Superconductor-ferromagnetic heterostructures have been suggested as one of the most promising alternatives of realizing odd-frequency superconductivity. In this work we consider the limit of shrinking the ferromagnetic region to the limit of a single impurity embedded in a conventional superconductor, which gives raise to localized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states with energies inside the superconducting gap. We demonstrate that all the sufficient ingredients for generating odd-frequency pairing are present at the vicinity of these impurities. We investigate the appearance of all possible pair amplitudes in accordance with the Berezinskii $SP^{ast}OT^{ast} = -1$ rule, being the symmetry under the exchange of spin, spatial, orbital (in our case $O=+1$) and time index, respectively. We study the spatial and frequency dependence of of the possible pairing amplitudes, analyzing their evolution with impurity strength and identifying a reciprocity between different symmetries related through impurity scattering. We show that the odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing amplitude dominates at the critical impurity strength, where the YSR states merge at the middle of the gap, while the even components cancel out close to the impurity. We also show that the spin-polarized local density of states exhibits the same spatial and frequency behavior as the odd-$omega$ spin-triplet component at the critical impurity strength.

It is shown that the application of sufficiently strong magnetic field to the odd-frequency paired Pair Density Wave state described in Phys. Rev. B 94, 165114 (2016) leads to formation of a low temperature metallic state with zero Hall response. Applications of these ideas to the recent experiments on stripe-ordered La_{1.875}Ba_{0.125}CuO_4 are discussed.
Unconventional superconductors are of high interest due to their rich physics, a topical example being topological edge-states associated with $p$-wave superconductivity. A practical obstacle in studying such systems is the very low critical temperature $T_text{c}$ that is required to realize a $p$-wave superconducting phase in a material. We predict that the $T_text{c}$ of an intrinsic $p$-wave superconductor can be significantly enhanced by coupling it via an atomically thin ferromagnetic layer (F) to a conventional $s$-wave or a $d$-wave superconductor with a higher critical temperature. We show that this $T_text{c}$-boost is tunable via the direction of the magnetization in F. Moreover, we show that the enhancement in $T_text{c}$ can also be achieved using the Zeeman-effect of an external magnetic field. Our findings provide a way to increase $T_text{c}$ in $p$-wave superconductors in a controllable way and make the exotic physics associated with such materials more easily accessible experimentally.
At an interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a conventional superconductor (SC), superconductivity has been predicted to change dramatically and exhibit novel correlations. In particular, the induced superconductivity by an $s$-wave SC in a TI can develop an order parameter with a $p$-wave component. Here we present experimental evidence for an unexpected proximity-induced novel superconducting state in a thin layer of the prototypical TI, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, proximity coupled to Nb. From depth-resolved magnetic field measurements below the superconducting transition temperature of Nb, we observe a local enhancement of the magnetic field in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ that exceeds the externally applied field, thus supporting the existence of an intrinsic paramagnetic Meissner effect arising from an odd-frequency superconducting state. Our experimental results are complemented by theoretical calculations supporting the appearance of such a component at the interface which extends into the TI. This state is topologically distinct from the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state it originates from. To the best of our knowledge, these findings present a first observation of bulk odd-frequency superconductivity in a TI. We thus reaffirm the potential of the TI-SC interface as a versatile platform to produce novel superconducting states.
We formulate a general framework for addressing both odd- and even-frequency superconductivity in Dirac semimetals and demonstrate that the odd-frequency or the Berezinskii pairing can naturally appear in these materials because of the chirality degree of freedom. We show that repulsive frequency-dependent interactions favor the Berezinskii pairing while an attractive electron-electron interaction allows for the BCS pairing. In the case of compensated Dirac and Weyl semimetals, both the conventional BCS and odd-frequency Berezinskii pairings require critical coupling. Since these pairings could originate from physically different mechanisms, our findings pave the way for controlling the realization of the Berezinskii superconductivity in topological semimetals. We also present the density of states with several cusp-like features that can serve as an experimentally verifiable signature of the odd-frequency gap.
Superconductivity and magnetic order strongly compete in many conventional superconductors, at least partly because both tend to gap the Fermi surface. In magnetically-ordered conventional superconductors, the competition between these cooperative phenomena leads to anomalies at magnetic and superconducting phase boundaries. Here we reveal that in Pr2Pt3Ge5 superconducting and multiple magnetic order are intertwined within the same HT-phase space, but remain completely decoupled. Our thermal conductivity measurements provide evidence for normal electrons in the superconducting phase from which magnetic order emerges with negligible coupling to electron bands that contribute to superconductivity.
