I show analytically that the average of $k$ bootstrapped correlation matrices rapidly becomes positive-definite as $k$ increases, which provides a simple approach to regularize singular Pearson correlation matrices. If $n$ is the number of objects and $t$ the number of features, the averaged correlation matrix is almost surely positive-definite if $k> frac{e}{e-1}frac{n}{t}simeq 1.58frac{n}{t}$ in the limit of large $t$ and $n$. The probability of obtaining a positive-definite correlation matrix with $k$ bootstraps is also derived for finite $n$ and $t$. Finally, I demonstrate that the number of required bootstraps is always smaller than $n$. This method is particularly relevant in fields where $n$ is orders of magnitude larger than the size of data points $t$, e.g., in finance, genetics, social science, or image processing.

We present the analytical singular value decomposition of the stoichiometry matrix for a spatially discrete reaction-diffusion system on a one dimensional domain. The domain has two subregions which share a single common boundary. Each of the subregions is further partitioned into a finite number of compartments. Chemical reactions can occur within a compartment, whereas diffusion is represented as movement between adjacent compartments. Inspired by biology, we study both 1) the case where the reactions on each side of the boundary are different and only certain species diffuse across the boundary as well as 2) the case with spatially homogenous reactions and diffusion. We write the stoichiometry matrix for these two classes of systems using a Kronecker product formulation. For the first scenario, we apply linear perturbation theory to derive an approximate singular value decomposition in the limit as diffusion becomes much faster than reactions. For the second scenario, we derive an exact analytical singular value decomposition for all relative diffusion and reaction time scales. By writing the stoichiometry matrix using Kronecker products, we show that the singular vectors and values can also be written concisely using Kronecker products. Ultimately, we find that the singular value decomposition of the reaction-diffusion stoichiometry matrix depends on the singular value decompositions of smaller matrices. These smaller matrices represent modifie
We introduce a novel covariance estimator that exploits the heteroscedastic nature of financial time series by employing exponential weighted moving averages and shrinking the in-sample eigenvalues through cross-validation. Our estimator is model-agnostic in that we make no assumptions on the distribution of the random entries of the matrix or structure of the covariance matrix. Additionally, we show how Random Matrix Theory can provide guidance for automatic tuning of the hyperparameter which characterizes the time scale for the dynamics of the estimator. By attenuating the noise from both the cross-sectional and time-series dimensions, we empirically demonstrate the superiority of our estimator over competing estimators that are based on exponentially-weighted and uniformly-weighted covariance matrices.
We consider the joint distribution of real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of random matrices with independent entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove the convergence of this distribution to the uniform distribution on the unit disc without assumptions on the existence of a density for the distribution of entries. We assume that the entries have a finite moment of order larger than two and consider the case of sparse matrices. The results are based on previous work of Bai, Rudelson and the authors extending those results to a larger class of sparse matrices.
For $alpha > 0$ we consider the operator $K_alpha colon ell^2 to ell^2$ corresponding to the matrix [left(frac{(nm)^{-frac{1}{2}+alpha}}{[max(n,m)]^{2alpha}}right)_{n,m=1}^infty.] By interpreting $K_alpha$ as the inverse of an unbounded Jacobi matrix, we show that the absolutely continuous spectrum coincides with $[0, 2/alpha]$ (multiplicity one), and that there is no singular continuous spectrum. There is a finite number of eigenvalues above the continuous spectrum. We apply our results to demonstrate that the reproducing kernel thesis does not hold for composition operators on the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $mathscr{H}^2$.
Lag windows are commonly used in time series, econometrics, steady-state simulation, and Markov chain Monte Carlo to estimate time-average covariance matrices. In the presence of positive correlation of the underlying process, estimators of this matrix almost always exhibit significant negative bias, leading to undesirable finite-sample properties. We propose a new family of lag windows specifically designed to improve finite-sample performance by offsetting this negative bias. Any existing lag window can be adapted into a lugsail equivalent with no additional assumptions. We use these lag windows within spectral variance estimators and demonstrate its advantages in a linear regression model with autocorrelated and heteroskedastic residuals. We further employ the lugsail lag windows in weighted batch means estimators due to their computational efficiency on large simulation output. We obtain bias and variance results for these multivariate estimators and significantly weaken the mixing condition on the process. Superior finite-sample properties are illustrated in a vector autoregressive process and a Bayesian logistic regression model.
