Long-lived coherences, emerging under periodic pulse driving in the disordered ensembles of strongly interacting spins, offer immense advantages for future quantum technologies, but the physical origin and the key properties of this phenomenon remain poorly understood. We theoretically investigate this effect in ensembles of different dimensionality, and predict existence of the long-lived coherences in two-dimensional and infinite-dimensional (where every spin is coupled to all others) systems, which are of particular importance for quantum sensing and quantum information processing. We explore the transition from two to infinite dimensions, and show that the long-time coherence dynamics in all dimensionalities is qualitatively similar, although the short-time behavior is drastically different, exhibiting dimensionality-dependent singularity. Our study establishes the common physical origin of the long-lived coherences in different dimensionalities, and suggests that this effect is a generic feature of the strongly coupled spin systems with positional disorder. Our results lay out foundation for utilizing the long-lived coherences in a range of application, from quantum sensing with two-dimensional spin ensembles, to quantum information processing with the infinitely-dimensional spin systems in the cavity-QED settings.

Understanding and protecting the coherence of individual quantum systems is a central challenge in quantum science and technology. Over the last decades, a rich variety of methods to extend coherence have been developed. A complementary approach is to look for naturally occurring systems that are inherently protected against decoherence. Here, we show that pairs of identical nuclear spins in solids form intrinsically long-lived quantum systems. We study three carbon-13 pairs in diamond and realize high-fidelity measurements of their quantum states using a single NV center in their vicinity. We then reveal that the spin pairs are robust to external perturbations due to a unique combination of three phenomena: a clock transition, a decoherence-free subspace, and a variant on motional narrowing. The resulting inhomogeneous dephasing time is $T_2^* = 1.9(3)$ minutes, the longest reported for individually controlled qubits. Finally, we develop complete control and realize an entangled state between two spin-pair qubits through projective parity measurements. These long-lived qubits are abundantly present in diamond and other solids, and provide new opportunities for quantum sensing, quantum information processing, and quantum networks.
We study the quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems, especially the infinite dimensional bosonic systems in Fock space. We show that given the energy constraints, the relative entropy of coherence serves as a well-defined quantification of coherence in infinite dimensional systems. Via using the relative entropy of coherence, we also generalize the problem to multi-mode Fock space and special examples are considered. It is shown that with a finite average particle number, increasing the number of modes of light can enhance the relative entropy of coherence. With the mean energy constraint, our results can also be extended to other infinite-dimensional systems.
Confining particles in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers has opened up new prospects to scale up the distance and time over which particles can be made to interact with light. However, maintaining long-lived quantum spin coherence and/or transporting it over macroscopic distances in a waveguide remain challenging. Here, we demonstrate coherent guiding of ground-state superpositions of 85Rb atoms over a centimeter range and hundreds of milliseconds inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The decoherence is mainly due to dephasing from residual differential light shift (DLS) from the optical trap and the inhomogeneity of ambient magnetic field. Our experiment establishes an important step towards a versatile platform that can lead to applications in quantum information networks and matter wave circuit for quantum sensing.

We investigate the performance of inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles as quantum memories under continuous dynamical decoupling. The role of the continuous driving field is two-fold: first, it decouples individual spins from magnetic noise; second and more important, it suppresses and reshapes the spectral inhomogeneity of spin ensembles. We show that a continuous driving field, which itself may also be inhomogeneous over the ensemble, can enhance the decay of the tails of the inhomogeneous broadening distribution considerably. This fact enables a spin ensemble based quantum memory to exploit the effect of cavity protection and achieve a much longer storage time. In particular, for a spin ensemble with a Lorentzian spectral distribution, our calculations demonstrate that continuous dynamical decoupling has the potential to improve its storage time by orders of magnitude for the state-of-art experimental parameters.
In this contribution, we investigated the spin coherence of high-mobility dense two-dimensional electron gases confined in multilayer systems. The dynamics of optically-induced spin polarization was experimentally studied employing the time-resolved Kerr rotation and resonant spin amplification techniques. For both the double and triple quantum wells doped beyond the metal-insulator transition, where the spin coherence is greatly suppressed, we found remarkably long spin lifetimes limited by the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism and spin hopping process between the donor sites as well as the spread of ensemble g-factor. The double quantum well structure yields a spin lifetime of 6.25 ns at T = 5 K while the triple quantum well shows a spin lifetime exceeding 25 ns at T = 8 K.
