With the increasing complexity of modern power systems, conventional dynamic load modeling with ZIP and induction motors (ZIP + IM) is no longer adequate to address the current load characteristic transitions. In recent years, the WECC composite load model (WECC CLM) has shown to effectively capture the dynamic load responses over traditional load models in various stability studies and contingency analyses. However, a detailed WECC CLM model typically has a high degree of complexity, with over one hundred parameters, and no systematic approach to identifying and calibrating these parameters. Enabled by the wide deployment of PMUs and advanced deep learning algorithms, proposed here is a double deep Q-learning network (DDQN)-based, two-stage load modeling framework for the WECC CLM. This two-stage method decomposes the complicated WECC CLM for more efficient identification and does not require explicit model details. In the first stage, the DDQN agent determines an accurate load composition. In the second stage, the parameters of the WECC CLM are selected from a group of Monte-Carlo simulations. The set of selected load parameters is expected to best approximate the true transient responses. The proposed framework is verified using an IEEE 39-bus test system on commercial simulation platforms.
Microgrid (MG) energy management is an important part of MG operation. Various entities are generally involved in the energy management of an MG, e.g., energy storage system (ESS), renewable energy resources (RER) and the load of users, and it is crucial to coordinate these entities. Considering the significant potential of machine learning techniques, this paper proposes a correlated deep Q-learning (CDQN) based technique for the MG energy management. Each electrical entity is modeled as an agent which has a neural network to predict its own Q-values, after which the correlated Q-equilibrium is used to coordinate the operation among agents. In this paper, the Long Short Term Memory networks (LSTM) based deep Q-learning algorithm is introduced and the correlated equilibrium is proposed to coordinate agents. The simulation result shows 40.9% and 9.62% higher profit for ESS agent and photovoltaic (PV) agent, respectively.
Q learning is widely used to simulate the behaviors of generation companies (GenCos) in an electricity market. However, existing Q learning method usually requires numerous iterations to converge, which is time-consuming and inefficient in practice. To enhance the calculation efficiency, a novel Q learning algorithm improved by dichotomy is proposed in this paper. This method modifies the update process of the Q table by dichotomizing the state space and the action space step by step. Simulation results in a repeated Cournot game show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
The Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) composite load model is a newly developed load model that has drawn great interest from the industry. To analyze its dynamic characteristics with both mathematical and engineering rigor, a detailed mathematical model is needed. Although WECC composite load model is available in commercial software as a module and its detailed block diagrams can be found in several public reports, there is no complete mathematical representation of the full model in literature. This paper addresses a challenging problem of deriving detailed mathematical representation of WECC composite load model from its block diagrams. In particular, for the first time, we have derived the mathematical representation of the new DER_A model. The developed mathematical model is verified using both Matlab and PSS/E to show its effectiveness in representing WECC composite load model. The derived mathematical representation serves as an important foundation for parameter identification, order reduction and other dynamic analysis.
Vehicle tracking has become one of the key applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the fields of rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, etc. However, the increased tracking accuracy requires more energy consumption. In this letter, a decentralized vehicle tracking strategy is conceived for improving both tracking accuracy and energy saving, which is based on adjusting the intersection area between the fixed sensing area and the dynamic activation area. Then, two deep reinforcement learning (DRL) aided solutions are proposed relying on the dynamic selection of the activation area radius. Finally, simulation results show the superiority of our DRL aided design.
Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising technology to support mission-critical vehicular applications, such as intelligent path planning and safety applications. In this paper, a collaborative edge computing framework is developed to reduce the computing service latency and improve service reliability for vehicular networks. First, a task partition and scheduling algorithm (TPSA) is proposed to decide the workload allocation and schedule the execution order of the tasks offloaded to the edge servers given a computation offloading strategy. Second, an artificial intelligence (AI) based collaborative computing approach is developed to determine the task offloading, computing, and result delivery policy for vehicles. Specifically, the offloading and computing problem is formulated as a Markov decision process. A deep reinforcement learning technique, i.e., deep deterministic policy gradient, is adopted to find the optimal solution in a complex urban transportation network. By our approach, the service cost, which includes computing service latency and service failure penalty, can be minimized via the optimal workload assignment and server selection in collaborative computing. Simulation results show that the proposed AI-based collaborative computing approach can adapt to a highly dynamic environment with outstanding performance.
