Conventional speech enhancement technique such as beamforming has known benefits for far-field speech recognition. Our own work in frequency-domain multi-channel acoustic modeling has shown additional improvements by training a spatial filtering layer jointly within an acoustic model. In this paper, we further develop this idea and use frequency aligned network for robust multi-channel automatic speech recognition (ASR). Unlike an affine layer in the frequency domain, the proposed frequency aligned component prevents one frequency bin influencing other frequency bins. We show that this modification not only reduces the number of parameters in the model but also significantly and improves the ASR performance. We investigate effects of frequency aligned network through ASR experiments on the real-world far-field data where users are interacting with an ASR system in uncontrolled acoustic environments. We show that our multi-channel acoustic model with a frequency aligned network shows up to 18% relative reduction in word error rate.

We investigate the use of generative adversarial networks (GANs) in speech dereverberation for robust speech recognition. GANs have been recently studied for speech enhancement to remove additive noises, but there still lacks of a work to examine their ability in speech dereverberation and the advantages of using GANs have not been fully established. In this paper, we provide deep investigations in the use of GAN-based dereverberation front-end in ASR. First, we study the effectiveness of different dereverberation networks (the generator in GAN) and find that LSTM leads a significant improvement as compared with feed-forward DNN and CNN in our dataset. Second, further adding residual connections in the deep LSTMs can boost the performance as well. Finally, we find that, for the success of GAN, it is important to update the generator and the discriminator using the same mini-batch data during training. Moreover, using reverberant spectrogram as a condition to discriminator, as suggested in previous studies, may degrade the performance. In summary, our GAN-based dereverberation front-end achieves 14%-19% relative CER reduction as compared to the baseline DNN dereverberation network when tested on a strong multi-condition training acoustic model.
End-to-end multi-talker speech recognition is an emerging research trend in the speech community due to its vast potential in applications such as conversation and meeting transcriptions. To the best of our knowledge, all existing research works are constrained in the offline scenario. In this work, we propose the Streaming Unmixing and Recognition Transducer (SURT) for end-to-end multi-talker speech recognition. Our model employs the Recurrent Neural Network Transducer (RNN-T) as the backbone that can meet various latency constraints. We study two different model architectures that are based on a speaker-differentiator encoder and a mask encoder respectively. To train this model, we investigate the widely used Permutation Invariant Training (PIT) approach and the Heuristic Error Assignment Training (HEAT) approach. Based on experiments on the publicly available LibriSpeechMix dataset, we show that HEAT can achieve better accuracy compared with PIT, and the SURT model with 150 milliseconds algorithmic latency constraint compares favorably with the offline sequence-to-sequence based baseline model in terms of accuracy.
The front-end module in multi-channel automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems mainly use microphone array techniques to produce enhanced signals in noisy conditions with reverberation and echos. Recently, neural network (NN) based front-end has shown promising improvement over the conventional signal processing methods. In this paper, we propose to adopt the architecture of deep complex Unet (DCUnet) - a powerful complex-valued Unet-structured speech enhancement model - as the front-end of the multi-channel acoustic model, and integrate them in a multi-task learning (MTL) framework along with cascaded framework for comparison. Meanwhile, we investigate the proposed methods with several training strategies to improve the recognition accuracy on the 1000-hours real-world XiaoMi smart speaker data with echos. Experiments show that our proposed DCUnet-MTL method brings about 12.2% relative character error rate (CER) reduction compared with the traditional approach with array processing plus single-channel acoustic model. It also achieves superior performance than the recently proposed neural beamforming method.
The majority of existing speech emotion recognition models are trained and evaluated on a single corpus and a single language setting. These systems do not perform as well when applied in a cross-corpus and cross-language scenario. This paper presents results for speech emotion recognition for 4 languages in both single corpus and cross corpus setting. Additionally, since multi-task learning (MTL) with gender, naturalness and arousal as auxiliary tasks has shown to enhance the generalisation capabilities of the emotion models, this paper introduces language ID as another auxiliary task in MTL framework to explore the role of spoken language on emotion recognition which has not been studied yet.
Recurrent transducer models have emerged as a promising solution for speech recognition on the current and next generation smart devices. The transducer models provide competitive accuracy within a reasonable memory footprint alleviating the memory capacity constraints in these devices. However, these models access parameters from off-chip memory for every input time step which adversely effects device battery life and limits their usability on low-power devices. We address transducer models memory access concerns by optimizing their model architecture and designing novel recurrent cell designs. We demonstrate that i) models energy cost is dominated by accessing model weights from off-chip memory, ii) transducer model architecture is pivotal in determining the number of accesses to off-chip memory and just model size is not a good proxy, iii) our transducer model optimizations and novel recurrent cell reduces off-chip memory accesses by 4.5x and model size by 2x with minimal accuracy impact.
