We investigate the existence and properties of a double asymptotic expansion in $1/N^{2}$ and $1/sqrt{D}$ in $mathrm{U}(N)timesmathrm{O}(D)$ invariant Hermitian multi-matrix models, where the $Ntimes N$ matrices transform in the vector representation of $mathrm{O}(D)$. The crucial point is to prove the existence of an upper bound $eta(h)$ on the maximum power $D^{1+eta(h)}$ of $D$ that can appear for the contribution at a given order $N^{2-2h}$ in the large $N$ expansion. We conjecture that $eta(h)=h$ in a large class of models. In the case of traceless Hermitian matrices with the quartic tetrahedral interaction, we are able to prove that $eta(h)leq 2h$; the sharper bound $eta(h)=h$ is proven for a complex bipartite version of the model, with no need to impose a tracelessness condition. We also prove that $eta(h)=h$ for the Hermitian model with the sextic wheel interaction, again with no need to impose a tracelessness condition.

Motivated by the BPS/CFT correspondence, we explore the similarities between the classical $beta$-deformed Hermitean matrix model and the $q$-deformed matrix models associated to 3d $mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on $D^2times_{q}S^1$ and $S_b^3$ by matching parameters of the theories. The novel results that we obtain are the correlators for the models, together with an additional result in the classical case consisting of the $W$-algebra representation of the generating function. Furthermore, we also obtain surprisingly simple expressions for the expectation values of characters which generalize previously known results.
The singular sector of zero genus case for the Hermitian random matrix model in the large N limit is analyzed. It is proved that the singular sector of the hodograph solutions for the underlying dispersionless Toda hierarchy and the singular sector of the 1-layer Benney (classical long wave equation) hierarchy are deeply connected. This property is due to the fact that the hodograph equations for both hierarchies describe the critical points of solutions of Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations E(a,a), with a=-1/2 for the dToda hierarchy and a=1/2 for the 1-layer Benney hierarchy.

We consider the matrix model of $U(N)$ refined Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ for the unknot. We derive a $q$-difference operator whose insertion in the matrix integral reproduces an infinite set of Ward identities which we interpret as $q$-Virasoro constraints. The constraints are rewritten as difference equations for the generating function of Wilson loop expectation values which we solve as a recursion for the correlators of the model. The solution is repackaged in the form of superintegrability formulas for Macdonald polynomials. Additionally, we derive an equivalent $q$-difference operator for a similar refinement of ABJ theory and show that the corresponding $q$-Virasoro constraints are equal to those of refined Chern-Simons for a gauge super-group $U(N|M)$. Our equations and solutions are manifestly symmetric under Langlands duality $qleftrightarrow t^{-1}$ which correctly reproduces 3d Seiberg duality when $q$ is a specific root of unity.
The Virasoro constraints play the important role in the study of matrix models and in understanding of the relation between matrix models and CFTs. Recently the localization calculations in supersymmetric gauge theories produced new families of matrix models and we have very limited knowledge about these matrix models. We concentrate on elliptic generalization of hermitian matrix model which corresponds to calculation of partition function on $S^3 times S^1$ for vector multiplet. We derive the $q$-Virasoro constraints for this matrix model. We also observe some interesting algebraic properties of the $q$-Virasoro algebra.
This work addresses nonperturbative effects in both matrix models and topological strings, and their relation with the large-order behavior of the 1/N expansion. We study instanton configurations in generic one-cut matrix models, obtaining explicit results for the one-instanton amplitude at both one and two loops. The holographic description of topological strings in terms of matrix models implies that our nonperturbative results also apply to topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. This yields very precise predictions for the large-order behavior of the perturbative genus expansion, both in conventional matrix models and in topological string theory. We test these predictions in detail in various examples, including the quartic matrix model, topological strings on the local curve, and Hurwitz theory. In all these cases we provide extensive numerical checks which heavily support our nonperturbative analytical results. Moreover, since all these models have a critical point describing two-dimensional gravity, we also obtain in this way the large-order asymptotics of the relevant solution to the Painleve I equation, including corrections in inverse genus. From a mathematical point of view, our results predict the large-genus asymptotics of simple Hurwitz numbers and of local Gromov-Witten invariants.
