A mobility mechanism for robots to be used in tight spaces shared with people requires it to have a small footprint, to move omnidirectionally, as well as to be highly maneuverable. However, currently there exist few such mobility mechanisms that satisfy all these conditions well. Here we introduce Omnidirectional Balancing Unicycle Robot (OmBURo), a novel unicycle robot with active omnidirectional wheel. The effect is that the unicycle robot can drive in both longitudinal and lateral directions simultaneously. Thus, it can dynamically balance itself based on the principle of dual-axis wheeled inverted pendulum. This letter discloses the early development of this novel unicycle robot involving the overall design, modeling, and control, as well as presents some preliminary results including station keeping and path following. With its very compact structure and agile mobility, it might be the ideal locomotion mechanism for robots to be used in human environments in the future.

In this paper, we present an active visual SLAM approach for omnidirectional robots. The goal is to generate control commands that allow such a robot to simultaneously localize itself and map an unknown environment while maximizing the amount of information gained and consume as low energy as possible. Leveraging the robots independent translation and rotation control, we introduce a multi-layered approach for active V-SLAM. The top layer decides on informative goal locations and generates highly informative paths to them. The second and third layers actively re-plan and execute the path, exploiting the continuously updated map and local features information. Moreover, we introduce two utility formulations to account for the obstacle presence in the field of view and the robots location. Through rigorous simulations, real robot experiments and comparisons with the state-of-the-art methods, we demonstrate that our approach achieves similar coverage results with lesser overall map entropy. This is obtained while keeping the traversed distance up to 39% shorter than the other methods and without increasing the wheels total rotation amount. Code and implementation details are provided as opensource.
Chinese calligraphy is a unique art form with great artistic value but difficult to master. In this paper, we formulate the calligraphy writing problem as a trajectory optimization problem, and propose an improved virtual brush model for simulating the real writing process. Our approach is inspired by pseudospectral optimal control in that we parameterize the actuator trajectory for each stroke as a Chebyshev polynomial. The proposed dynamic virtual brush model plays a key role in formulating the objective function to be optimized. Our approach shows excellent performance in drawing aesthetically pleasing characters, and does so much more efficiently than previous work, opening up the possibility to achieve real-time closed-loop control.

In this work, we present a multimodal system for active robot-object interaction using laser-based SLAM, RGBD images, and contact sensors. In the object manipulation task, the robot adjusts its initial pose with respect to obstacles and target objects through RGBD data so it can perform object grasping in different configuration spaces while avoiding collisions, and updates the information related to the last steps of the manipulation process using the contact sensors in its hand. We perform a series of experiment to evaluate the performance of the proposed system following the the RoboCup2018 international competition regulations. We compare our approach with a number of baselines, namely a no-feedback method and visual-only and tactile-only feedback methods, where our proposed visual-and-tactile feedback method performs best.
Voronoi coverage control is a particular problem of importance in the area of multi-robot systems, which considers a network of multiple autonomous robots, tasked with optimally covering a large area. This is a common task for fleets of fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which are described in this work by a unicycle model with constant forward-speed constraints. We develop event-based control/communication algorithms to relax the resource requirements on wireless communication and control actuators, an important feature for battery-driven or otherwise energy-constrained systems. To overcome the drawback that the event-triggered algorithm requires continuous measurement of system states, we propose a self-triggered algorithm to estimate the next triggering time. Hardware experiments illustrate the theoretical results.
