Significant efforts have focused on the magnetic excitations of relativistic Mott insulators, predicted to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). This exactly solvable model involves a highly entangled state resulting from bond-dependent Ising interactions that produce excitations which are non-local in terms of spin flips. A key challenge in real materials is identifying the relative size of the non-Kitaev terms and their role in the emergence or suppression of fractional excitations. Here, we identify the energy and temperature boundaries of non-Kitaev interactions by direct comparison of the Raman susceptibility of RuCl3 with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the Kitaev QSLs. Moreover, we further confirm the fractional nature of the magnetic excitations, which is given by creating a pair of fermionic quasiparticles. Interestingly, this fermionic response remains valid in the non-Kitaev range. Our results and focus on the use of the Raman susceptibility provide a stringent new test for future theoretical and experimental studies of QSLs.

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have been long sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly is still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of $sim$2 meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principle calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction $K$ term and the isotropic antiferromagentic off-diagonal exchange interaction $Gamma$ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling $J$ term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with $K=-6.8$ meV and $Gamma=9.5$ meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials.
We study on transport and magnetic properties of hydrated and lithium-intercalated $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_x$RuCl$_3 cdot y$H$_2$O, for investigating the effect on mobile-carrier doping into candidate materials for a realization of a Kitaev model. From thermogravitometoric and one-dimensional electron map analyses, we find two crystal structures of this system, that is, mono-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 cdot y$H$_2$O~$(xapprox0.56, yapprox1.3)$ and bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 cdot y$H$_2$O~$(xapprox0.56, yapprox3.9)$. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a temperature hysteresis at 200-270 K, which is considered to relate with a formation of a charge order. The antiferromagnetic order at 7-13 K in pristine $alpha$-RuCl$_3$~ is successfully suppressed down to 2 K in bi-layer hydrated Li$_x$RuCl$_3 cdot y$H$_2$O, which is sensitive to not only an electronic state of Ru but also an interlayer distance between Ru-Cl planes.
Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and its Heisenberg counterpart CrCl$_3$. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure for both compounds. Significantly, only $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ features a large thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of coexistence. In the related temperature interval of $70-170$ K, we observe a hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic response in the rhombohedral compared to the monoclinic phase evidences a coupling between the crystallographic structure and low-energy magnetic response. Our results demonstrate that the Kitaev magnetism concomitant with fractionalized excitations is susceptible to small variations of bonding geometry.
Thermodynamics of the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is studied for different directions of in-plane magnetic field using measurements of the magnetic Gruneisen parameter $Gamma_B$ and specific heat $C$. We identify two critical fields $B_c^{rm AF1}$ and $B_c^{rm AF2}$ corresponding, respectively, to a transition between two magnetically ordered states and the loss of magnetic order toward a quantum paramagnetic state. The $B_c^{AF2}$ phase boundary reveals a narrow region of magnetic fields where inverse melting of the ordered phase may occur. No additional transitions are detected above $B_c^{rm AF2}$ for any direction of the in-plane field, although a shoulder anomaly in $Gamma_B$ is observed systematically at $8-10$ T. Large field-induced entropy effects imply additional low-energy excitations at low fields and/or strongly field-dependent phonon entropies. Our results establish universal features of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ in high magnetic fields and challenge the presence of a field-induced Kitaev spin liquid in this material.
$alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has attracted enormous attention since it has been proposed as a prime candidate to study fractionalized magnetic excitations akin to Kitaevs honeycomb-lattice spin liquid. We have performed a detailed specific-heat investigation at temperatures down to $0.4$ K in applied magnetic fields up to $9$ T for fields parallel to the $ab$ plane. We find a suppression of the zero-field antiferromagnetic order, together with an increase of the low-temperature specific heat, with increasing field up to $mu_0H_capprox 6.9$ T. Above $H_c$, the magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat is strongly suppressed, implying the opening of a spin-excitation gap. Our data point toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c$; this is supported by universal scaling behavior near $H_c$. Remarkably, the data also reveal the existence of a small characteristic energy scale well below $1$~meV above which the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively. We relate the data to theoretical calculations based on a $J_1$--$K_1$--$Gamma_1$--$J_3$ honeycomb model.
