Here we report on the formation of two and three magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $alpha$-NaMnO$_2$, where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order $n>2$ composite magnons exist, and, specifically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition of NaMnO$_2$. We corroborate our findings with exact numerical simulations of a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with easy-axis anisotropy using matrix-product state techniques, finding a good quantitative agreement with the experiment. These results establish $alpha$-NaMnO$_2$ as a unique platform for exploring the dynamics of composite magnon states inherent to a classical antiferromagnetic spin chain with Ising-like single ion anisotropy.

Spin-waves e.g. magnons are the conventional elementary excitations of ordered magnets. However, other possibilities exist. For instance, magnon bound-states can arise due to attractive magnon-magnon interactions and drastically impact the static and dynamic properties of materials. Here, we demonstrate a zoo of distinct multi-magnon quasiparticles in the frustrated spin-1 triangular antiferromagnet FeI$_2$ using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. The energy-magnetic field excitation spectrum contains signatures of one-, two-, four- and six-magnon bound-states, which we analyze using an exact diagonalization approach for a dilute gas of interacting magnons. The two-magnon single-ion bound states occur due to strong anisotropy and the preponderance of even higher order excitations arises from the tendency of the single-ion bound states to themselves form bound states due to their very flat dispersion. This menagerie of tunable interacting quasiparticles provides a unique platform in a condensed matter setting that is reminiscent of the few-body quantum phenomena central to cold-atom, nuclear, and particle physics experiments.

We report $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under transverse field along the [010] direction. The scaling behavior of the spin-lattice relaxation rate above the N{e}el temperatures unveils a 1D quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c^{1D}approx 4.7$ T, which is masked by the 3D magnetic order. With the aid of accurate analytical analysis and numerical calculations, we show that the zone center INS spectrum at $H_c^{1D}$ is precisely described by the pattern of the 1D quantum Ising model in a magnetic field, a class of universality described in terms of the exceptional $E_8$ Lie algebra. These excitations keep to be non-diffusive over a certain field range when the system is away from the 1D QCP. Our results provide an unambiguous experimental realization of the massive $E_8$ phase in the compound, and open new experimental route for exploring the dynamics of quantum integrable systems as well as physics beyond integrability.
Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet bacovo in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Neel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We especially observe the rise of mainly longitudinal excitations, a hallmark of the unconventional low-field regime in Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet chains.
Magnetization measurements on single-crystal cubic SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ with an applied magnetic field of along three inequivalent high symmetry directions $[100]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ reveal weak magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the magnetic susceptibility to the result from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation on the Heisenberg spin-chain model, where the chain is formed via the dominant third-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction $J_3$, yield the intra-chain interaction $(J_3/k_B)$ between 50.12(7) K for the applied field along $[110]$ and 52.5(2) K along $[100]$ with about the same $g$-factor of 2.2. Single-crystal neutron diffraction unveils the transition to the magnetic ordered state as evidenced by the onset of the magnetic Bragg intensity at $T_textrm{N1}=5.25(9)$ K with no anomaly of the second transition at $T_textrm{N2}$ reported previously. Based on irreducible representation theory and magnetic space group analysis of powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, the magnetic structure in the Shubnikov space group $P4_132$, where the Cu$^{2+}$~$S=1/2$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the direction perpendicular to the spin chain, is proposed. The measured ordered moment of $0.52(6)~mu_B$, which represents 48% reduction from the expected value of $1~mu_B$, suggests the remaining influence of frustration resulting from the $J_1$ and $J_2$ bonds.
Quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders and chains, with the 3$d$ iron electronic density $n = 6$, are attracting considerable attention. Recently, a new iron chain system Ba$_2$FeS$_3$, also with $n = 6$, was prepared under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Here, the magnetic and electronic phase diagrams are theoretically studied for this quasi-one-dimensional compound. Based on first-principles calculations, a strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic band behavior near the Fermi level was observed. In addition, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this chain was constructed. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we studied the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered $uparrow$-$downarrow$-$uparrow$-$downarrow$ AFM region was unveiled in the chain direction, consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, at intermediate Hubbard $U$ coupling strengths, this system was found to display an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) with one localized orbital and two itinerant metallic orbitals. At very large $U/W$ ($W$ = bandwidth), the system displays Mott insulator characteristics, with two orbitals half-filled and one doubly occupied. Our results for high pressure Ba$_2$FeS$_3$ provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this one-dimensional iron chalcogenide chain material.
