In this letter, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enhanced full-duplex MIMO two-way communication system is studied. The system sum rate is maximized through jointly optimizing the source precoders and the IRS phase shift matrix. Adopting the idea of Arimoto-Blahut algorithm, the non-convex optimization problem is decoupled into three sub-problems, which are solved alternatingly. All the sub-problems can be solved efficiently with closed-form solutions. In addition, practical IRS assumptions, e.g., discrete phase shift levels, are also considered. Numerical results verify the convergence and performance of the proposed scheme.
In this letter, we propose to employ reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for enhancing the D2D underlaying system performance. We study the joint power control, receive beamforming, and passive beamforming for RIS assisted D2D underlaying cellular communication systems, which is formulated as a sum rate maximization problem. To address this issue, we develop a block coordinate descent method where uplink power, receive beamformer and refection phase shifts are alternatively optimized. Then, we provide the closed-form solutions for both uplink power and receive beamformer. We further propose a quadratic transform based semi-definite relaxation algorithm to optimize the RIS phase shifts, where the original passive beamforming problem is translated into a separable quadratically constrained quadratic problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RIS assisted design significantly improves the sum-rate performance.
This paper investigates an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cooperative communication network, where the IRS exploits large reflecting elements to proactively steer the incident radio-frequency wave towards destination terminals (DTs). As the number of reflecting elements increases, the reflection resource allocation (RRA) will become urgently needed in this context, which is due to the non-ignorable energy consumption. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to realize the RRA besides the active-passive beamforming design, where RRA is based on the introduced modular IRS architecture. The modular IRS consists with multiple modules, each of which has multiple reflecting elements and is equipped with a smart controller, all the controllers can communicate with each other in a point-to-point fashion via fiber links. Consequently, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum SINR at DTs, subject to the module size constraint and both individual source terminal (ST) transmit power and the reflecting coefficients constraints. Whereas this problem is NP-hard due to the module size constraint, we develop an approximate solution by introducing the mixed row block $ell_{1,F}$-norm to transform it into a suitable semidefinite relaxation. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the meaningfulness of the introduced modular IRS architecture.
In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for solving the optimisation problem of the networks sum-rate in device-to-device (D2D) communications supported by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). The IRS is deployed to mitigate the interference and enhance the signal between the D2D transmitter and the associated D2D receiver. Our objective is to jointly optimise the transmit power at the D2D transmitter and the phase shift matrix at the IRS to maximise the network sum-rate. We formulate a Markov decision process and then propose the proximal policy optimisation for solving the maximisation game. Simulation results show impressive performance in terms of the achievable rate and processing time.
We investigate transmission optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna systems from the physical-layer security perspective. The design goal is to maximize the system secrecy rate subject to the source transmit power constraint and the unit modulus constraints imposed on phase shifts at the IRS. To solve this complicated non-convex problem, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm where the solutions to the transmit covariance of the source and the phase shift matrix of the IRS are achieved in closed form and semi-closed forms, respectively. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed theoretically. Simulations results validate the performance advantage of the proposed optimized design.
In this paper, we consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) that are deployed to increase the coverage and, possibly, the rank of the channel. We propose an optimization algorithm to configure the IRSs, which is aimed at maximizing the network sum-rate by exploiting only the statistical characterization of the environment, such as the distribution of the locations of the users and the distribution of the multipath channels. As a consequence, the proposed approach does not require the estimation of the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) for system optimization, thus significantly relaxing (or even avoiding) the need of frequently reconfiguring the IRSs, which constitutes one of the most critical issues in IRS-assisted systems. Numerical results confirm the validity of the proposed approach. It is shown, in particular, that IRS-assisted wireless systems that are optimized based on statistical CSI still provide large performance gains as compared to the baseline scenarios in which no IRSs are deployed.
