We consider a variant of Gamows liquid drop model with an anisotropic surface energy. Under suitable regularity and ellipticity assumptions on the surface tension, Wulff shapes are minimizers in this problem if and only if the surface energy is isotropic. We show that for smooth anisotropies, in the small nonlocality regime, minimizers converge to the Wulff shape in $C^1$-norm and quantify the rate of convergence. We also obtain a quantitative extension of the energy of any minimizer around the energy of a Wulff shape yielding a geometric stability result. For certain crystalline surface tensions we can determine the global minimizer and obtain its exact energy expansion in terms of the nonlocality parameter.

We study energy minimization of a continuum Landau-de Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional axisymmetric domains and in a restricted class of $mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant (i.e., axially symmetric) configurations. We assume smooth and nonvanishing $mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant (e.g. homeotropic) Dirichlet boundary conditions and a physically relevant norm constraint (Lyuksyutov constraint) in the interior. Relying on results in cite{DMP1} in the nonsymmetric setting, we prove partial regularity of minimizers away from a possible finite set of interior singularities lying on the symmetry axis. For a suitable class of domains and boundary data we show that for smooth minimizers (torus solutions) the level sets of the signed biaxiality are generically finite union of tori of revolution. Concerning nonsmooth minimizers (split solutions), we characterize their asymptotic behavior around any singular point in terms of explicit $mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant harmonic maps into $mathbb{S}^4$, whence the generic level sets of the signed biaxiality contains invariant topological spheres. Finally, in the model case of a nematic droplet, we provide existence of torus solutions, at least when the boundary data are suitable uniaxial deformations of the radial anchoring, and existence of split solutions for boundary data which are suitable linearly full harmonic spheres.

We prove that a continuous potential $q$ can be constructively determined from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the perturbed biharmonic operator $Delta_g^2+q$ on a conformally transversally anisotropic Riemannian manifold of dimension $ge 3$ with boundary, assuming that the geodesic ray transform on the transversal manifold is constructively invertible. This is a constructive counterpart of the uniqueness result of [51]. In particular, our result is applicable and new in the case of smooth bounded domains in the $3$-dimensional Euclidean space as well as in the case of $3$-dimensional admissible manifolds.
We show that a continuous potential $q$ can be constructively determined from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Schrodinger operator $-Delta_g+q$ on a conformally transversally anisotropic manifold of dimension $geq 3$, provided that the geodesic ray transform on the transversal manifold is constructively invertible. This is a constructive counterpart of the uniqueness result of Dos Santos Ferreira-Kurylev-Lassas-Salo. A crucial role in our reconstruction procedure is played by a constructive determination of the boundary traces of suitable complex geometric optics solutions based on Gaussian beams quasimodes concentrated along non-tangential geodesics on the transversal manifold, which enjoy uniqueness properties. This is achieved by applying the simplified version of the approach of Nachman-Street to our setting. We also identify the main space introduced by Nachman-Street with a standard Sobolev space on the boundary of the manifold. Another ingredient in the proof of our result is a reconstruction formula for the boundary trace of a continuous potential from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.
The Dirac operator, acting in three dimensions, is considered. Assuming that a large mass $m>0$ lies outside a smooth and bounded open set $OmegasubsetR^3$, it is proved that its spectrum is approximated by the one of the Dirac operator on $Omega$ with the MIT bag boundary condition. The approximation, which is developed up to and error of order $o(1/sqrt m)$, is carried out by introducing tubular coordinates in a neighborhood of $partialOmega$ and analyzing the corresponding one dimensional optimization problems in the normal direction.

In this paper we prove the convergence of solutions to discrete models for binary waveguide arrays toward those of their formal continuum limit, for which we also show the existence of localized standing waves. This work rigorously justifies formal arguments and numerical simulations present in the Physics literature.
