The Atomic Cluster Expansion (Drautz, Phys. Rev. B 99, 2019) provides a framework to systematically derive polynomial basis functions for approximating isometry and permutation invariant functions, particularly with an eye to modelling properties of atomistic systems. Our presentation extends the derivation by proposing a precomputation algorithm that yields immediate guarantees that a complete basis is obtained. We provide a fast recursive algorithm for efficient evaluation and illustrate its performance in numerical tests. Finally, we discuss generalisations and open challenges, particularly from a numerical stability perspective, around basis optimisation and parameter estimation, paving the way towards a comprehensive analysis of the convergence to a high-fidelity reference model.

In this paper, we develop a new neural network family based on power series expansion, which is proved to achieve a better approximation accuracy in comparison with existing neural networks. This new set of neural networks embeds the power series expansion (PSE) into the neural network structure. Then it can improve the representation ability while preserving comparable computational cost by increasing the degree of PSE instead of increasing the depth or width. Both theoretical approximation and numerical results show the advantages of this new neural network.

We aim at the development and analysis of the numerical schemes for approximately solving the backward diffusion-wave problem, which involves a fractional derivative in time with order $alphain(1,2)$. From terminal observations at two time levels, i.e., $u(T_1)$ and $u(T_2)$, we simultaneously recover two initial data $u(0)$ and $u_t(0)$ and hence the solution $u(t)$ for all $t > 0$. First of all, existence, uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of the backward diffusion-wave problem were established under some conditions about $T_1$ and $T_2$. Moreover, for noisy data, we propose a quasi-boundary value scheme to regularize the mildly ill-posed problem, and show the convergence of the regularized solution. Next, to numerically solve the regularized problem, a fully discrete scheme is proposed by applying finite element method in space and convolution quadrature in time. We establish error bounds of the discrete solution in both cases of smooth and nonsmooth data. The error estimate is very useful in practice since it indicates the way to choose discretization parameters and regularization parameter, according to the noise level. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
In this article, we combine a lattice sequence from Quasi-Monte Carlo rules with the philosophy of the Fourier-cosine method to design an approximation scheme for expectation computation. We study the error of this scheme and compare this scheme with our previous work on wavelets. Also, some numerical experiments are performed.
We show stability of the $L^2$-projection onto Lagrange finite element spaces with respect to (weighted) $L^p$ and $W^{1,p}$-norms for any polynomial degree and for any space dimension under suitable conditions on the mesh grading. This includes $W^{1,2}$-stability in two space dimensions for any polynomial degree and meshes generated by newest vertex bisection. Under realistic but conjectured assumptions on the mesh grading in three dimensions we show $W^{1,2}$-stability for all polynomial degrees. We also propose a modified bisection strategy that leads to better $W^{1,p}$-stability. Moreover, we investigate the stability of the $L^2$-projection onto Crouzeix-Raviart elements.
In this paper we prove a new abstract stability result for perturbed saddle-point problems based on a norm fitting technique. We derive the stability condition according to Babuv{s}kas theory from a small inf-sup condition, similar to the famous Ladyzhenskaya-Babuv{s}ka-Brezzi (LBB) condition, and the other standard assumptions in Brezzis theory, in a combined abstract norm. The construction suggests to form the latter from individual {it fitted} norms that are composed from proper seminorms. This abstract framework not only allows for simpler (shorter) proofs of many stability results but also guides the design of parameter-robust norm-equivalent preconditioners. These benefits are demonstrated on mixed variational formulations of generalized Poisson, Stokes, vector Laplace and Biots equations.
