented by coherency matrices generated by partially coherent compositions of the coherency vectors of the components.

The two-point complex coherence function constitutes a complete representation for scalar quasi-monochromatic optical fields. Exploiting dynamically reconfigurable slits implemented with a digital micromirror device, we report on measurements of the complex two-point coherence function for partially coherent light scattering from a `scene comprising one or two objects at different transverse and axial positions with respect to the source. Although the intensity shows no discernible shadows in absence of a lens, numerically back-propagating the measured complex coherence function allows estimating the objects sizes and locations -- and thus the reconstruction of the scene.

We consider coupled waveguide lattices as an architecture that implement a wide range of multiport transformations. In this architecture, a particular transfer matrix is obtained through setting the step-wise profiles of the propagation constants seen by the field evolving in the lattice. To investigate the transformation capabilities, the implementation of a set of transfer matrices taken at random and particular cases of discrete Fourier transform, Hadamard and permutation matrices have been described. Because the waveguide lattices schemes are more compact than their traditional lumped-parameter counterparts, our architecture may be beneficial for using in photonic information processing systems of the future.
Temporal interfaces introduced by abrupt switching of the constitutive parameters of unbounded media enable unusual wave phenomena. So far, their explorations have been mostly limited to lossless media. Yet, non-Hermitian phenomena leveraging material loss and gain, and their balanced combination in parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems, have been opening new vistas in photonics. Here, we unveil the role that temporal interfaces offer in non-Hermitian physics, introducing the dual of PT symmetry for temporal boundaries. Our findings reveal unexplored interference mechanisms enabling extreme energy manipulation, and open new scenarios for time-switched metamaterials, connecting them with the broad opportunities offered by non-Hermitian phenomena.

An analysis of the matrix models representing the polarimetric properties of light and material media is carried out by using the concept of the coherency matrix, which leads to the identification and definition of their corresponding physical quantities. For light, cases of homogeneous and inhomogeneous wavefront are analyzed, and a model for 3D polarimetric purity is formulated. For linear passive material media, a general model is developed on the basis that any physically realizable linear transformation of Stokes vectors is equivalent to an ensemble average of passive, deterministic, nondepolarizing transformations. Through this framework, the relevant physical quantities, including the indices of polarimetric purity, are identified and decoupled. Some decompositions of the whole system into a set of well-defined components are considered, as well as techniques for isolating the unknown components by means of new procedures for subtracting coherency matrices. These results and methods constitute a powerful tool for analyzing and exploiting experimental and industrial polarimetry. Some particular application examples are indicated.
Birefringent materials or nanostructures that introduce phase differences between two linear polarizations underpin the operation of wave plates for polarization control of light. Here we develop metasurfaces realizing a distinct class of complex-birefringent wave plates, which combine polarization transformation with a judiciously tailored polarization-dependent phase retardance and amplitude filtering via diffraction. We prove that the presence of loss enables the mapping from any chosen generally non-orthogonal pair of polarizations to any other pair at the output. We establish an optimal theoretical design-framework based on pairwise nanoresonator structures and experimentally demonstrate unique properties of metasurfaces in the amplification of small polarization differences and polarization coupling with unconventional phase control. Furthermore, we reveal that these metasurfaces can perform arbitrary transformations of biphoton polarization-encoded quantum states, including the modification of the degree of entanglement. Thereby, such flat devices can facilitate novel types of multi-functional polarization optics for classical and quantum applications.
