Quarkonium has been proposed as a sensitive probe of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) more than thirty years ago. Since then, lots of experimental efforts have been devoted to study its production in heavy-ion collisions to search for QGP and study its properties and significant progresses have been made. In this paper, an overview of recent experimental results on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions as well as in small systems are presented. Furthermore, the results on exotic particle X(3872) production in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions are also discussed.

Open heavy flavor and quarkonium are unique probes of the hot-dense medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Their production in p+p collisions also provide important test of QCD. In this paper, we review the selected results on open heavy flavor and quarkonium in p+p and heavy-ion collisions achieved at RHIC. Physics implications are also discussed.

The nuclear symmetry energy is a fundamental quantity important for studying the structure of systems as diverse as the atomic nucleus and the neutron star. Considerable efforts are being made to experimentally extract the symmetry energy and its dependence on nuclear density and temperature. In this article, we review experimental studies carried out up-to-date and their current status.

We will discuss recent results for the spin structure functions, with an emphasis on g2 . High precision g2 data allows for tests of the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule, and is needed to consistently evaluate higher twist effects.
We report the latest results of J/psi, psi(2S) and Upsilon production in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity, from the STAR experiment. We present J/psi cross section measurements in p+p collisions at 200 and 500 GeV, as well as the first measurement of the psi(2S) to J/psi ratio at 500 GeV. We also show J/psi and Upsilon production in heavy ion collisions: J/psi nuclear modification factors (R_{AA}) in Au+Au collisions at 200, 62.4 and 39 GeV and in U+U collisions at 193 GeV, Upsilon R_{AA} in d+Au, Au+Au and U+U collisions at 200, 200 and 193 GeV, respectively. The results are compared to different model calculations.

Thirty years ago, the suppression of quarkonium production in heavy-ion collisions was first proposed as an unambiguous signature for the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma. Recent results from the LHC run 2 have led to an unprecedented level of precision on this observable and, together with new data from RHIC, are providing an accurate picture of the influence of the medium created in nuclear collisions on the various charmonium (J/$psi$, $psi$(2S)) and bottomonium ($Upsilon(1S)$, $Upsilon(2S)$, $Upsilon(3S)$) states, studied via their decay into lepton pairs. In this contribution, I will review the new results presented at Quark Matter 2017, emphasizing their relation with previous experimental observations and comparing them, where possible, with theoretical calculations.
